  • Samples of banana were dried in a two-stage heat pump dryer capable of producing stepwise control of the inlet drying air temperature while keeping absolute humidity constant. Two stepwise air temperature profiles were tested. The incremental temperature step change in temperature of the drying air about the mean air temperature of 30 $^{\circ}C$ was 5 $^{\circ}C$. The total drying time for each temperature-time profile was about 300 minutes. The drying kinetics and color change of the products dried under these stepwise variation of the inlet air temperature were measured and compared with constant air temperature drying. The stepwise air temperature variation was found to yield better quality product in terms of color of the dried product. Further, it was found that by employing a step-down temperature profile, it was possible to reduce the drying time to reach the desired moisture content.

  • As decreasing size of chips, the need of wafer level packaging is increased in semi-conductor and display industries. Temperature uniformity is a crucial factor in vacuum soldering process to guarantee quality of bonding between chips and wafer. In this paper, a stepwise iterative algorithm has been suggested to obtain output profile of each heat source. Since this algorithm is based on open-loop stepwise iterative experimental technique, it is easier to implement and cost effective than real time feedback controls. Along with some experiments, it was shown that the suggested algorithm can remarkably improve temperature uniformity of wafer during whole heating process compared with the ordinary manual trial-and error method.

  • The parasitic resistance is studied to silicon/metal contact junction for improving device performance and to lower contact/serial resistance silicide in natural sequence. In this paper constructs the stepwise Ni silicide process for parasitic resistance reduction for silicon/metal contact junction. We have investigated multi-step Ni silicide on SiGe substrate with stepwise annealing method as an alternative to compose more thermally reliable Ni silicide layer. Stepwise annealing for silicide formation is exposed to heating environment with $5^{\circ}C/sec$ for 10 seconds and a dwelling for both 10 and 30 seconds, and ramping-up and the dwelling was repeated until the final annealing temperature of $700\;^{\circ}C$ is achieved. Finally a direct comparison for single step and stepwise annealing process is obtained for 20 nm nickel silicide through stepwise annealing is $5.64\;{\Omega}/square$ at $600\;^{\circ}C$, and it is 42 % lower than that of as nickel sputtered. The proposed stepwise annealing for Ni silicidation can provide the least amount of NiSi at the interface of nickel silicide and silicon, and it provides lower resistance, higher thermal-stability, and superior morphology than other thermal treatment.

  • This study was performed to determine the correlationship between temperature and overall removals of BOD, SS and to demonstrate the effect of temperature on treatment performance. These data for a period from February 1, 1977 to January 31, 1980 were obtained from the Cheong-Gye Cheon Sewage Treatment plant. The results of correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis were as follows. 1) Secondary effluent BOD and SS showed negative correlationship with water temperature, with correlation coefficient of -0.1710, and -0.1654 respectively. 2) Correlation coefficient of BOD, SS removal rate and water temperature were 0.1823 and 0.0429 respectively. 3) Regresion equation for estimate of BOD removal rate was as follows $\widehat{Y}_1$ (BOD removal rate)=63.9994+0.5442X(water temperature). And BOD removal rate showed non significant change according to the water temperature. 4) Regression equation for estimate of SS removal rate was as follows $\widehat{Y}_2$ (SS removal rate)=61.6881+0.1514X(Water temperature). And SS removal rate showed non significant change according to the water temperature. 5) According to the Stepwise Multiple Regression analysis, water temperature ranked second order in the BOD removal rate estimation and the equation was as follows $\widehat{Y}_1$ (BOD removal rate)=69.7398+0.2665 $X_1$ (Primary effluent BOD)+0.3562 $X_2$ (Water temperature)-0.0122 $X_3(Flow)+4413.271X_4$ (Organic Loading).

  • In this work we have studied the multilayer stepwise adsorption of gases on solid adsorbents based on the previously developed theory. It is shown that stepwise adsorption isotherms emerge from our theory if an ad hoc adsorption regarding the degree of occupation for each successive layer is abolished and the effect of lateral intermolecular interactions among adsorbate molecules is included. In addition to these the effect of vertical interactions has also been taken into consideration. It seems that the vertical interaction plays a role in deciding the shape and the position of steps in resulting isotherms. It is evident from this research that it is the lateral interaction that is responsible for stepwise adsorption as long as the adsorbent surface is uniform and temperature is sufficiently low.

  • Multi-stepwise Thermal Prestressing Method(TPSM) is a newly proposed prestressing method, which is combined the external prestressing method and the external bonding method. Multi-stepwise thermal prestressing force is induced by cooling process of cover-plate in the multi-stepwise temperature distribution after the cover-plate being bolted to the girder. In this study, the heating capacity test of the developed heating system for applying the multi-stepwise TPSM effectively and multi-stepwise TPSM inducing test of H-beam is performed. Also, a field test of the rhamen type temporary bridge is carried out to evaluate the effect and application of the multi-stepwise TPSM. Truck load was loaded and compared with the structure analysis results.

  • The transient power characteristics of a PEM fuel cell stack was experimentally studied using a commercial 1.2kW PEM fuel cell ($Nexa^{TM}$ Power Module, Ballard Power System Inc.). The conditions in PEM fuel cell stack such as temperature and water content change rather slowly because of their large heat capacity and long channel length, which results in long transient time to converge to a steady state. The steady characteristics of the PEM fuel cell module was determined first, followed by the measurement of its transient characteristics upon stepwise and continuous load current changes. During the stepwise current change from 5A to 25A, the output voltage initially decreased below the steady voltage and then increased gradually. Similar behavior was also observed for the stepwise current change from 25A to 5A. This transient behavior is explained with reference to the evolution of the temperature and water content of the PEM fuel cell stack.

  • Observed climate data are processed under the assumption that their time series are stationary, as in multi-step temperature and precipitation prediction, which usually leads to low prediction accuracy. If a climate system model is based on a single prediction model, the prediction results contain significant uncertainty. In order to overcome this drawback, this study uses a method that integrates ensemble prediction and a stepwise regression model based on a mean-valued generation function. In addition, it utilizes empirical mode decomposition (EMD), which is a new method of handling time series. First, a non-stationary time series is decomposed into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), which are stationary and multi-scale. Then, a different prediction model is constructed for each component of the IMF using numerical ensemble prediction combined with stepwise regression analysis. Finally, the results are fit to a linear regression model, and a short-term climate prediction system is established using the Visual Studio development platform. The model is validated using temperature data from February 1957 to 2005 from 88 weather stations in Guangxi, China. The results show that compared to single-model prediction methods, the EMD and ensemble prediction model is more effective for forecasting climate change and abrupt climate shifts when using historical data for multi-step prediction.

  • Supercooling storage refers to lowering the product temperature below its freezing point without phase transition and has the potential to extend shelf life. Nevertheless, supercooled objects are in a thermodynamically unstable state, and nucleation can occur spontaneously. To achieve supercooling storage, slow cooling and insulation are essential. Hence, a stepwise algorithm for the supercooling storage of pork loins was designed and validated in this study. Pork loins were stored at 3℃, -18℃, and -3℃ (freezing), and supercooled for 16 days. All samples remained in a supercooled state and were unfrozen at the end of storage. Supercooled pork loins were superior in terms of drip loss, cooking loss, and water-holding capacity compared to frozen samples. Additionally, supercooling treatment prevented discoloration, increase of volatile basic nitrogen, and microbial growth. Thus, supercooling of pork loin was achieved using a stepwise program and was effective to maintain meat quality.

  • To estimate headwater stream temperature with seasonal variations, we analyzed precipitation, runoff and air temperature in experimental forest of Kangwon National University, Gangwon-do (2017~2018 years). The daily mean value of headwater stream temperature for spring was 6.9~17.7℃ and correlated with air temperature, that for summer and fall were 12.2~26.3℃ and 3.6~19.3℃, correlated with air temperature and runoff. Based on seasonal variations, we applied for stepwise multiple linear regression analyses to estimate headwater stream temperature with seasonal variations. The equations were headwater stream temperature(WT)spring=(0.553×Air temperature)+(0.086×Runoff)+4.145 (R2=0.505; p<0.01), WTsummer=(0.756×Air temperature)+(-0.072×Runoff)+2.670 (R2=0.510; p<0.01), and WTfall=(0.738×Air temperature)+(0.028×Precipitation)+2.660 (R2=0.844; p<0.01). The coefficient of determination (R2) was greater than when it was estimated by air temperature in all seasons and progressively increased from spring to winter. Therefore, we indicated difference on estimated magnitude of stepwise multiple linear regression, due to effects on headwater stream temperature of different environmental factors with seasonal variations. Furthermore, temporal factors with spatial characteristics (e.g., river versus headwater stream) could be recommended for estimating headwater stream temperature.
