  • Tensile and J-R tests were carried out to estimate the effects of dynamic strain aging(DSA) on SA106Gr.C piping steel. Tensile tests were performed under temperature range RT to $400^{\circ}C$ md strain rates from $1.39{\times}10^{-4}\;to\;6.95{\times}10^{-2}/s$. Fracture toughness was tested in the temperature range RT to $350^{\circ}C$ and load-line displacement rates 0.4 and 4mm/min. The effects of DSA on the tensile properties were clearly observed for phenomena such serrated flow, variation of ultimate and yield stress, and negative stram rate sensitivity. However, the magnitude of serration and strength increase by DSA was relatively small. this may be due to high ratio of Mn to C. In addition, crack initiation resistance, Ji and crack growth resistance, dJ/da were reduced in the range of $200-300^{\circ}C$, where DSA appeared as serrated flow and UTS hardening. The temperature corresponding to minimum fracture resistance was shifted to higher temperature with increasing loading rate.

  • Compression tests were carried out to investigate morphologies of compressed specimen, deformation microstructure and stress-strain relation in high-nitrogen austenite stainless steel. Tests were performed under a wide range of temperature and, with true strain rates up to $\dot{\varepsilon}$ =0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and $1.0s^{-1}$. The activation energy of loading force was equal to plastic deformation energy within the temperature range of $900^{\circ}C$ to $1250^{\circ}C$. Dynamically recrystallized grain size decreased with an increasing strain rate and temperature. Flow stresses and deformation microstructures, were used to quantify the critical strain rate and recrystallized grain size. The grain size versus strain rate-temperature map obtained in the study was in good agreement with the deformation microstructures of compressed specimens.

  • The Rotor Stress Indicator is an integrated system of hardware and program components which has been designed to read an assortment of turbine temperature and speed input devices, perform an analysis of the temperature induced stresses and output pertinent temperature and stress information to guide the turbine operator during turbine prewarming, start-ups, load changes, and shut-downs. The purpose of the RSI is to provide guidance to the plant operator during startup, shutdown, loading, and unloading of the turbine. Since the stresses are a function of the temperature changes to which the turbine is exposed, the RSI also provides guidance for operation of the boiler main steam and reheat steam temperatures as they affect the rotor stresses. This may permit more efficient overall boiler turbine start-ups. In this paper, new rotor stress analysis algorithm for RSI is introduced and compared with present system which has been used in thermal power plant.

  • Although the net-shape molding of composites is generally recommended, molded composites frequently requires cutting or grinding due to the dimensional inaccuracy for precision machine elements. During the composite machining operations such as cutting and grinding, the temperature at the grinding area may increase beyond the allowed limit due to the low thermal conductivity of composites, which might degrade the matrix of composite. Therefore, in this work, the temperature at the grinding point during surface grinding of carbon fiber epoxy composite was measured. The grinding temperature and surface roughness were also measured to investigate the surface grinding characteristics of the composites. The experiments were performed both under dry and wet grinding conditions with respect to cutting speed, feed speed, depth of cut and stacking angle. From the experimental investigation, the optimal conditions for the composite surface grinding were suggested.

  • Track rubber parts has heat built-up as long as dynamic loading is applied from running tracked vehicles. Durability is required for rubber part to sustain the heat accumulation and heat exchange between rubber-metal assembly and environmental air and ground. For this research, the track assembly was divided into four parts i.e., bottom track shoe, upper track pad, pin busing and metal structure. Three rubber parts and metal structure were modelled and analyzed with MARC package program to obtain time-temperature data which was induced form mechanical work of tracked vehicles. heat accumulation data was obtained from special experiments under the room temperature of 25$^{\circ}C\;and\;35^{\circ}C$ to simulate the actual environmental conditions. From this research, it is cleared that the environmental temperature does not affect to the heat accumulation speed in rubber parts. Also, the heat built-up mechanism was clarified from the thermo-mechanical work based on numerical analysis and experiments.

  • Current investigation deals with the thermal stability characteristics of carbon nanotube reinforced composite beams (CNTRC) on elastic foundation and subjected to external uniform temperature rise loading. The single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are supposed to have a distribution as being uniform or functionally graded form. The material properties of the matrix as well as reinforcements are presumed to be temperature dependent and evaluated through the extended rule of mixture which incorporates efficiency parameters to capture the size dependency of the nanocomposite properties. The governing differential equations are achieved based on the minimum total potential energy principle and Euler-Bernoulli beam model. The obtained results are checked with the available data in the literature. Numerical results are supplied to examine the effects of numerous parameters including length to thickness ratio, elastic foundations, temperature change, and nanotube volume fraction on the thermal stability behaviors of FG-CNT beams.

  • This article provides an overview of the design methodology used to develop a conceptual set of reactivity control mechanism of a micro reactor based on the U-Battery. The U-Battery is based on remote deployment and therefore it is favourable to provide a long fuel lifecycle. This is achieved by implementing a high fissile loading content, which proves challenging when considering reactivity control methods. This article follows the design methodology used to overcome these issues, with an emphasis on a new concept of a moveable moderator which utilises the size of the U-Battery as a small reduction in moderation provides a significant reduction in reactivity. The latest work on this project sees the moveable moderator investigated during a depressurised loss of forced coolant accident, where a reduction of moderator volume increases the maximum fuel temperature experienced. The overall conclusion is that the maximum fuel temperature is not significantly increased (4 K) due to the central reflector region relatively lower volumetric heat capacity compared to that of whole core. However, a small temperature increase is observed immediately after the transient due to the central reflector removal because it reaches energy equilibrium with the fuel region faster.

  • The combustion characteristics have been investigated to develop the 50 kW-class gas turbine combustor. The combustor design program was developed and applied to design this combustor. The combustion air which has the temperature of 45, 200, $300^{\circ}C$ were supplied to combustor for elucidating the effect of inlet air temperature on CO, NOx emissions and flame temperature. The exit temperature and NO were increased and CO was decreased with increasing inlet air temperature. Also, the effect of equivalence ratio was considered to verify the combustor performance. The emissions of CO and NO with inlet air temperature can be analyzed qualitatively by measuring the temperature inside the combustor. The combustion performance with fuel schedule was evaluated to get the informations of the starting and part loading process of gas turbine. The combustion was stable above the equivalence ratio of 0.18. The pattern factor which is the important parameter of combustor performance was satisfied with the design criterion. Consequently the combustor was proved to meet the performance goal required for the target gas turbine system.

  • Plastic behaviors, based on the von Mises yield criterion, of circular discs containing a purely elastic, circular inclusion under uniform temperature loading are studied with the finite element analysis. Temperature-dependent mechanical properties are considered for the matrix material only. In addition to analyzing the plane stress and plane strain disc, a 3D thin disc and cylinder are also analyzed to compare the plane problems. We determined the elastic irreversible temperature and global plastic collapse temperature by the finite element calculations for the plane and 3D problem. In addition to the global plastic collapse, for the elastically hard case, the plane stress problem and 3D thin disc may exhibit a local plastic collapse, i.e. significant pile up along the thickness direction, near the inclusion-matrix interface. The pileup cannot be correctly modeled by the plane stress analysis. Furthermore, due to numerical difficulties originated from large deformation, only the lower bound of global plastic collapse temperature of the plane stress problem can be identified. Without considerations of temperature-dependent mechanical properties, the von Mises stress in the matrix would be largely overestimated.

  • Elastoplastic analysis of an annular disc, being fully constrained on its outer rim and interacting with a purely elastic inclusion perfectly bonded with its inner rim, is conducted to study its plastic deformation and residual stress under thermal cycles. The system is termed the composite disc. Quasi-static plane-strain deformation is assumed, and the von Mises yield criterion with or without the Ludwik hardening rule is adopted in our finite element calculations. Effects of multiple material properties simultaneously being temperature dependent on the plastic behavior of the composite disc are considered. Residual stress is analyzed from a complete loading and unloading cycle. Results are discussed for various inclusion radii. It is found that when temperature dependent material properties are considered, the maximum residual stress may be greater than the maximum stress inside the disc at the temperature-loaded state due to lower temperature having larger yield stress. Temperature independent material properties overestimate stresses inside materials, as well as the elastic irreversible temperature and plastic collapse temperature.
