Lithological and petrochemical characteristics and tectonic setting of the Cretaceous volcanic rocks in Hampyeong area located in the southwestern part of Okchon Zone, were studied by field survey and petrochemistry of major, trace, and rare earth elements. The $SiO_2$contents of the volcanic rocks range from 50.8 to 77.2wt.%. With increasing $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3\;^T$, $TiO_2$, MnO, CaO and MgO contents decrease and $K_2O$content increase, but $Na_2O$content is scatter to the trend. According to TAS and AFM diagrams, the Cretaceous volcanic rocks are calc-alkaline series. On the discrimination diagram of $K_2O$versus $SiO_2$, the volcanic rocks belong to high-K rocks series. The trace element compositions and REE patterns of the volcanic rocks, characterized by a high LILE/HFSE ratio and enrichments in LREE, indicate that they are typical of continental margin arc calc-alkaline volcanic rocks associated with the subduction environment. The ratios of Ba/Ta and Ba/La indicate that they are associated with volcanic arc-related magmatism. The Cretaceous volcanic rocks in Hampyeong area might be located in the Eurasian continental margin, related to the Pacific type tectonic environment during the Cretaceous times.
Jeju Island, a volcanic island located in South Korea, has been one of the main targets of geophysical and/or geological studies because of its tectonic importance related to the volcanism and tectonic link to the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Recently, as a number of broad-band magnetotelluric (MT) measurements were made, we have examined the deep part of the island. In such an insular setting, it is not easy to properly recover the deep structures such as the lower crust and the upper crust using MT data, because their low-frequency components are strongly affected by the surrounding sea of the island. In this study, we apply the sea-effect correction to the existing MT data collected at a total of 102 sites in Jeju Island. The sea-effect correction makes remarkable changes in the observed MT data at frequencies below 1 Hz, clearly indicating the existence of a conductive lower crust. The 2-D inversion results for both Jeju Southern Line (JSL) and Jeju Northern Line (JNL) show that the transition zone separating the resistive upper crust and conductive lower crust exists at a depth of 20 km on average.
Selection of good mineralized area is a combination of the integration of all the available geo-scientific (i.e., geological, geochemical, and geophysical) information, extrapolation of likely features from known mineralized terrenes and the ability to be predictive. The time-space relationships of the hydrothermal deposits in the East Asia are closely related to the changing plate motions. Also, two distinctive hydrothermal systems during Mesozoic occurred in Korea: the Jurassic/Early Cretaceous deep-level ones during the Daebo orogeny and the Late Cretaceous/Tertiary shallow geothermal ones during the Bulguksa event. Both the Mesozoic geothermal system and the mineralization document a close spatial and temporal relationship with syn- to post-tectonic magmatism. The Jurassic mineral deposits were formed at the relatively high temperature and deep-crustal level from the mineralizing fluids characterized by the relatively homogeneous and similar ranges of ${\delta}^{18}O$ values, suggesting that ore-forming fluids were principally derived from spatially associated Jurassic granitoid and related pegmatite. Most of the Jurassic auriferous deposits (ca. 165-145 Ma) show fluid characteristics typical of an orogenic-type gold deposits, and were probably generated in a compressional to transpressional regime caused by an orthogonal to oblique convergence of the Izanagi Plate into the East Asian continental margin. On the other hand, Late Cretaceous ferroalloy, base-metal and precious-metal deposits in the Taebaeksan, Okcheon and Gyeongsang basins occurred as vein, replacement, breccia-pipe, porphyry-style and skarn deposits. Diverse mineralization styles represent a spatial and temporal distinction between the proximal environment of sub-volcanic activity and the distal to transitional condition derived from volcanic environments. However, Cu (-Au) or Fe-Mo-W deposits are proximal to a magmatic source, whereas polymetallic or precious-metal deposits are more distal to transitional. Strike-slip faults and caldera-related fractures together with sub-volcanic activity are associated with major faults reactivated by a northward (oblique) to northwestward (orthogonal) convergence, and have played an important role in the formation of the Cretaceous Au-Ag lode deposits (ca. 110-45 Ma) under a continental arc setting. The temporal and spatial distinctions between the two typical Mesozoic deposit styles in Korea reflect a different thermal episodes (i.e., late orogenic and post-orogenic) and ore-forming fluids related to different depths of emplacement of magma (i.e., plutonic and sub-volcanic) due to regional changes in tectonic settings.
The area of the study is located in Ogcheon district, middle part of Ogcheon Fold Belt. The area is covered by metasedimentary rocks of Ogcheon Supergroup at northern, eastern and southern part. Jurassic Ogcheon granite which intruded into Ogcheon Supergroup at central part, was intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry at western part. The granite consists of quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, biotite, sphene, apatite, epidote, opaque and so on. It is generally characterized by grey to light grey, medium-grained, mafic enclave and partly weak foliation. In terms of geochmical compositions, the granite is felsic, peraluminous, subalkaline and calc-alkaline, and it was differentiated from single granitic magma. It shows parallel LREE enrichment and HREE depletion patterns with 0.84 Eu negative anomaly, which has REE variation trend and anomaly value similar to Jurassic granites in Korea. From charactristics of petrology, mineralogy and geochmistry, it may be interpreted that the Ogcheon granite body was derived from melting of I-type crustal material related to syn-collisional tectonic setting and emplaced more or less rapidly into the Ogcheon Supergroup.
Foliated granites between Damyang and Jinan are subdivided into Daegang foliated granite, Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, Sunchang foliated granodiorite, Foliated two mica granite and Samori foliated granite by mineral and texture. From EPMA data of the foliated granites following results are achieved. Composition of plagioclase are correspond to andesine, oligoclase and albite in Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, Sunchang foliated granodiorite and other foliated granites, respectively. And amphiboles are calcic hornblende in Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, and riebeckite in Daegang foliated granite. In differentiation index(D. I.) and Larsen index(L. I.), Daegang foliated granite, Foliated two mica granite and Samori foliated granite which belong to granite are 83.12-95.54 and 25.86-29.05 and Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite and Sunchang foliated granodiorite of diorite to granodiorite are 54.99-78.54(D. I.) and 6.48-21.01(L. I.). Harker and AMF diagrams plotted from foliated granites show that the granites are product of calc alkali rock series orignated from co-magma. Characteristic foliation of foliated granites fromed by ductile deformation at deep zone of dextral strike slip fault. Foliated granites are considered as a series of differentiated product of Triassic Igneous activity of Songrim disturbance. According to REE, (La/Lu) and Eu/Sm, Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite and Sunchang foliated granodiorite are correspond to granodiorite, and other foliated granites are monzo-and syeno-granite. Foliated granites having 0.20-0.01 of Em/Sm ratio are plutons emplaced by the tectonic setting in continents and continental margin.
Main aspect of this study is to clarify the petrochemistry and petrogenesis of intermediated-basic plutons located in the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula. These Intermediated-basic plutons consist of Pre-Cambrian anorthosite-gabbro, Triassic hornblende gabbro (Jirisan area), Jurassic diorite-syente (Jirisan and north area) and Cretaceous gabbro-diorite (south area). The Massif type anorthosite has multi intrusions, where each one intruded by gabbroic rocks, composed of gabbro, norite, troctolite and leucogabbro. In the variation diagram of the major-minor composition, AMF and Pl-Px-Ol diagrams, we suggest that intermediated-basic plutons in the southwestern part of the Korea show a trend consistent to Daly's value and calc-alkaline rock series. Accoding to REE (La/Yb)cw and Eu/Sm, these plutons are enriched with LREE than HREE, and emplaced by the tectonic setting in continent and/or continental margin.
The area of this study is located in the Sang dong district, Youngwol Gun, Kangwon Do, where the Ogcheon fold belt comes into contact with the Ryongnam massif. The area is covered by the Precambrian metasedimentary rocks of Yulri Group in the south from the line of Ungyosan-Maebongsan-Jansan-Taebaegsan Mountains and by the Cambro-Ordovician sedimentary rocks of Choseon Supergroup in the north. The Choseon Supergroup unconformably overlies the Yulri group. Several granitic intrusives occur in the Precambrian and Cambro-Ordovician terrain. The purpose of this study is to clarify the geochronology, mineralogical composition, geochemical characteristics, petrogenesis and tectonic settings of the Precambrian granitic rocks, and to evaluate the P.T. conditions of granitic intrusions. The K/Ar ages obtained from the muscovite of Nonggeori Granite, Naedeogri granite and pegmatite intruded into the Yulri Group are Early Proterozoic ($1805{\pm}18Ma$ to $1642{\pm}23Ma$), and those from the migmatitic pegmatite are Late Carboniferous ($305{\pm}4Ma$), respectively. The Precambrian granitic rocks are characterized by the presence of muscovite, tourmaline and grey feldspar with faint lineation of mafic minerals. In terms of mineralogical and chemical composition, the granitic rocks are felsic, calc-alkalic, peraluminous and S-type (ilmenite-series). The geochemical characteristics of major and trace elements indicate that the granitic rocks belong to syn-collision setting at the compressional plate margin. They were formed by progressive melting of relatively homogeneous crustal materials under 1~3kb and $670^{\circ}{\sim}720^{\circ}C$ in aqueous fluid conditions, and the Naedeogri granite was more fractionated than the Nonggeori granite. During the Taebaeg disturbance, Nonggeori granite, Naedeogri granite and pegmatite were intruded and emplaced into the Yulri Group. Migmatitic pegmatite occurring in the southwestern area, however, gave much younger muscovite age than the pegmatite intruded into the Yulri Group in rest of the area did, that might be due to the regional metamorphism of the Post-Choseon disturbance. The Geodo granitic mass and the Imog granite were intruded during the Bulgugsa disturbance.
Seismic reflection profiles and exploratory drilling well samples from the southern marginal-continental shelf basin of Korea delineate that the Tertiary sedimentary sequences can be grouped into five sequences (Sequence A, Sequence B, Sequence C, Sequence D and Sequence E, in descending order). Paleontologic data, K-Ar age datings, correlation with tuff layers and sequence stratigraphic analysis reveal that the sequences A, B, C, D and E can be considered as the deposits of Holocene $\~$ Pleistocene, Pliocene, Late Miocene, Early $\~$ Middle Miocene and Oligocene, respectively. The sequence stratigraphic and structural analyses suggest that the southern part of the Cheju Basin had experienced severe folding and faulting. NE-SW trending strike-slip movement is responsible for the deformation. The sinistral movement of strike-slip fault ceased before the deposition of Sequence B. Age dating and rare-earth elements analysis of volvanic rocks reveal+ that the Sequence D was deposited during the Early $\~$ Middle Miocene and the Sequence I was deposited earlier than the deposition of the Green Tuff Formation. Sedimentary petrological studies indicate that sediments of the Sequence I came from the continental block provenance. After the deposition of the Sequence E, uplift of the source area resulted in increase of sediment supply, subsidence and volcanic activities. The Sequence D show these factors and the sediments of the Sequence D are considered to be transported from the recycled orogenic belt.
The Au-Ag lode deposits in South Korea are closely associated with the Mesozoic granitoids. Namely, the Jurassic deposits formed in mesozonal environments related to deep-seated granitoids, whereas the Cretaceous ones were developed in porphyry-related environments related to subvolcanic granitoids. The time-space relationships of the Au-Ag lode deposits in South Korea are closely related to the changing plate motions during the Mesozoic. Most of the Jurassic auriferous deposits (about $165{\sim}145$ Ma) show fluid characteristics typical of an orogenic-type gold deposits, and were probably generated in a compressional to transpressional regime caused by an orthogonal to oblique convergence of the Izanagi Plate into the East Asian continental margin. On the other hand, strike-slip faults and caldera-related fractures together with subvolcanic activity are associated with major strike-slip faults reactivated by a northward (oblique) to northwestward (orthogonal) convergence, and probably have played an important role in the formation of the Cretaceous Au-Ag lode deposits (about $110{\sim}45$ Ma) under a continental arc setting. The temporal and spatial distinctions between the two typical Mesozoic deposit styles in South Korea probably reflect a different thermal episodes (i.e., late orogenic and post-orogenic) and ore-forming fluids related to different depths of emplacement of magma due to regional changes in tectonic environment.

The Gogunsan Archipelago is composed of two island groups; the first group includes Mal-do, Myeong-do, Gwangdae-do, and Bangchuk-do islands consisting of Neoproterozoic rocks, and the second group includes Yami-do, Sinsi-do, Muneo-do, Jangja-do, and Seonyu-do islands consisting of Cretaceous rocks. The first group mainly consists of the Bangchuk formation which can be divided into two layers; the lower layer was more deformed than the upper layer. The former was intruded by mafic and felsic volcanic rocks formed in the volcanic arc tectonic setting 930-890 Ma and the latter was deposited ca. 825-800 Ma. In these islands, large scale folds with east-west fold axes were beautifully formed; the Maldo island fold was designated as natural monument and large scale beautiful chevron fold was developed on the Gwangdae-do island. In addition, there are unique zebra-shaped outcrop formed by a mixing of basic and acidic magma and Independent Gate shaped outcrop formed by coastal erosion. On the other hand, the Yami-do, Sinsi-do, Muneo-do, Jangja-do and Seonyu-do islands consist of 92-91Ma Cretaceous volcanic rocks and, in Sinsi-do island, the Nanshan formation deposited ca. 92 Ma. These Cretaceous volcanic rocks formed by melting of the continental crust by the heat supplied from the uplifting mantle due to the extension caused by a retreat of subducting ocean slab. Yami-do and Sinsi-do islands are composed of rhyolite. In Yami-do island, bands with vertical joint formed by cooling of the bottom part of the lava, are shown. In Sinsi-do island, large-scale vertical joints formed by cooling of lava flow, were developed. The Jangja-bong of Jangja-do island and Mangju-bong of Seonyu-do island are composed of brecciated rhyolite and formed a ring shaped archipelago contributing to the development of marine culture by providing natural harbor condition. They also provide beautiful views including 'Seonyu 8 views' along with other islands. As mentioned above, the Gogunsan archipelago is rich in geoheritages and associated cultural and historical resources, making it worth as a National Geopark.
