  • Objectives: The objectives of this study are to estimate the inhalation exposure level of benzene for workers using Tier 1 exposure models ECETOC TRA (European Center for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals Target Risk Assessment) and Stoffenmanager, and to investigate their reliability for exposure assessment in K-REACH. Methods: Two exposure scenarios, 'manufacture of benzene' and 'use as solvents,' were developed for assessment of workers' exposure to benzene. The Process Category (PROC) for ECETOC TRA was collected from the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) registration dossier, and the Activity for Stoffenmanager was converted from PROC using translation of exposure models (TREXMO). The information related to exposure, such as working duration, Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE), Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV), and Risk Management Measure (RMM) were classified into high, medium, and low exposure conditions. The risk was determined by the ratio of the estimated exposure and occupational exposure limits of benzene. Results: Under high exposure conditions, the worker exposure level calculated from all PROCs and Activities exceeded the risk level, with the exception of PROC 1 and Activity 1. In the medium exposure condition, PROC 8a, 8b, and 9 and Activity 3, 7, and 8 all exceeded the risk, whereas in the low condition, all PROCs and Activities were determined to be safe. As a result, action corresponding with the low exposure condition is required to reduce the risk of exposure among workers in workplaces where benzene is manufactured or used as a solvent. In addition, the predicted exposure levels derived from the exposure models were lower than measured levels. The exposure levels estimated from Stoffenmanager were more conservative than those from ECETOC TRA. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the feasibility of exposure models for exposure assessment through the example of occupational inhalation exposure assessment for benzene. For more active utilization of exposure models in K-REACH, the exact application of collected information and accurate interpretation of obtained results are necessary.

  • This study investigates the relationship between the damage patterns and structural performance levels of a multi-strand 7-wire strand that is used as an important member of stay cables. Stay cables are continuously damaged after completion, and corrosion is the main cause. However, it is difficult to check the damage pattern inside the cable due to its structural characteristics, and it is difficult to evaluate the degradation level of the damage quantitatively. This study derives the relationship between the damage pattern and the performance level of the stranded wire by comparing results and analyzing them through an indoor experiment and finite element analysis. In order to simulate the damage of a 7-wire strand, artificial damage was applied by mechanical precision machining to perform a performance evaluation. The results of the analysis show that regardless of the damage size of the strand, the structural performance deteriorated immediately after the damage. It was experimentally and analytically deduced that the type and amount of damage should be considered as a parameter for evaluating the performance level of the strand. This information can be used for the safety management of a cable stayed bridge by constructing a database according to the pattern and amount of damage.

  • The government is mapping out R&D innovation measures aimed at improving the qualitative level of the performance of national R&D projects that are supported by grants or public funds. This paper proposes ways of making improvements in technology planning, project assessment, performance management, and results evaluation in order to boost the efficiency of the country's promotion of ICT R&D projects, as well as to upgrade the processes involved with its technological innovation system at each of the commercialization stages of its R&D projects. According to our experts' in-depth survey and interview, it has been found that technology planning is the most important phase in the full cycle-based technological innovation system and that the promotion of a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches is the most reasonable. This paper also suggests it is necessary to secure a process for exploring technological opportunities as the preparatory phase for technology planning, and that it is desirable to reflect the technology demand map associated with the technology road map. Currently, R&D projects are divided into policy designation, designation contest, and free contest. To minimize the inefficiency associated with indiscriminate competition, this paper proposes the introduction of a general contest system in order to change the project assessment system into one based on the results of the competition in each category(e.g. firms, universities, research institutions, etc.).

  • The current experiment was designed to evaluate the efficacy of adding the multi-enzyme mixture (Natuzyme) into layers' diets with different levels of energy and available phosphorus in relation to laying performance, egg qualities, blood cholesterol level, microflora and intestinal viscosity. Two hundred and fifty 43-wk-old Hy-Line commercial layers were divided into five groups with five replicates per group (10 birds per replicate) and fed one of five experimental diets. A corn and soybean meal-based control diet was formulated and used as a control diet. Two experimental control diets were formulated to reduce energy and crude protein contents (rE) or energy, crude protein and phosphorus contents (rEP). In addition, Natuzyme was added into either rE (rE-Natu500) or rEP (rEP-Natu500) diet to reach a concentration of 500 mg per kg of diet. The experiment lasted 8 weeks. There were no significant differences in feed intake, egg production, egg weight, egg qualities such as eggshell color or Haugh unit, total cholesterol, relative organ weights and cecal microflora profiles between any dietary treatments. Natu500 supplementation into the rE diet, but not rEP diet significantly increased egg mass and eggshell qualities such as strength and thickness, but it decreased cecal ammonia concentration and intestinal viscosity in laying hens. In conclusion, the present study shows that adding multiple enzyme preparation could improve performance of laying hens fed energy and protein restricted diets.

  • To assist operators to properly assess the current situation of the plant, accurate fault diagnosis methodology should be available and used. A reliable fault diagnosis method is beneficial for the safety of nuclear power plants. The major idea proposed in this work is integrating the merits of different fault diagnosis methodologies to offset their obvious disadvantages and enhance the accuracy and credibility of on-line fault diagnosis. This methodology uses the principle component analysis-based model and multi-flow model to diagnose fault type. To ensure the accuracy of results from the multi-flow model, a mechanical simulation model is implemented to do the quantitative calculation. More significantly, mechanism simulation is implemented to provide training data with fault signatures. Furthermore, one of the distance formulas in similarity measurement-Mahalanobis distance-is applied for on-line failure degree evaluation. The performance of this methodology was evaluated by applying it to the reactor coolant system of a pressurized water reactor. The results of simulation analysis show the effectiveness and accuracy of this methodology, leading to better confidence of it being integrated as a part of the computerized operator support system to assist operators in decision-making.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the microbial (Total aerobic count, Coliform, Coagulase positive Staphylococci, Salmonella, Yeast/Mold, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus), Hunter'color values ($L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$) and organoleptic quality of freeze-dried Miyeokguk, Korean seaweed soup in space food. Bacillus cereus was 1 log level while not detected in the sample irradiated at 10 kGy. Hunter's color values of the samples irradiated less than 10 kGy was not significantly different (p>0.05). The sensory evaluation result showed that the preference scores in all the sensory properties decreased when it was irradiated over 10 kGy, but sensory score of less than 10 kGy samples was similar in all terms. Therefore, it was considered that gamma irradiation at 10 kGy was enough to sterilize the freeze-dried Miyeokguk without deterioration of sensory quality.
