  • The PEFP (Proton Engineering Frontier Project) is constructing a 100MeV proton Linac (Linear Accelerator). The 20 MeV 20 mA proton beam has been serviced for an application in the fields of material, biological, information technology and medical sciences. For a stable and efficient acceleration of a proton beam, the control requirements must be optimized by studying various control methods. We propose that the integrated control system for the Linac machine components must be based on a distribution control method to improve a centralized control system. Based on EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) real-time software, the VME (Versa Module European package format) IOC (Input Output Controller) was developed under cross development environment with a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) PowerPC system. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of distributed control system using the VME-based EPICS middleware for various components of the large proton accelerator.

  • In the response to the demand for electrical energy, much effort was given to develop and commercialize high temperature superconducting (HTS) power equipment has been made around the world. Especially, a HTS transformer is one of the most promising devices. Recently, Korea Polytechnic University and Gyeongsang National University are developing a power distribution and transmission class HTS transformer that is one of the 21st century superconducting frontier projects in Korea. For the development of 154 kV class HTS transformer, the cryogenic insulation technology should be established. We have been analyzed insulation composition and investigated electrical characteristics such as the breakdown of $LN_2$, barrier, kapton films, and the surface flashover of FRP in $LN_2$. Furthermore, we are going to compare with measured each value and apply the value to the most suitable insulating design of the HTS transformer.

  • In symmetric cryptography, a cryptographically secure Substitution-Box (S-Box) is a key component of a block cipher. S-Box adds a confusion layer in block ciphers that provide resistance against well-known attacks. The generation of a cryptographically secure S-Box depends upon its generation mechanism. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for the construction of cryptographically secure S-Boxes. This framework uses a combination of linear fractional transformation and permutation functions. S-Boxes security is analyzed against well-known security criteria that include nonlinearity, bijectiveness, strict avalanche and bits independence criteria, linear and differential approximation probability. The S-Boxes can be used in the encryption of any grayscale digital images. The encrypted images are analyzed against well-known image analysis criteria that include pixel changing rates, correlation, entropy, and average change of intensity. The analysis of the encrypted image shows that our image encryption scheme is secure.

  • Ubiquitous computing is one of the key technology areas in the "Project on Development of Ubiquitous computing and network technology" promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a frontier business of the $21^{st}$ century in Korea, which is based on the new concept merging physical space and computer-based cyber space. With recent advances in Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) technology, low cost and low-power consumption wireless micro sensor nodes have been available. Using these smart sensor nodes, there are many activities to monitor real world, for example, habitat monitoring, earthquake monitoring and so on. In this paper, we introduce web-based real environment monitoring system incorporating wireless sensor nodes. It collects sensing data produced by some wireless sensor nodes and stores them into a database system to analyze. Our environment monitoring system is composed of a networked camera and environmental sensor nodes, which are called Mica2 and developed by University of California at Berkeley. We have modified and ported network protocols over TinyOS and developed a monitoring application program using the MTS310 and MTS420 sensors that are able to observe temperature, relative humidity, light and accelerator. The sensed data can be accessed user-friendly because our environment monitoring system supports web-based user interface. Moreover, in this system, we can setup threshold values so the system supports a function to inform some anomalous events to administrators. Especially, the system shows two useful pre-processed data as a kind of practical uses: a discomfort index and a septicity index. To make both index values, the system restores related data from the database system and calculates them according to each equation relatively. We can do enormous works using wireless sensor technologies, but just environment monitoring. In this paper, we show just one of the plentiful applications using sensor technologies.

  • Gas insulated switchgear is large-sized electric equipment for providing a reliable supply of electric power. Recently, seismic tests of electric equipment using a shaking table have been mandated because seismic performance has become an increasingly important issue. However, basic analysis methods continue to be used because some electric equipment is too large for shaking table facilities. Thus, a reliable analysis method should be developed for large-scale electric equipment. This study aims to evaluate the seismic qualification of a 245kV GIS in accordance with IEEE-693 and to validate the analysis method by comparing it with test results. Both the test and the analysis showed that the 245kV GIS has proper seismic safety. Furthermore, the differences between the analysis and the test results are less than 10% for an accurately given mass, stiffness, and input acceleration. It is expected that this study can be used for the seismic qualification of large-scale electrical structures.

  • Hydrogen energy is emphasized as a substitutable energy of carbon-based energy system in the future, since it is non-depletable and clean energy. Long term vision of Korean government on the national energy system is to promote hydrogen energy by 15% of final energy demand until 2040. This study analyzes economic impacts of hydrogen energy development employing a dynamic CGE model for Korea. Frontier technology such as hydrogen energy is featured as slow diffusion at the initial stage due to the learning effect and energy complementarity. Without government intervention, hydrogen energy would be produced upto 6.5% of final energy demand until 2040. However, if government subsidizes sales price of hydrogen energy by 10%, 20%, and 30%, share of hydrogen energy would increase 9.2%, 15.2%, and 37.7% of final energy demand. This result shows that the slow diffusion problem of hydrogen energy as frontier technology could be figured out by market incentive policy. On the other hand, production levels of transportation sector would increase while growth rate of oil and electricity sectors would decline. Household consumption would be affected negatively since increase of consumption due to the price decrease would be overwhelmed by income reduction owing to the increase of tax. Overall, GDP would not decrease or increase significantly since total production, investment, and export would increase even if household consumption declines.

  • This study analyzed the institutional characteristics of large scale national R&D policies in Korea. The analysis examined the continuity and change of the policy institution. It dealt with G7 Project, 21C Frontier Project, and Next Generation Growth Engine Project as the major large scale national R&D policies in Korea. The theoretical approach of this study is to the continuity and change or evolution of policy institution from the perspective of new institutionalism. Based on the theoretical analysis, it emphasized the analysis of the institutions in three different levels: macro, meso, and micro level. In the analysis, the research examined the idea of policy institution or policy goal, participants in the policy institution, and policy instruments in different levels. The outcome of the analysis shows that the policy of large scale national R&D in Korea has the institutional continuity in the macro level. In the meso level, however, the policy institution changes due to the administration change and the influence of political economic environment. In the micro level, the policy institution changes based on the symbolic influence of policy goal and the interest of bureaucrats. The research finds that the micro and meso level institutional changes cause the evolution of policy institutions and the major change of policy institution.
