  • There is increasing need for high-strength steel especially for the high-rise steel building structure. High- strength steels, however, may have mechanical properties that are significantly different from those of the conventional steels. The application of high-strength steels to building structures should be reviewed as to whether inelastic behavior equivalent to that of conventional steels can be attained or not. In this study, SM570TMC steel, which was developed recently in Korea, was tested to evaluate mechanical properties and welding characteristics for use as a structural steel. Yield phenomenon of SM570TMC steel, which is continuous yielding, is quite different from that of conventional steel. The distributions of yield strength of SM570TMC steel were uniform regardless of thickness, while the minimum yield strength was 440MPa. Also, the flat distributions of hardness in z-direction were found to comprise one of the important properties. Results of the charpy impact tests at -5oC revealed toughness values of SM570TMC steel, which were higher than those of equivalent as rolled steel. Carbon equivalent(Ceq) values of SM570TMC steel, which were related to welding performance, were lower than those of equivalent as rolled steel.

  • Simplification of the manufacturing process in shoe making is essential to improve productivity and reduce production costs. To improve the adhesion of EVA foam used as a midsole, EVA/itaconated EPDM(EPDM-g-IA)(80/20wt%) blend was prepared using Torque Rheometer-Plasti-Corder, and 1,6-hexamethylenediamine/crosslinking agent/foaming agent/additive were mixed, followed by amidation reaction and foaming to prepare EVA/EPDM-g-IA foam for shoe midsole. In this study, we investigate the effect of the content of 1,6-hexamethylenediamine(0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0) on the mechanical properties, water-contact angle and adhesion of EVA/itaconated EPDM foam. As the content of 1,6-hexamethylenediamine increased, mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, tensile elastic modulus, hardness, and water-contact angle were lowered, but elongation at break and compression set(%) were increased. Both normal type and non-UV type adhesive strength increased with increasing diamine content. In particular, it was found that the adhesion strength of the non-UV type adhesion increased sharply with increasing diamine content. As a result, an adherend rupture occurs in a foam sample having a content of 1,6-hexamethylenediamine of 3phr. From this, it can be seen that the EVA/itaconated EPDM foam for shoe midsoles, which can be used for non-UV adhesion without primer and UV treatments, have been developed.

  • The use of genetically cloned xylanase acquired from Bacillus strearthermophillus improves bleachability for oak kraft pulps. Combination of xylanase(X). oxygen(O), ozone(Z). peroxide(P), alkaline extraction(Eo. Eop), and chlorination(C/D, D) have been tested in a variety of bleaching sequences. The effectiveness of xylanase pre-treatment(XO) and post-treatment(OX) in oxygen bleaching is mainly compared. With xylanase treatment the brightness increase by 1.5-2.1% ISO in OZEP, OZEoP, OZEopP and OPZP sequences. There is only numerically difference of brightness gains between OX and XO sequences. With xylanase treatment chemical requirements for bleaching decrease by 42.6-48.6% in OC/DEoD sequence and 47.9-54.7% as active chlorine in OC/DEopD sequence at the same brightness. the reduction of bleaching chemicals is higher in XO sequence than those in OX sequence. Following xylanase treatment the viscosity increases from 11.7-12.0 mPa·s to 12.4-13.5 mPa·s and the brightness stability is considerably improved however the difference of effectiveness between XO and OX sequence is not present. Compared to tensile index vs tear index, the physical properties are similar for TCF bleaching sequences with and without xylanase treatments. However in OC/DEoD and OC/DEopD sequences the physical properties decrease with xylanase treatment. There is no difference in the physical properties between XO and OX sequences. COD, BOD and color of bleaching effluents increase slightly with xylanase treatment, however the discharge of COD end-load into environmental impact decrease.

  • Due to tightened environmental regulations on halogen type flame retardants, the portions of those based on phosphorous compounds that are non-halogen type is rising. When producing functional film, the physical and thermal properties become distinctly different depending on the amount of Red-phosphorus(RP) addition which causes flame resistance. The physical properties of resin fall in big scale when too much flame retardants are added, and it is hard to be applied to functional films such as shrink or anticorrosive film. The purpose of this research is to study the effects on mechanical, physical, and other properties of RP-LDPE films by changing the RP-MB contents. The LDPE film used for this study was produced through blow-type injection molding. The flame resistance was VTM-0, and the tear resistance showed inverse trends of MD and TD. Contraction percentage showed no relationship with the amount of RP content, but the anti-corrosive property showed 0.05 % better result than the national anti-corrosion shrink film reliability standard.

  • Effect of processing agents on physical properties on aniline-type leathers such as wet blue, crust leather, and finished leather has been investigated. These leathers were manufactured from pelts obtained by the chemical, the enzyme, and the bio-tech treatment. There was no difference in physical properties between crust leather and finished leather. All finished leathers with the three treatments were satisfied with the Korean Industrial Standard like a tensile strength of $1.2kg_f/mm^2$, an elongation of 30%, a tear strength of $3.0kg_f/mm$, a grain crack weight of $15kg_f$, and a $Cr_2O_3$ content of 2.5%. In peculiar, application of the bio-tech treatment gave the best leather. This improvement of physical quality could be explained by the results of SEM and image analyser.

  • The effect of additives on the mechanical properties of polyurethane foam were investigated. The resin used in this study was prepared by adding catalyst, surfactant and cross-linker to both KONIX FA-703 polyether polyol(80%) and KONIX FA-733 polyether polyol(20%). The polyurethane was foamed by adding equivalent amount of isocyanate(TDI-80, prepolymer M-200, pure MDI) to the resin and was used in property measurements after 72 hours hardening. The physical properties of polyurethane foam were investigated in terms of density, tensile strength, tear strength, elongation, sound absorption coefficient and gel profile measurements. The effects of surfactant on the cell size was investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The sound absorption coefficient was directly related to the cell size. The physical properties were improved with increasing amount of surfactant(L-5309) until 1.0 part per hundred polyol(1.0pphp).

  • The NR films were prepared with mixing of natural rubber latex(NRL) with various additives, and NR/CR films were prepared by blend ratio of chloroprene rubber latex(CRL). The swelling degree and the mechanical properties of these films were measured according to the procure time. As a result, optimum condition were showed the swelling degree : 80~85%, precure time : 48~60hrs., and tensile strength was reduced but elongation was increased as increasing the blend ratio of CRL. On the mechanical properties of films prepared by different dipping process in these optimum condition, the tensile strength and tear strength of NR/CR films by one dipping process are better than NR-d-CR films by two dipping process. The surface of these films were observed with scanning electron microscopy(SEM). It was found that phase separation was occured as increasing the blend ratio of CRL.

  • In this study, fatigue properties and crack growth characteristics of a polycarbonate (PC) were examined during cyclic loading at various mean stress (${\sigma}_{amp}$) and stress amplitude (${\sigma}_{mean}$) conditions. Different S vs. N and da/dN vs. ${\Delta}K$ relations were obtained depending on the loading condition. The higher fatigue strength and the higher resistance of crack growth are seen for the PC samples cyclically loaded at the higher mean stress and lower stress amplitude due to the low crack driving force. Non-linear S - N relationship was detected in the examination of the fatigue properties with changing the mean stress. This is attributed to the different crack growth rate (longer fatigue life): the sample loaded at the high mean stress with lower stress amplitude. Even if the higher stress amplitude, the low fatigue properties are obtained for the sample loaded at the higher mean stress. This was due to the accumulated strain energy to the sample, where severe plastic deformation occurs instead of crack growth (plasticity-induced crack closure). Shear bands and discontinuous crack growth band (DGB) are observed clearly on the fracture surfaces of the sample cyclically loaded at the high stress amplitude, where the lower the ${\sigma}_{mean}$, the narrower the shear band and DGB. On the other hand, final fracture occurred instantly immediately after the short crack growth occurs in the PC sample loaded at the high mean with the low ${\sigma}_{amp}$, i.e., tear fracture, in which the shear bands and DGB are not seen clearly.

  • In this study, SBR (Styrene-butadiene rubber: solid content: 25 wt%) nanocomposites reinforced with carbon/organoclay(C18-MMT) were manufactured by a latex method. The SBR nanocomposites was made with the dual phase fillers. The mixing ratios, i.e. carbon black/C18-MMT, were 50/0, 49/1, 48/2, 47/3, 45/5, 44/6, 40/10. Total filler content of compounds was restricted to 50 phr. Cure characteristics and mechanical properties of SBR nanocomposites with carbon black and C18-MMT were evaluated. The SBR nanocomposites containing 49/1 ratio of carbon black/C18-MMT showed good dispersity and excellent values of ODR torque, tensile strength, modulus and tear energy. It was found that the improvement of the mechanical properties was mainly due to the reinforcing effect, i.e., the improvement of dispersion of silicates in the rubber matrix.
