This paper analyzes the in-service training program for the 1st grade English teacher in the following 7 regions: Taejeon, Seoul, Incheon, Kangwon, Kyeonggi, Chungnam and Chungbuk. It also investigates the actual conditions of the program. The analyses are performed on three categories of subjects: Teaching Profession, Refinement and English Education. The English Education category can be divided into the three aspects: language skills, communicative skills and language learning/teaching skills. Among the 7 regions, subjects under Teaching Profession, Refinement and English Education have a significant (2-3 times +/-) variance in terms of the number and credit hours of the courses. While the Refinement Program is above the standard set by Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development(MEHRD) in some regions, the Teaching Profession Program and the English Education Program is below the standard set by MEHRD in other regions. To overcome the weaknesses of the program, this paper suggests the following: 1) prescriptions for the proportion ratio of each category should be suitably modified. 2) MEHRD should observe and supervise the program of each region. 3) being organized, the program must have two parts as follows: the same mandatory subjects for all regions and optional subjects suited to each region.
This study pointed out the reality that many novice Korean language teachers who lack rater training are scoring the learners' writing skill. The study performed and analyzed a case where pre-service teachers were educated in order to explore the possibility of promoting rater training in a Korean language teacher training course. The pre-service teachers majoring in Korean language education at the graduate school scored TOPIK compositions and were provided feedback by the FACETS program, which were further discussed at the rater meeting. In three scoring processes, the raters scored with conscious of own rating patterns and showed positive change or over correction due to excessive consciousness. Consequentially, ongoing training can improve rating ability, and considering the fact that professional rater training is hard to progress, the method composed of FACETS analysis and rater training revealed positive effects. On the other hand, the rater training including native Korean and non-native(Chinese) speakers together showed no significant difference by mother tongue but by individual difference. This can be interpreted as a positive implication to the rating reliability of non-native speakers possessing advanced Korean language abilities. However, this must be supplemented through extended research.
This case study aims to investigate how a primary English teacher's professional development was pursued through novice teacher mentoring after the six-month intensive in-service teacher training program(IIETTP). The teacher was involved in mentoring two novice teachers working at the same school. They observed each other's classes and exchanged their views on the classes, focusing on areas to be improved. The observation was done within a framework that consisted of pre-, during- and post-observation sessions. Data was gathered through retrospective entries kept after the post-observation meetings. The entries were categorized according to their saliency, frequency and recurring patterns identified. The findings reveal that learning from the training course could be applied professionally and could serve to bridge the gap between training and teaching. It is also shown that the mentee teachers' professional development was enhanced and the mentor teacher herself benefited from the collaborative learning process involved with working with the novice teachers. Some suggestions are made for the effective implementation of school-based teacher development programs after the IIETTP.
The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in perceptions of the categories of environmental education and environmental education professionalism of teachers participating in a in-service teacher training programs for environmental education. For this study, surveys and interviews were conducted before and after participation of 20 elementary and secondary school teachers who had participated in 'in-service teacher training program for professional development in environmental education' in August of 2005. Before participation, most of teachers answered that 'Education for Environment' was essential factor among the categories for environmental education. After participation, 15 teachers retained their perception but 5 teachers had changed to 'Education about Environment' or 'Education for Environment'. Environmental professionalism was conducted in '5 ability categories of environment teachers' of Hungerford et al.(1994). Categories has goal domains such as 'Goal domain I (level of basic)', 'Goal domain II (level of conceptual perceptions)', 'Goal domain III (level of investigating and evaluation)', 'Goal domain IV(level of environmental action skill)', 'Goal domain V(level of educational apply)'. Before participation, teachers had a low level of professionalism in environmental areas, but after participation environmental education professionalism improved significantly into the all 'Goal domains'.
In this study, the educational effect was investigated by providing a teaching program so that pre-service chemistry teachers could apply model ignorance education to teacher training practice. The teaching program was constructed in consideration of the sensemaking concept proposed in the study of Odden & Russ and the process of teacher sensemaking proposed by Asli et al. The subjects of this study were 23 pre-service teachers in the 4th year of chemistry education department at a teacher training university in the central region of Korea. In order to form a sensemaking for the model's ignorance education, the teaching program consisted of four stages; the initial idea generation stage, cognition of model's ignorance stage in a inconsistent situation, the lesson strategy construction stage for model ignorance education, and lesson plan & practice stage during teacher training practice. In the first stage of this program, pre-service teachers' initial ideas about the Arrhenius model and Bronsted-Lowry model of acid-base reaction, and the electron transfer model of the oxidation-reduction reaction were investigated. In the second stage, inconsistant situation that cannot be explained by the knowledge of model was presented to recognize the ignorance of the model. The third stage was to develop the teaching ability of model's ignorance through textbook analysis and lesson strategy composition activities. As a final stage, during the teacher training practice, the pre-service teachers were asked to plan and practice the implementation of the model's ignorance education. Through the teaching program to form a sensemaking for ignorance education of the models, pre-service teachers had come to recognize the ignorance of the model, acquired ability to organize and execute lesson strategies reflecting model ignorance, and acquired recognition of the educational value and necessity of teaching the ignorance of models.

The purpose of this research is intended to analyze the actual condition of in-service training for the teachers who teach Home Economics Education in the middle and high school and to survey their viewpoints on the actual condition of the in-service training. So I could find the effective ways on the in-service training by finding many kinds of needs and improvements on the basis of present problems in the Home Economics Education. The research results are as follows : 1. This research indicated that most teachers answered that the most proere significant per time of the in-service training was the school vacations(49.5%). 63.4% of the teachers answered that the present 60 hours on the question of how many hours are appropriate is proper. On the question of what the most proper cycle for the educational training is. 47.2% of the teachers answered that the present 3-year cycle is appropriate. 35% of them supported the selecting system for the trainee according to the experienced or non-experienced for the up-to-date in-service training. And 35% of them answered that the speakers for the training program must be the experienced teachers in education. In the contents of the training program. many teacher insisted that the percentage of the text for the major should be raised(49.6%). According to the survey about the teaching and learning methods and evaluation. teachers were satisfied with the levels of satisfaction on the teaching and learning methods in 65.1%. This survey indicated that teacher preferred the discussion and case study(35.9%). the practice-centered class(29.3%) and the on-the-spot study(20.9%) in order on the teaching methods. In terms of the educational environment. 56.9% of the teachers answered the number of trainee is too many and they suggested that the proper number of trainee is about 20∼30. 2. This research showed that the most important problem of this training system was the over-population of the trainee(33.5%) and the most severe problem of the educational environment was the lack of air-cooled and heated system(24.8%).

In this paper, we propose the elementary school teacher's training direction for effective SW education. In an effort to better understand the efficient SW training contents and methods for teachers, 200 of elementary teachers had been selected from different places in South Korea. The results showed that 1)it should be operated by focusing on the training of female teachers, especially, strengthening the contents of SW ethics. 2)It will need to actively operate the teacher training program to foster the necessary computational thinking and programing for elementary school teacher who work in big cities. 3)It need to create a training program for expanding the SW studying groups. 4)In order to improve the effectiveness of training courses in the development of in-service training programs, the SW ethics contents need to be coordinated with the link the computational thinking and programing. These results are expected to provide the efficient methods to design the future SW training programs.

The purpose of this study was to develop an effective mentoring program model. In order to develop an effective mentoring program, we identified four elements of mentoring program based on the analysis of secondary science teachers perceptions of in-service science teacher training program and mentoring. For the study, a questionnaire was developed by the authors and it was administrated to 114 secondary science teachers participated in science teacher training program. The interviews were conducted with 14 secondary science teachers. The results of this study are as follows: Most of the secondary science teachers recognized that in-service science teacher training program, which they had taken, positively affected their teaching. However, there are some aspects needed for improvements in the current teacher training program. They wanted to take the opportunities to interact with their colleagues and researchers, sharing their experiences on teaching within the teachers' community, and reflecting on their own teaching. Based on these analysis we suggest four elements for effective mentoring program. These are 'Communication,' 'Reflection for Mentor,' 'Reflection for Mentee,' and 'Evaluation.' In addition, the mentoring program is proposed to consist of four activities such as 'Feedback on teaching', 'Seminar and Workshop', 'Conference', and 'Self-evaluation'.
Since 1998, an elementary teacher education institute in Korea has hosted the center for the gifted education. The institute hired undergraduate students to escort and liaison each class of the gifted student participants with assisting classroom activities. These liaison teachers observed the gifted classroom activities and evaluated them by using a given checklist and filling out pre-made evaluation forms. Currently this system is being transferred from part-time jobs for students to earn allowance into well organized pre-service teacher program focusing on the gifted education. In other words, the purpose of system is being shifted from how liaison teachers facilitate the gifted program to how the system helps the liaison teachers to be quality teachers for the gifted who can understand what the gifted are and how to facilitate them. Analyzed were the self reports of the liaison teachers regarding their perceptions and beliefs of the gifted and their education program. It was found participant liaison teachers purposed to have more live experiences with getting along with students as well. Liaison teachers’ perceptions on establishing a gifted teacher professional education sequence were reported in this study. The potential scaffolding of the pre-service teacher education program model of the gifted education was provided as a consequence of this study.
The purpose of this study was to analyze elementary school teacher' expectation and reality before and after science experiment in-service training program. The surveys for before and after in-service training were conducted among 231 elementary school teachers who participated for science experiment in-service training. 5 elementary school teachers who took part in surveys were interviewed after training. The results of this study are as follows: First, teachers' interest for science increased regardless of willingness to training participation through science experiment training. Second, discussion for science teaching strategies were not enough while the training recognized with experiments and lecture of instructors mainly. Third, teachers prefered alternative experiments and practical experience of experiments to lecture and basic experiments based on textbook. Forth, assessment of teachers in training must be improved.
