  • The present study summarizes the taxonomic description and Korean distribution of 16 taxa that are recorded for the first time in Korea. These taxa classified into Chlorophyceae (Astrephomene gubernaculifera, Botryococcus protuberans, Chlorangiella polychlora, Cylindrocapsa geminella, Kirchneriella contorta var. gracillima, Korshikoviella gracilipes, Oocystis naegelii, O. ovalis, Stylosphaeridium stipitatum), Charophyceae (Cosmarium moniliforme, Cosmocladium constrictum, C. perissum), Xanthophyceae (Tetraedriella tumidulum, T. spnigera), Chrysophyceae (Cyclonexis erinus) and Cyanophyceae (Arthrospira platensis). Among these taxa, six genera including Astrephomene, Chlorangiella, Cosmocladium, Cyclonexis, Stylosphaeridium, and Tetraedriella are newly recorded in Korea.

  • Three species of Coccocarpia have been reported from Korean Peninsular. However, there was no revisional study on this genus before. After careful examination of the specimens deposited in the Korean Lichen Research Institute (KoLRI) and collected from main mountain areas of Korea, two species of Coccocarpia, C. palmicola and C. erythroxyli, have been revealed to occur and confirmed in South Korea. The presence and absence of isidia and apothecia are the most important characters for the South Korean species. We provide the detailed description and illustration of the available two species. A key to the species is also provided.

  • Chemotaxonomic and numerical identification were carried out for a isolate of Streptomyces strain SMF301 producing spores in submerged culture. Fifty taxonomic unit characters were tested and the data were analyzed numerically using the TAXON program. The isolate SMF301 was identified to cluster 1A of Streptomyces and best matched to Streptomyces limosus which is a synonym of Streptomyces albidoflavus. Therefore, it was concluded that the isolate was identified to be a member of Streptomyces alidoflavus.

  • Usnea Adans. is a somewhat rare lichen in South Korea, and, in nearly two decades, no detailed taxonomic or revisionary study has been conducted. This study was based on the specimens deposited in the lichen herbarium at the Korean Lichen Research Institute, and the samples were identified using information obtained from recent literature. In this study, a total of eight species of Usnea, including one new record, Usnea hakonensis Asahina, are documented. Detailed descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics are provided. A key to all known Usnea species in South Korea is also presented.

  • The present account briefly describes two crustose lichen species new to South Korea. Detailed taxonomic descriptions of Leiorreuma exaltatum and Trapelia coarctata, supported by distribution, ecology and illustrations, are provided. Both species were collected from warm-temperate, humid forests of Jeju Island.

  • $Lobaria$ (Schreb.) Hoffm is a common foliose lichen genus found on the Korean Peninsula, yet until now, no revision study has been done on this genus. After careful examination of specimens deposited in the Korean Lichen Research Institute (KoLRI), nine distinct species of $Lobaria$ were confirmed. Morphological characteristics such as the presence or absence of isidia, or whether or not the surface was ridged or smooth, and chemical characteristics such as the result of the medulla reaction were of significant importance in the differentiation of species. Here, we provided detailed descriptions together with a key to all the known Korean species.

  • This study describes a new record of a thelotremoid lichen (Leucodecton desquamescens) from South Korea. The taxon is characterized by thick, bulging thallus with many calcium oxalate crystal inclusions; an immersed, round to irregular ascomata with free exciple, ellipsoid to $\pm$ roundish submuriform, brown ascospores, and lack of secondary metabolites. A detailed taxonomic description and comments are presented for this taxon. The lichen genus Leucodecton is reported for the first time in South Korea.

  • Seventy-two lichen specimens of Cetrelia collected in South Korea since 2003 were examined by both phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses. The phenotypic analysis was based on morphological and chemical characters, and the phylogenetic analysis was based on nrDNA ITS sequences. The result suggested that the presence and absence of isidia, soredia, lobules and medullar reaction C+ or C- are the important characters in the taxonomy of this genus. Four species of Cetrelia, C. chicitae, C. braunsiana, C. japonica, and C. pseudolivetorum have been identified in this study. Description of each species is presented with morphological and chemical characters. A key to the Cetrelia species is also presented.
