Analysis of Task Commitment Types of Science Learning in High School Students' Biology Classification

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze task commitment types of science learning in high school students' biology classification. Thirty students were selected as the representatives of five task commitment types according to task commitment type inventory scores. They participated in think-aloud biology classification task. To analyze the procedural characteristics of task commitment, a coding scheme and think-aloud task were developed. Characteristics of respective task commitment types were identified from the result of the think-aloud protocol coding analysis. They are TGC(task goal commitment) type, LGC(low goal commitment) type, CC(conditional commitment) type, SC(suspended commitment) type, and DC(delayed commitment) type. Findings gained from this study are expected to serve as the foundation of task commitment enhancement strategies and as the information on the characteristics of each task commitment type. Also, future studies are required to investigate the commitment-related properties not only in biology classification but also in other science learning situations.

Development of An Inventory to Classify Task Commitment Type in Science Learning and Its Application to Classify Students' Types

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an inventory to classify task commitment types of science learning and to classify highschool students' task commitment types. Firstly, inventory questions were designed following the literature analysis on the task commitment components which involve self confidence, high goal setting, and focused attention. Prototype inventory underwent the content validity test, pilot test, and reliability test. Through these steps, final inventory was input to 462 high school students and underwent the factor analysis and cluster analysis. Factor analysis confirmed three components of task commitment as the three factors of inventory questions. In order to find how many clusters exist, factors of developed inventory became new variables. Each factor's factor mean was calculated and served as the new variable of the cluster analysis. Cluster analysis extracted five clusters as task commitment types. The 5 clusters were suggested by the agglomarative schedule and dendrogram gained from a hierarchical cluster analysis with the setting of the Ward algorithm and Squared Euclidean distance. Based on the factor mean score, traits of each cluster could be drawn out. Inventory developed by this study is expected to be used to identify student commitment types and assess the effectiveness of task commitment enhancement programs.

A Study on the Relationship between Nursing Organizational Culture of Military Hospital and Organizational Performance (군병원 간호조직문화와 조직성과에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This research was, by investigating the relations between the cultural types of a nursing organization in military hospital and performance, to ascertain the cultural types to be able to improve performance. Method: The date were gathered from 255 nurse officers who were in 19 military hospitals by using the self-report type of questionnaire. The period of data collection was from April 20, 2003 to July 15, 2003. For this research, the following tools were used: the tools for measuring the organizational characteristics, organizational culture, and job satisfaction, the tool for measuring organizational commitment. For data analysis the SPSS Win 12.0 program was used. Result: 1) Most of the cultural types of a nursing organization in military hospital is Relation-oriented. 2) In the relation between general the characteristics of subject and the organizational cultural type, there was a difference in the innovation-oriented, relation-oriented, hierarchy-oriented, and task-oriented culture according to nurse officers careers, hospital types, year in hospital, marital status, and unit(p<0.05). 3) In the relation between general characteristics of subject and organizational performance, there was a difference in the job satisfaction, affective commitment, transactional commitment, and normative commitment according to nurse officers careers, education, madrigal status and unit(p<0.05). 4) In the relationship between the of a military hospital were correlated with the type of each culture(p=0.00), 5) In the relation between the organizational culture type of military hospital and its performance, there was a positive correlation among job satisfaction and innovation-oriented culture, relation-oriented culture, task-oriented culture(p<0.05). And hierarchy-oriented culture showed that they had a weak negative correlation with job satisfaction(p<0.05). There was a positive correlation among affective commitment and innovation-oriented culture, relation-oriented culture, task-oriented culture(p<0.05). And hierarchy-oriented culture showed that they had a weak negative correlation with affective commitment(p<0.05). There was no culture type significantly related to continuance commitment and there was a weak positive correlation among normative commitment and innovation-oriented culture, relation-oriented culture, task-oriented culture. The types to have an influence upon nurse officers' job satisfaction were relation-oriented culture and innovation-oriented culture(p=0.00). And relation-oriented culture and innovation-oriented culture were major variances for affective commitment and only relation-oriented culture was influential variance for normative commitment(p=0.00). Conclusion: The organizational culture type was found which had an influence upon nurse officers' job satisfaction and organizational commitment. These result are very significant in having showed the persons in charge of nursing administration a basic data for creation of an effective organizational culture.

Effects of the Followership on Organizational Commitment, Job Satisfaction, Nursing Task Performance (간호사의 팔로워십에 따른 직무만족, 조직몰입 및 간호업무수행)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to find out the fact that the followership types of nurses would effect on job satisfaction, organizational commitment and nursing task performance. Methods: The sample consisted of 219 nurses working in 2 medical institutions. SPSS program was used for descriptive statistics, ANOVA, chi-square test, Duncan test, Pearson Correlation, and Multiple Regression. Results: In the followership type, effective follower was the largest as 47.0% and passive follower was 26.9%. Nurses who had a effective followership style had the highest level of organizational commitment, job satisfaction and those who had a passive followership style had the lowest level of organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and nursing performance. The followership was significantly related to the organizational commitment, job satisfaction and nursing task performance. The active involvement had a positive effect on the organizational commitment, job satisfaction and nursing task performance. The critical thinking had a positive effect on the job satisfaction. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that the most effective followership is effective follower. And organizational managers must take into account followership types when they develop the strategies for organizational effectiveness.

A Comparative Study on the Commitment of Health Manager Between Industrial Health Nurse and Industrial Hygienist (보건관리자의 직능별 직업 및 조직 헌신도에 대한 비교 연구)

  • This study was carried out in order to confirm the reliability and validity of the commitment inventory developed by Meyer and Allen, and to investigate commitment level of health manager, to compare two different professionals of health manager such as industrial health nurse and industrial hygienist to find out some characteristics that have effect on commitment. This survey was done by self-administered questionnaire to 227 respondents as the trainees of Industrial Safety Training Center, KISCO from June to December 1996. Authors classified commitment into two categories ; professional commitment and organizational commitment, and these two types of commitments have three different aspects ; affective, continuance, and normative commitment based on Meyer's inventory. The results were as follows; 1. Items of whole scales of the both type of commitments have three factors that represent three aspects of commitment ; affective, continuance, and normative commitment. This means that each type of commitment was reliable to use as measurement tool of three different aspects of commitment. Classification of items by factor analysis was more consistent in professional commitment than organizational commitment. Among 16 items of organizational commitment, four items were classified into different aspects of commitment with similar factor loading. 2. Commitment level of industrial health nurse was higher than that of industrial hygienist in affective, continuance professional commitment controlled by other characteristics. These differences can be due to other characteristics of specific task and background of health managers that were not used in this study. 3. The level of affective professional commitment was statistically different in age, sex, educational level, and that of organizational commitment was statistically different in only two variables such as age, and job tenure. The level of continuance professional and organizational commitments were different in sex group, but past history of employment have effect on continuance organizational commitment. The level of normative organizational commitment was affected by only age. As the above results, the tools of measurement of commitment developed by Meyer and Allen can be useful to measure the level of commitment of health manager. Three aspects of two types of commitments were influenced by different characteristics of health manager. Authors suggested future study on the affecting variables to the commitment such as background, task of health manager and organizational characteristics.

Effects of Personal and Job Characteristics on Organizational Commitment and Job Satisfaction of Daegu.Gyeongbuk Area Dietitians by Foodservice Employment Type (대구.경북지역 단체급식소 유형별 영양사의 개인특성과 직무특성이 조직몰입과 직무만족에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of personal and job characteristics on the organizational commitment and job satisfaction of dietitians employed in different foodservice settings. The subjects were dietitians(n=830) employed by schools, hospitals, and industries in Daegu Gyeongbuk area. A questionnaire was used to determine personal and job characteristics, commitment and satisfaction. Organizational commitment scores were the highest for hospital dietitians, and the lowest for industry dietitians (p<0.05). Industry dietitians felt significantly less loyal to their organizations than did the other dietitians(p<0.05). School and hospital dietitians were significantly more likely to say they cared about the fate of their organizations and thought their organizations were the best to work for. Age, education, length of employment, and wages were positively associated with hospital dietitians' commitment(p<0.05). For all dietitians, the fewer the work hours, the higher the commitment(p<0.05). When asked to rate their satisfaction with various aspects of their jobs, dietitians expressed the most satisfaction with co-workers, and the least satisfaction with promotion opportunities. School dietitians were significantly less satisfied with pay and promotion than were the other dietitians. Organizational commitment was associated with wages(0.05), autonomy(0.08), feedback(0.16), dealings with others(0.07), and task identity(0.09). Job satisfaction was affected by educational level(-0.13), wages(0.10), autonomy(0.18), friendship opportunities(0.14), feedback(0.16), task identity(-0.11) and organizational commitment(0.40) (Lisrel program).

The Relationship among Different Types of Intra-team Conflict and Their Effects on Commitment in R&D Teams (연구개발 팀에서 팀 내 갈등 간의 관계와 갈등이 몰입에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Teams play an indispensable role in helping an organization achieve its goal. Since constant interaction among team members is the cornerstone of team competitiveness, it is necessary for the team members to commit themselves to shared goals-team commitment, a type of positive, emotional attitude of team members. Constant interactions among team members, however, inevitably breed a byproduct called conflict. Though intra-team conflict has both positive and negative effects on team performance, little research has been done to clarify the roles that relationship, task and process conflicts play in team commitment. This research is an empirical investigation of the relationship among the three types of conflicts - relationship, task and process conflicts - based on data collected from 232 R&D teams of 13 Korean companies. The analysis suggests that, while relationship conflict has a negative impact on team commitment, task and process conflicts have no significant impact on team commitment. As for the relationships among those three types of conflict, process conflict has positively influenced task, and relationship conflicts and task conflict also has had a positive impact on relationship conflict. Based on these results, this study has presented its implications and directions for future research.

A Study on the relationship between nursing organizational culture and organizational performance (병원 간호조직문화와 조직성과에 관한 연구)

Method : The data were gathered from 487 nurses and 328 patients who were in eight general hospitals by using the self-report type of questionnaires. The period of data collection was from August 10, 2000 to September 10, 2000. For this research, the following tools were used; the tools for measuring the organizational characteristics, organizational culture, and job satisfaction, the tool for measuring organizational commitment, and the tool for measuring patients' satisfaction. For data analysis the SPSS Win 7.5 program was used. Result : 1) There was a significant difference in the organizational culture type according to the establishment type of hospital. 2) In the relationship between organization characteristics and organizational culture of a hospital were correlated with the type of each culture(p=0.00). 3) In the relation between the organizational culture type of hospital and its performance, there was a strong positive correlation between innovation-oriented culture and job satisfaction. And relation-oriented culture and task-oriented culture showed that they had a weak positive correlation with job satisfaction(p=0.00). There were a positive correlation between affective commitment and relation-oriented, innovation-oriented cultures(p=0.00), and there were no culture type significantly related to continuance commitment and there was a weak positive correlation among normative commitment and innovation-oriented culture, relation-oriented culture(p=0.00). 4) The types to have an influence upon nurses' job satisfaction were innovation-oriented culture and relation-oriented culture. These had 34.5% of influence with job satisfaction.. The type of organizational culture did not influence continuance commitment, but it had an influence on affective commitment and normative commitment. And relation-oriented culture and innovation-oriented culture had 21% of an influence with affective commitment, and they had 9.5% of an influence with normative commitment. Conclusion : As the above mentioned research results, the organizational culture type was found which had an influence upon nurses' job satisfaction and organizational commitment and patients' satisfaction in nursing service. These results are very significant in having showed the persons in charge of nursing administration a basic data for creation of an effective organizational culture.

Job Stress, Job Satisfaction, and Organizational Commitment according to Life Organization (LIFO) Behavior Type of Novice Nurses (초보간호사의 LIFO 행동유형에 따른 직무 스트레스, 직무만족도와 조직몰입)

  • Purpose: This study was done to provide data that would contribute to effective task performance in clinical nursing and development of nursing professional by understanding job stress, job satisfaction and organizational commitment according to Life Organization (LIFO) behavior types of novice nurses. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey and the participants were 313 novice nurses who worked in one university hospital located in the city of Gwangju. Data were collected through the structured questionnaires that included general characteristics, job stress, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment scales. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and ANOVA with SPSS/WIN 19.0. Results: Regarding job stress according to LIFO behavior types of novice nurses, there were statistically significant differences between the favorable situation and the unfavorable situation. There were also statistically significant differences regarding the organizational commitment according to LIFO behavior types. Conclusion: The results indicate a difference in behavior patterns of novice nurses that suggest a need for education in order to reduce stress from the job and enhance organizational commitment by developing each nurse's preferred pattern and compensating for unfavorable patterns, as well. There also needs to be nursing resources that take into consideration behavior patterns of novice nurses.

Determinants of Occupational Commitment of Dental Hygienists (치과위생사의 직업몰입 영향요인 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of the occupational commitment of dental hygienists in Korea. The independent variables contain three groups of work rewards variables which consist of task reward variables (autonomy, job significance, resource adequacy, role conflict, workload, and routinization), social reward variables(supervisory support, co-worker support, and negative affectivity), and organizational reward variables(job security and promotional chances), and eight sociodemographic variables. The sample of this study consisted of 474 dental hygienists who work at general hospitals, university hospitals, dental hospitals and clinics across the nation. Data were collected with self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using hierarchical regression technique. It was found that: (1) job significance have a significant positive effect on the occupational commitment of dental hygienists; (2) role conflict, workload, routinization, and type of work site have significant negative effect on the occupational commitment of dental hygienists; (3) the study model explains 23.7% of the variance in occupational commitment among dental hygienists. The results of the study indicate that managers of dental clinics and hospitals should make efforts to extend the scope and quality of dental hygienists' work through job enlargement and job enrichment.
