Biomass gasification is a promising technology in terms of clean energy and flexible options for end use such as heat, steam, electricity, gaseous or liquid fuels. In a gasification process, reduction of tar is very important because it can cause any mechanical problems and small tar implies high energy efficiency. However, generation and conversion mechanisms of tar have not been fully understood due to its complex nature. In this study, characteristics of tar generated from different gasification stages were investigated. Korean pine woodchip was used as feedstock and tar was sampled in a separate way during devolatilization and char gasification stage, investigated. As a result. more various kinds of hydro carbon compounds were identified in the devolatilization stage than char gasification stage because primary tar compounds are released mostly from pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose. When the reaction temperature increased up to $900^{\circ}C$, tar composition becomes simplified into about 10 aromatic compounds mostly with 1-4 rings without substitution up to phenanthrene. The sampled tar in the char gasification stage mostly contains 5-7 simple aromatic compounds.
This research was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of one- and dual-stage recycled-water systems in slurry bioreactor treatment for coal tar-contaminated soil. Silty loam soil was used for this research. Coal tar and 14 target PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) concentration in the soil were determined with gas chromatography. There was no significant difference between removal efficiencies of one- and dual-stage recycled water systems in case of about 4,000 mg coar tar/kg. However, the dual-stage system increased significantly the removal efficiency in case of about 20,000 mg coar tar/kg and the first-order kinetic constant of the system was over 1.5 times higher than that of one-stage recycled water system. 3-Ring compounds in PAHs was removed completely within 30 days of operation. Coar tar was removed in over 96% through biodegradation and removed in about 4% by evaporation. High correlation coefficient($r^2=0.91$) was found between water solubility and removal efficiency of the cyclic compounds.
Purification of indole contained in model coal tar absorption oil was examined by extraction-distillation-crystallization combination. The absorption oil consists of nine components such as four kinds of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds (9.2% quinoline, 2.4% iso-quinoline, 4.7% indole, 2.4% quinaldine), three kinds of bicyclic aromatic compounds (14.2% 1-methylnaphthalene, 31.8% 2-methylnaphthalene, 23.5% dimethylnaphthalene), 5.5% biphenyl and 3.3% phenyl ether. 99.5% indole was recovered by combination of formamide extraction-distillation-solute crystallization using n-hexane. Furthermore, the recovery process of indole contained in coal tar absorption oil was studied by using the experimental results obtained by each operation of this work.
Coal tar is the primary feedstock of premium graphitizable carbon precursor. Coal tars are residues formed as byproducts of thermal treatments of coal. Coal tar pitches were prepared through two different heat treatment schedules and their properties were characterized. One was prepared with argon and oxidation treatment with oxygen; the other was prepared with oxygen treatment at low temperature and then argon treatment at high temperature; both used coal tar to prepare coal tar pitches. To modulate the properties, different heat treatment temperatures ($300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$) were used for the coal tar pitches. The prepared coal tar pitches were investigated to determine several properties, such as softening point, C/H ratio, coke yield, and aromaticity index. The coal tar pitches were subject to considerable changes in chemical composition that arose due to polymerization after heat treatment. Coal tar pitch showed considerable increases in softening point, C/H ratio, coke yields, and aromaticity index compared to those characteristics for coal tar. The contents of gamma resin, which consists of low molecular weight compounds in the pitches and is insoluble in toluene, showed that the degree of polymerization in the pitches was proportional to C/H ratio. Using an oxidizing atmosphere like air to prepare the pitches from coal tar was an effective way to increase the aromaticity index at relatively low temperature.
Biomass-derived tar and waxy compounds have a highly negative effect on the separation and purification of paclitaxel and should be removed prior to final purification. Adsorbent treatment is a simple, efficient method for removal of tar and waxy compounds from plant cell cultures. In this study, we optimized the important process parameters (adsorption temperature, time, solvent type and adsorbent amount) of adsorbent treatment with Sylopute to remove the tar and waxy compounds in a pre-purification step. The optimal adsorption temperature, adsorption time, solvent type, and crude extract/Sylopute ratio were $30^{\circ}C$, 15 min, methylene chloride, and 1:1(w/w), respectively. This result could be confirmed by HPLC analysis of the absorbent after treatment and TGA of the organic substances that were bound to the adsorbent. In adsorbent treatment step, the purity seemed to show a small improvement but this treatment had a significant effect on convenience and feasibility of following steps by the removal of tar and waxy compounds.

Pitch synthesis reaction was studied based on the effect for chemical composition of feedstock. Feedstock was selected as pyrolyzed fuel oil (PFO) and coal-tar (CT), which are by-products in petroleum and steel industry. Pitch was prepared at $420^{\circ}C$ for 180 minutes on atmospheric pressure by thermal treatment. Thermal stability and softening point (SP) of the prepared pitches were investigated and their molecular weight distribution was analyzed by MALDI-TOF. PFO has various aliphatic compounds and coal-tar has high aromaticity with 3 wt% of primary quinoline insolubles. The thermal property of PFO was enhanced with polymerization reaction during the thermal treatment with increased molecular weight range. But CT was inferior to PFO because of side reaction by hetero elements. CTP was appeared molecular weight by 0~200 m/z.
The separation of indole from a model mixture comprising four kinds of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds [indole (In), quinoline (Q), iso-quinoline (iQ), quinaldine (Qu)], three kinds of bicyclic aromatic compounds [1-methylnaphthalene (1MN), 2-methylnaphthalene (2MN), dimethylnaphthalene (DMN)], biphenyl (Bp) and phenyl ether (Pe) was examined by batch cocurrent 4 stages equilibrium extraction. The model mixture used as a raw material in this work was prepared according to the components and compositions contained in coal tar fraction (the temperature ranges of fraction: $240{\sim}265^{\circ}C$). An aqueous solution of formamide was used as a solvent. Indole was recovered more than 99% through 4 stages of the equilibrium extraction. The range of selectivity of indole in reference to DMN obtained through the 5 stages equilibrium extraction was found to be 63~118. The process for separation and recovery of indole contained in coal tar was studied by using the experimental results obtained from this work and the previous work.
In this study, the tar compounds derived from the plant cell cultures of Taxus chinensis were first identified and then quantified via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography (GC). 2-Picoline, 2,5-xylenol, acenaphthene, 1-methylnaphthalene and o-xylene were found to be the major tar compounds by biomass. These compounds were identified and confirmed by comparing their retention times with those of authentic compounds. Each compound also spiked with the pure standard. The contents of 2-picoline, 2,5-xylenol, acenaphthene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and o-xylene in biomass were 0.2512, 0.1586, 0.1240, 0.0942 and 0.0525 wt%, respectively. Liquid-liquid extraction and adsorbent treatment were able to remove 42% and 94% of the tars from biomass, respectivly. After hexane precipitation, all of the tars were perfectly removed.
This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of recycled-water addition on the treatment of coar tar-contaminated soil with slurry phase bioreactor. A bench-scale slurry phase bioreactor was maintained to optimize the microbial growth. Silty loam soil was used for this research. Concentrations of coal tar and 14 target PAHs (Polyunclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons) in the soil were determined with gas chromatography. Addition of recycled-water to slurry phase bioreactor was not significantly increased the removal efficiency of 2000 mg coar tar/kg. However, it significantly increased the removal efficiency of 20000 mg coar tar/kg. In 20000 mg coar tar/kg, the first order kinetic constant and the removal efficiency of the reactor with recycled-water addition were 2.5 and 2.0 times higher than those of the reactor without recycled- water addition. Coar tar in the slurry phase bioreactor was removed in 3.8~16.0% by vaporization and biodegraded in 84.0~96.2%. Removal efficiency of 3-ring compounds was high as 92.2~99.7% in the case of recycled-water addition. However, removal efficiencies of 3 and 4-ring compounds were low as 0~30%.
Coal tar pitch was used to study the effect of the pyrolysis conditions to produce mesophase pitch used as a matrix precursor for carbon/carbon composites. The pyrolysis conditions were presented in all cases that the total pressure was 1 atm and the first stage temperature was changed from 25$0^{\circ}C$ to 34$0^{\circ}C$ to remove the low molecular weight compounds in the pitch, and then, heated to 40$0^{\circ}C$ to form anisotropic mesophase as the second stage temperature. The first stage temperature was very affected to form resulting anisotropic mesophase pitch. The resulting mesophase pitches show a significantly increased anisotropic contents upto 30$0^{\circ}C$. However, the contents of mesophase were decreased above 30$0^{\circ}C$. It was the reason that the first stage temperature had been control the number of free radicals to react the aromatic compounds in the pitch to form high molecular weight compound. Therefore, the two stage pyrolysis method could be very effectively used to control various contents of anisotropic polyaromatic mesophase compared to continuous to continuous heating method.
