저마찰 박막코팅 적용 타펫 부품의 마찰 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Friction Characteristics of Tappet by Low Friction Coating)

  • The wear of the contact in the tappet accounts for the greatest portion of entire friction loss of an engine, leading to the occurrence of abnormal wear. The coated specimens for earn-tappet wear test were producted by using PVD-Sputtering coating method. It examined the friction characteristics occurring between the earn and the tappet by using the dedicated wear tester and found that the friction torque value was reduced through comparison testing with the existing part when the low friction coating was applied. So application of the low friction coating to actual vehicles will reduce the fuel economy and occurrence of noise-vibration.

  • Cam/tappet wear is one of the critical concerns in valve train deign. Maximum contact stress and minimum oil film thickness between the cam and tappet are usually checked for the estimation of wear characteristics. If the two extreme cases arise simultaneously, there is a strong possibility of cam/tappet wear. In this paper, effects of valve train layout on the wear characteristics were studied. Especially for swinging arm type valve trains, initial geometric layout must be very carefully defined to avoid wear problems. The study was performed fur an end pivot type OHC valve train, which had severe wear problems. Analysis results show that some geometric parameter affect very sensitively on the wear characteristics. Experiments were also performed for the original and modified valve trains, which strongly support the analysis results.

디젤엔진용 소결(W/C35%Ni) 태핏의 마멸거동에 관한 연구 (A Study on Friction and Wear Characteristics of Sintered W/C-35%Ni Tappets for Diesel Engine Application)

  • Abstract- In this paper tribological characteristics of solid and liquid phase sintered W/C-35%Ni tappets were investigated. Three test methods were performed to investigate the wear and surface damage mechanism of sintered tappets. First, block-on-ring wear test was performed to investigate the wear characteristics under pure sliding condition. Second, simplified cam and tappet tests (called component wear test hereafter) were carried out to simulate the real contact history of cam and tappet. Also, after the test, contact surfaces were analyzed with scanning electron microscope to study the wear mechanism. As a final screening, engine dynamo tests were performed. Results showed that in the block on ring sliding wear test, solid phase sintered specimens showed superior wear resistance to liquid phase sintered specimens. The component wear tests and engine dynamo tests also showed the same results. Therefore, in these tests, solid phase sintered tappet material revealed superior wear resistant properties to liquid phase sintered one.

  • The valve train system of engines has long been a sensitive area with respect to wear performance because of the high contact loads and surface sliding speeds encountered. In particular, wear problems of load-carrying components in relative motion, such as cam and tappet in valve train system have made troubles. To overcome these problems, combination of proper materials is important, as well as selecting of high wear performance materials. This paper presents the experimental result of friction and wear properties of ca/tappet materials. To investigate friction and wear properties for several combinations of materials, using commonplace tribometer(Plint 77, reciprocating type), we make a selection of a optimum material combination.

밸브 간극에 따른 밸브트레인 거동 연구 (Study of Valve Train Motion According to Valve Clearance)

  • 기계적 태핏은 유압 태핏과 비교하여 원가와 마찰 손실을 줄일 수 있어 사용된다. 그러나 기계적 태핏은 캠과 밸브 사이의 간극을 조절하는 기능이 없으므로 밸브의 열팽창을 고려하여 캠과 밸브 사이의 거리를 측정하여 선정된다. 그러므로 충분한 워밍 업 후에는 밸브 간극이 거의 없지만 그 전에는 밸브 간극이 존재한다. 특히 냉간 작동 조건에서는 비교적 큰 편이고 소음과 진동 같은 문제를 발생시킬 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 밸브 간극을 변경시켜 가며 각각의 조건에서의 밸브 리프트, 속도, 가속도, 시팅 속도, 바운싱 높이 등에 대하여 시험과 해석을 통하여 연구되었다. 밸브 간극이 증가할수록 램프 구간이 감소하게 되어 밸브의 거동에 좋지 않은 영향을 미치는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Oil Film Thickness Measurement of Engine Bearing and Cam/tappet Contact in an Automotive Engine

  • The capacitance technique was used to measure the minimum oil film thickness in engine bearing and the central oil film thickness between cam and tappet. This method is based on the measurement of total capacitance of oil film. For the measurement of the oil film thickness between cam and tappet, two surfaces were assumed to be flat and parallel within the Hertzian region and all the measured capacitance originated from this region. Shear rates from the measured minimum oil film thickness are over 10$^{6}$ sec$^{-1}$ in the greater part in both two cases. The minimum oil film thickness in engine bearing is larger than the surface roughness. Between cam and tappet it is mostly smaller than the surface roughness. In spite of the awkward restriction of the reliability of measured oil film thickness, it was known that the capacitance technique makes it possible to measure the oil film thickness in elastohydrodynamic and mixed lubrication regimes as well as in hydrodynamic regime. Therefore, it is also possible to classify the lubrication regimes based on the oil film thickness.

밸브트레인용 롤러태핏 하우징의 제작 공정 개발 및 시제품 평가 (Production Process Development and Prototype Evaluation for Roller Tappet Housing of Valvetrain)

  • 본 연구에서는 엔진의 밸브트레인에 적용되는 롤러 태핏 하우징의 냉간단조 공정을 개발하였다. 시제품을 제작하였으며, 태핏 하우징의 내구성 평가를 통하여 작동성을 확인하였다. 소재 시편의 압축시험을 통하여 태핏에 사용되는 소재의 물성을 확보하고 상용 소프트웨어인 Deform-3D을 이용하여 단조해석을 수행하였다. 해석결과를 바탕으로 냉간단조 공정을 설계하였으며, 실제 금형을 제작하고 시제품을 제작하였다. 제작한 시제품의 평가를 위하여 치수정밀도, 표면조도, 평행도, 동심도를 확인하였으며, 목표한 항목에 모두 부합하는 결과를 확인하였다. 또한 제품의 작동성 및 내구성 평가를 수행하기 위하여, 엔진 밸브트레인의 구동을 모사하는 별도의 시험장치 개발을 완료하였다. 디젤엔진의 아이들 상태를 가정하여 작동성을 평가하고, 엔진의 최고 회전수를 가정하여 내구성 시험을 진행하였다. 시험결과 태핏하우징의 마모는 시험 전, 후 외경 치수 0.002 mm 감소로, 미소한 마모를 보였다. 본 연구를 통하여 정밀 냉간단조 기술을 이용한 제품개발 프로세스를 정립하였다. 또한 본 연구에서 개발한 작동성 평가 시험기를 통해 밸브트레인용 부품의 작동성 및 내구성 평가 시험이 가능할 것으로 사료된다.

타펫개구장치에서의 원격종동절 캠 설계 (Design of a disk cam with remote follower in a tappet shedding device)

  • A method for the design of a disk cam with a remote follower is presented. ADAMS software is utilized for the design process. The whole process is applied for the design of a cam profile to be used in a tappet shedding device of a shuttle loom. First the desired motion of the remote follower, the hearld frame in this case, is determined to improve the characteristic of a certain weaving process. Next, the desired displacement data is input to the ADAMS software and the cam profile is obtained as an output. To test the validity of the proposed method, designed cams were actually manufactured and implemented on a experimental loom. And with the help of potentiometer type displacement transducers, the motion of the remote followers were actually recorded. And the result was sufficient to prove the validity of the presented method.

Mixed Lubrication Analysis of Cam/Tappet Interface on the Direct Acting Type Valvetrain System

  • This paper reports on the mixed lubrication characteristics between the cam and the tappet contact surface of direct acting type valve train systems. First, the dynamic characteristics are solved by using the lumped mass method to determine the load conditions at the contact point. Then, the minimum oil film thickness is calculated with consideration of elastohydrodynamic line contact theory and the friction force is obtained by using the mixed lubrication model which separates the hydrodynamic and the boundary friction. Finally, the average surface temperatures are calculated by using the flash temperature theory. The results show that, there are some peaks in the friction force due to the asperity contact friction, and flash temperature at the position of minimum oil film thickness. It is thought that there is a relationship between the surface temperature and cam surface wear, and therefore, the analysis on the worn cam profile has been performed.

  • Recently, there has been an active study about friction force of moving parts for automotive. This study is development and evaluation of oil pockets for journal bearing and tappet valve for range extended electric vehicle. Specially, oil pockets are effect on friction force depend on pitch, size, depth. In this study, fine oil pocket was formed using by etched texturing on the journal bearing and tappet valve. And oil pocket analyzed by SEM and friction force test was carried out by tensile tester. Finally, in this study, it was suggested by round and plane part which journal besring and tappet valve.
