  • Cryogenic insulation systems, with proper materials selection and execution, can offer the highest levels of thermal performance. Insulations are listed in order of increasing performance and, generally, in order of increasing cost. The specific insulation to be used for a particular application is determined through a compromise between cost, ease of application and the effectiveness of the insulation. Consequently, materials, representative test conditions, and engineering approach for the particular application are crucial to achieve the optimum result. The present work is based on energy cost balance for optimizing the thickness of insulated chambers, using foamed or multi layered cryogenic shell. The considered insulation is a uniformly applied outer layer whose thickness varies with the initial and boundary conditions of the studied vessel under steady-state radial heat transfer. An expression of the optimal insulation thickness derived from the total cost function and depending on the geometrical parameters of the container is presented.

  • Seismic fragility curves of concrete cylindrical tanks are determined using the finite element method. Vulnerabilities including sloshing of contents, tensile cracking and compression failure of the tank wall due to bending are accounted for. Effects of wall flexibility, fixity at the base, and height-diameter ratio on the response are investigated. Tall, medium and squat tanks are considered. The dynamic analysis is implemented using the horizontal components of consistent earthquakes. The study shows that generally taller tanks are more vulnerable to all of the failure modes considered. Among the modes of failure, the bending capacity of wall was shown to be the critical design parameter.

  • This paper is studied on the Junctiion of the large tank and the cylinderical outlet such as a pressure vessel attached a pipe or nozzle theoretically. It is assumed that the diameter of tank is much larger than that of the nozzle, so it can be approximated that nozzle is attached to plate. The analysis procedure can be viewed as the solution of interdependent subproblems: (a) the stress analysis of the cylinderical shell(nozzle), (b) the plane-stress analysis of the plate membrane problem, and (c) the analysis of the transverse bending deformation in the plate. On the procedure of (a), the Flugge formula are used, and the variables are the length and the ratio of the thickness to the radius of cylinderical shell. The solutions of thess problems are interrelated in the total solution through continuity and equilibrium conditions at the interface of middle planes of the plate and cylinderical shell.

  • Overpressurization can occur due to the ignition of flammable vapors existing inside aboveground oil storage tanks. Such accidents could happen more frequently than other types of accident. In the tank design, when the internal pressure increases, the sidewall-to-roof joint is expected to fail before failure occurs in the sidewall-to-bottom joint. This design concept is the socalled "frangible roof joint" introduced in API Standard 650. The major failure mode is bifurcation buckling in this case. This paper presents the bifurcation buckling pressures in both joints under internal pressure. Elastic and elastic-plastic axisymmetric shell finite element analysis was performed involving large deformation in the prebuckling state. Results show that API Standard 650 does not evaluate the frangible roof joint design conservatively in small diameter tanks.

  • The demand of vacuum pump has been increased in the process of semi-conduct manufacturing, as a core component. The response of the system for vacuum pump performance test can be utilized to assess the system and to obtain the reliability of the apparatus for the test. The system consists of gas supply tank, pressure chamber, measurement chamber and transmission line. Transient analysis for compressible fluid has been conducted to evaluate the dynamic characteristic of the volume terminated transmission line. Numerical approach based on the method of characteristics is used for the analysis. The response is evaluated with the important parameters for the system: i.e., length and diameter of the line, volume of the terminal tank. Using the numerical results, pumping speeds are calculated and then compared to the experimental results.

  • This paper is studied on the junction stress of the large tank and the cylindrical outlet such as a pressure vessel attached to a pope or nozzle theoretically. It is assumed that the diameter of tank is much larger than that of the nozzle cylinder, so it can be approximated that nozzle cylinder is attached to plate. As the current nozzle shape is manufactured as "Through Type" to reduce the stress concentration around the nozzle junction part of pressure vessel, a theoretical analysis on the cylinder with finite length should be performed to accomodate this fact. Each theoretical optimal values were obtained through the analysis of stress concentration caused by the variation of cylinder length and thickness, and these results were estimated by performing FEM Analysis. • The HANARO ( High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor) has been operated since 1995. The Cold Neutron (CN) hole was implanted in the reflector tank from the design stage. Before a vacuum chamber and a moderator cell for the cold neutron source are installed into the CN hole, it is necessary to measure exactly the size of the inside diameter and thickness of the CN hole to prevent the interference problem. Due to inaccessibility and high radiation field in the CN hole, a mechanical measurement method is not permitted. The immersed ultrasonic technique is considered as the best way to measure the thickness and the diameter of the CN hole. The 4-Axis manipulator was designed and fabricated for locating the ultrasonic sensors. The transducer of an ultrasonic sensor having 10 MHz frequency leads to high resolution as much as 0.03mm. The inside diameter and thickness of 550 points of the CN hole were measured using 2 channel ultrasonic sensors. The results show that the thickness and inside diameter of the CN hole is in the range of 3.3∼6.7mm and 156∼ 165mm, respectively. This data will be a good reference for the design of the cold neutron source facility.
