  • In a simulated seawater aquaculture system, effects of different operating factors like the superficial air velocity (SAY), hydraulic residence time (HRT), protein concentration and foam overflow height on the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) by a foam fractionator, with 20 cm diameter and 120 cm height, were investigated. This experiment was performed on batch and consecutive modes for different combinations of the tested factors, using synthetic wastewater. In 5 consecutive trials, TSS concentration in culture tank water decreased faster, when the foam fractionator was operated at higher SAV and lower HRT. In batch trials, with increasing SAV, TSS removal rate increased, but decreased with increasing HRT. Higher protein concentration in the bulk solution resulted in higher TSS removal rate. TSS concentration in the collected foam condensates increased but the foam overflow rate decreased with increasing foam overflow height. Foam fractionation was effective for removing TSS in seawater aquaculture systems and its performance largely depended on the operating parameters, especially superficial air velocity.

  • In this paper, a pneumatic device for the deployment performance verification of canards deployed by inertia has been designed and the performance of the pneumatic device has been proven through analysis and tests. The pneumatic conveying process, orifice opening process and piston movement process of the pneumatic device were investigated by using numerical methods. The orifice diameter, pressure in a pressure tank and type of gas were regarded as the main design parameters of the pneumatic device. The error rate between analysis and test results under the same conditions was within 4 %. The accuracy of numerical methods used in this study were validated.

  • A small wastewater collection system for rural area was reviewed and the small diameter gravity (SDG) was thought to be the most appropriate. The pilot-scale field experiment was performed for 15 months and the result is presented. The wastewater used for experiment was the effluent of septic tank in Kon-Kuk University, and components are similar to normal domestic wastewater. The SDG experimental system included 2" PVC pipe and reverse-sloped lower section is included. No clogging problem by solids was experienced at the points where flow direction changed. The pipe-breaking by freezing was experienced during the cold weather, thus proper protection may be required where severe weather is expected.

  • The automobile is made up of about twenty thousand parts. Some parts are formed by pressing and combined by spot welding. Among them, steel palate of fuel tank is formed in the metal mold and bending parts are jointed by spot and seam welding. To find weldability conditions of spot welding, clearance between two welding steel plates was made and after spot welding, weldability is evaluated by means of tensile shear load, nugget size and shape. Specimen used in this study was a mild steel of 1.2mm thickness and electrode was Cu-Cr alloy of 6mm diameter. When spot welding started, the clearance of two steel plates was changed 0mm, 3mm and 5mm step by step. The fractured surface of specimen after this test was observed by Optical Microscope to measure microstructure and nugget shape. When clearance of two specimen was 3mm and 5mm, strength and nugget size was decreased and nugget shape was not clear.

  • The experimental study for the performances of 100 kW marine current turbines (Horizontal Axis Turbine) has been conducted with three cases of 700 mm diameter model in PNU 100 m towing tank. Three cases of impeller have been designed according to the variation of section configuration and tip shape. The model tests have been carried out at different speed of revolution to find out the scale effect (Reynolds number effect). The designed rake impeller was the best among them in the efficiency point of view especially at high Tip Speed Ratio (TSR). The present study is expected to be extended to conduct at high reynolds number as well as the computational study for the validation.

  • Recently, a vessel's maneuvering performance is considered to be an important subject to secure safety at short sea shipping. Especially the high turning performance, which is required to avoid the marine pollution by the ships that was grounded, becomes more severe. In this paper, we discuss the effect of increasing rudder force on turning performance of short sea shipping ship by free running test in towing tank. First of all, we make the 47K PC model ship and high-lift rudder using Coanda effect. And we make the free running test system for the turning test in towing tank. And also we perform the turing test of 47K PC model in several changes of Coanda jet momentum and evaluate the turing performance such as advance and tactical diameter. Finally, we confirm that the increasing of rudder force is very effective to improvement of turning performance of short sea shipping ship.

  • This paper introduces an auto-feeding system to exactly control the feeding time and the amount to cultured fishes in aquaculture industrial field. To reduce expensive costs or labors in this field, it was designed by the concept of controlling feed quantity exactly on the basis of fish's feeding behavior pattern in water tank. A feed control method of this system was developed for controlling feed amount by rotor capacity and motor rotated number. Moreover, a scattering section was selected by rotate way of propeller wing to scatter dried feed to designated site, and then, the diameter of its wing was 250mm and maximum scattering distance was 7.6m for 600rpm. Furthermore, the scattering ways were embodied 2 types such as a simplified way and a multistage shift way looks like a manual scattering. As a results, the multistage shift way is more effective to discharge the dried feed widely than the simple way in the water tank.

  • A 2-way solenoid valve regulates to maintain the pressure of ullage volume of propellant tanks when the command is given by control system for the liquid-propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle. The simulation model of solenoid valve for pressurization is designed with AMESim to verify the designs and evaluate the dynamic characteristics and pneumatic behaviors of valve. To validate a valve simulation model, the simulation results of their operating durations of valve by AMESim analysis are compared with the results of experiments. Using the model, we analyze performance of valve; opening/closing pressure, operating time on various design factors; shape of control valve seat, basic valve seat, rate of sealing diameter. This study will serve as one of reference guides to enhance the developmental efficiency of ventilation-relief valves with the various operating conditions, which shall be used in Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II.

  • We experimentally attempted to understand the vibration characteristics of a flexible pipe excited by vortex shedding. This has been extensively studied in the past decades (For example, see [2-9]). However, there are still areas that need more study. One of them is to study the relation between spatial characteristics of a flow induced vibrating pipe, such as its length, the distribution of wave number, and frequency responses. A non-linear mechanism between the responses of in-line and cross-flow directions is also an area of interests, if the pipe is relatively long so that structural modal density is reasonably high. In order to investigate such areas, two kinds of instrumented pipe were designed. The instrumented pipes, of which the lengths are equally 6m, are wound with rubber and silicon tape in different ways, having different vortex shedding conditions. One has uniform cross-section of diameter of 26. 7mm, and the other has equally spaced by 4 sub-sections, which are composed of different diameters of 75.9, 61.1, 45.6 and 26.7mm. Both pipes are towed in a water tank (200m ${\times}$ 16m ${\times}$ 7m) so that they experienced different vortex shedding excitations. The towing pipe experiments exhibit several valuable features. One of them is that the natural frequencies and their corresponding strain mode shapes dominate the strain response of the uniform pipe. However, for those of non-uniform pipe, the responses are more likely local and many modes participate in it.

  • Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute (MOERI), a branch of KORDI, has designed and manufactured a model of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) named ISiMI(Integrated Submergible for Intelligent Mission Implementation). ISiMI is an AUV platform to satisfy the various needs of experimental test required for development of challenging technologies newly investigated in the field of underwater robot; control and navigational algorithms and software architectures. The main design goal of ISiMI AUV is downsizing which will reduce substantially the operating cost compared to other vehicles previously developed in KORDI such as VORAM or DUSAUV. As a result of design and manufacturing process, ISiMI is implemented to be 1.2m in length, 0.17m in diameter and weigh 20 kg in air. A series of tank test is conducted to verify the basic functions of ISiMI in the Ocean Engineering Basin of MOERI, which includes manual control with R/F link, auto depth, auto heading control and a final approach control for underwater docking. This paper describes the implementation of ISiMI system and the experimental results to verify the function of ISiMi as a test-bed AUV platform.
