Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of convergent nozzle. The objective of the present study is to understand the flow characteristics of the spiral jet, using a computational method. A finite volume scheme is used to solve 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The computational results are validated by the previous experimental data. It is found that the spiral jet is generated by coanda effect at the inlet of the convergent nozzle and its fundamental features are dependent the pressure ratio of the radial flow through the annular slit and the coanda wall curvature.
Stellar kinematics is a useful tool to understand the formation and evolution of young stellar systems. Here, we present a kinematic study of the HII region, NGC 821, using the Gaia Early Data Release 3. NGC 281 contains the open cluster IC 1590. This cluster has a core and a low-stellar density halo. We detect a pattern of cluster expansion from the Gaia proper motion vectors. Most stars radially escaping from the cluster are distributed in the halo. We measure the 1-dimensional velocity dispersion of stars in the core. The velocity dispersion (1 km/s) is comparable to the expected virial velocity dispersion of this cluster, and therefore the core is at a virial state. The core has an initial mass function shallower than that of the halo, which is indicative of mass segregation. However, there is no significant correlation between stellar masses and tangential velocities. This result suggests that the mass segregation has a primordial origin. On the other hand, it has been believed that the formation of young stars in NGC 281 West was triggered by feedback from massive stars in IC 1590. We investigate the ages of stars in the two regions, but the age difference between the two regions is not comparable to the timescale of the passage of an ionization front. Also, the proper motion vectors of the NGC 281 West stars relative to IC 1590 do not show any systematic receding motion from the cluster. Our results suggest that stars in NGC 281 West might have been formed spontaneously. In conclusion, the formation of NGC 281 can be understood in the context of hierarchical star formation model.

The aims of this study are to investigate science high school students' understanding of velocity and acceleration of a simple pendulum bob, and to investigate their understanding of inertia and gravitational force in the motion of a pendulum bob when the tension is removed. For the study, 46 students that had already studied the physical, concepts in simple pendulum were sampled from a science high school in a large city in Korea. For a comparison with general high school students' conceptions, 49 students were sampled from a general high school in the same city. The test tool for the investigation consisted of four drawing and simple-answering type questions developed by the authors. The outcomes of the study revealed that a substantial number of science high school students have misconceptions concerning acceleration in pendulum motion, and that many of them do not understand the relationship between force and acceleration. In addition, the results of the study showed that more than 30% of the students drew the path of a bob going along the tangential direction at the highest point of the motion, and approximately 20% of them drew the path of a bob falling straight down at the lowest point of the motion.

This paper is the fifth investigation on the methods of evaluating flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In previous studies, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation may lead to serious problems. In addition, though the velocity profiles were improved as the measuring position went downstream, the distributions were far from ideal regardless of the valve angle and evaluation position. The eccentricities were also not sufficiently small to disregard the effect on impulse swirl meter (ISM) measurement. Therefore, the effect of these distribution and eccentricity changes according to the positions needs to be analyzed to discuss the method of flow characteristics estimation. In this context, the effects of evaluation position on the steady flow characteristics were studied. For this purpose, the swirl coefficient and swirl ratio were assessed and compared via measurement of the conventional ISM and calculation based on the velocity by particle image velocimetry(PIV) from 1.75B, 1.75 times bore position apart from the cylinder head, to the 6.00B position. The results show that the swirl coefficients by ISM strictly decrease and the curves as a function of the valve lift become smooth and linear as the measuring position goes downstream. However, the values through the calculation based on the PIV are higher at the farther position due to the approach of the tangential velocity profile to ideal. In addition, there exists an offset effect between the velocity distribution and eccentricity in the low valve lift range when the coefficients are estimated based on the swirl center. Finally, the curve of the swirl ratio by ISM and by PIV evaluation as a function the measuring position intersect around 5.00B plane except at $26^{\circ}$ valve angle.

Fall-related injuries are the most common cause of accidental death for the elderly and the most frequent work-related injuries in construction sites. Due to the growing popularity of smartphones, there has been a number of research work related to the use of sensors embedded in the smartphone for fall detection. Falls can be detected easily by measuring the magnitude and direction of acceleration vectors. In general, the direction of the acceleration vector does not show the object movement, but the velocity vector directly indicates the tangential direction in which the object is moving. In this paper, we proposed a new method for computing the fall direction based on the characteristics of the velocity vector extracted from the accelerometer.
As the alternative energy, renewable energy should have been developing by many techniques, in order to substitute the fossil fuel which will be disappeared in the near future. One of the small hydropower generator, main concept of tubular turbine is based on using the different water pressure levels in pipe lines, energy which was initially wasted by using a reducing valve at the end of the pipeline, is collected by turbine in the hydro power generator. A propeller shaped hydro turbine has been used in order to use this renewable pressure energy in order to acquire basic design data of tubular type hydraulic turbine, output power, head, efficiency characteristics due to the guide vane opening angle are examined in detail. First, it ensures the reliance of CFD by that of compared with experiment data. After all, the results of performance characteristics of the CFD and experiment show to confirm the data that power, head and efficiency of less than 4%, 2% and 5% respectively. Moreover influences of pressure, tangential and axial velocity distributions on turbine performance are investigated.

In this study, tool path control algorithm for aspherical surface grinding was derived and discussed. The aspherical surface actually means contact points between lens and tool. Tool positions are generally defined at the center of a tool, so there is difference between tool path and lens surface. The path was obtained from contact angle and relative position from the contact point. The angle could be calculated after differentiating an aspheric equation and complex algebraic operations. The assumption of the control algorithm was that x moves by constant velocity while z velocity varies. X was normal to the radial direction of lens, but z was tangential. The z velocities and accelerations were determined from current error and next position in each step. In the experiment, accuracy of the control algorithm was checked on a micro-precision machine. The result showed that the control error tended to be diminished when the tool diameter increased, and the error was under sub-micro level.
This study represents three-dimensional turbulent flow characteristics around an axial fan measured at the operating point ${\varphi}=0.32$, which is equivalent to the maximum flowrate region, by using three-dimensional fiber-optic type LDA system. This LDA system is composed of a 5 W Argon-ion laser, two optics in back-scatter mode, three BSA's, a PC, and a three-dimensional automatic traversing system. A kind of paraffin fog is used for laser particles in this study. Mean velocity profiles around an axial fan along the downstream radial distance show that the streamwise and the tangential components exist as a predominant velocity and have the maximum value at the radial distance ratio 0.8, while the radial component has a small scale distribution and its flow direction is inward except a part of blade tip. The turbulent intensity profiles show that the radial component exists the most greatly. And also the turbulent kinetic energy shows about 60% as a maximum value at the radial distance ratio 0.9. Moreover, the Reynolds shear stresses do not exist at upstream flow, but the streamwise and the radial components of them show about 20% as a maximum value at the radial distance ratio 0.9 at downstream flow.

A lot study of convection heat transfer on internal flow has been extensively conducted in the past decades using of high specific surface area, increasing heat transfer coefficient, swirling flow and improving the transport properties. This study concerned with the application of a tangential slot swirl generator for improving heat transfer in a horizontal circular copper tube. The Al particles(about $100{\sim}130{\mu}m$) was employed for this experimental work. 3D PIV(particle image velocimetry) technique has employed to measure velocity profiles of Al particles with and without swirl flow. The copper tube is heated uniformly by winding of a heating coil for heat transfer work, having a resistance of 9 ohm per meter. Experiments are performed in the Reynolds number range of 6,800~12,100 with swirl and without swirl using Al particles. Experimental data for comparison of Nusselt number is presented that of with swirl and without swirl along the test tube for the Reynolds numbers. The Nusselt number is improved with increasing of Reynolds numbers or swirl intensities along the test tube. The Nusselt number with swirl flow is about 60.0% to 119.0% higher than that obtained by the Dittus-Boelter equation.

One of the issues that occurs in development of a combustor using Metal Powder as a fuel is an alumina slag processing. A water film formed inside the combustor is expected to be able to solve this issue. The experiments about the formation of a water film were carried out as a preliminary study. As the tangential velocity of water jet is increasing, the angle derivation from horizontal is decreasing for the test model. Results of the experiments showed that the thin water film on the inner surface appeared at the velocity of 10~15 m/s.
