In this paper, we propose an allocation scheme for variable message packings to increase efficiency of military operation using Link-16 which is well-known for tactical data link by delivering imagery information rapidly. We propose a variable message packing scheme using COC waveform to support variable data rate under some coverage limitation. Variety of message packing makes Link-16 vary transmission rate appropriately for tactical environment. We also propose a allocation scheme to assign message packing to time slot properly. Finally we verify the performance and superiority of proposed ideas by simulations.

Link-16 is a widely used TDL (Tactical Data Link) which uses TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access). Link-16 is a very low rate system, so it supports small size of data like tactical message and voice. However, there are related works to transmit situation awareness information like image due to the increasing interest about EBO(Effect-Based Operation), recently. Special TDMA scheduling is needed not static TDMA of Link-16 for image transmission because image data has much larger size than the existing tactical data. In this paper, we proposed Link-16K which enhances the Link-16 MAC. The proposed Link-16K is compatible with Link-16, and includes dynamic TDMA, new packing method, and an efficient retransmission scheme for image transmission effectively. We can see that image transmission delay is reduced and channel utilization is increased through simulation results of proposed idea.

The Tactical Data Link System(TDLS) is a standardized communication link to exchange and interface positional, situational information, command and control in real time. It has been evalua ted that the link would play an important role for tactical interoperability, situation awareness, and execution of joint operations in the future war. But considering the rapidly changing war situations, even though being admitted the necessity of the TDLS of Army helicopter, one of superpowers in the Army, it is not yet built the detailed operational concept. Therefore, this work presents how to embody the TDLS through the systems engineering approach based on the TDLS operating concept analysis of helicopters-ground units.

Positions of tactical objects are represented as Time, Space and Position Information(TSPI) in modeling and simulations(M&S). The format and required information record for TSPI is investigated by referring the TSPI object model of the Test and Training Enabling Architecture(TENA), which has been developed by the United States Department of Defense. The most sophisticated tactical data link, Link-16 has a Precise Participant Location and Information (PPLI) message. We study the data format for exchanging TSPI data based on the PPLI message. To evaluate and track positions of tactical objects, we consider the Kalman filter for linear systems, and the extended Kalman filter and the unscented Kalman filter for nonlinear systems. Based on motion equations of a ballistic missile, the tracking performance for the trajectory of the ballistic missile is simulated by the unscented Kalman filter.

The Systems Interoperability Test and Evaluation System(SITES) is an T&E support tool for both information system and weapon system. The SITES was developed by reference to the Level of Information Systems Interoperability(LISI) in US. We use the tool via MND Broad convergence Network(BCN) in order to assess information system's interoperability. Nowadays, there are many ongoing researches on expanding assessment capability into weapon systems. As part of those research topics, this paper analyze the characteristics of tactical data-link messages which is the way to exchange the information among the weapon systems, and reflect that characteristics in interoperability level assessment.

To ensure interoperability among TADILs, we need inter-operational system of tactical data link that allows sharing of specific, planned information among different TADILs. In this paper, we have proposed the design of a conceptual software architecture of inter-operational system. For developing of a conceptual software architecture, we analyze the actual condition of ADSI used in the US military and identify functions and quality-attributes. Based on these factors, we design the conceptual software architecture for inter-operational system of tactical data link using Attribute-Driven Design(ADD) method. ADD is consist of three phases - choose the module to decompose, refine the module, repeat the steps for every module that needs further decomposition. To evaluate of ADD results, we apply the Software Architecture Analysis Method(SAAM) which is consist of making evaluation scenarios, choosing indirect scenarios, evaluation scenarios' interaction, and creating an overall evaluation. Through the evaluation, we verify the conceptual software architecture of inter-operational system.

With the development of information and communication technology, the military's battle environment is changing greatly to network centric warfare in where weapon system is connected in a network and carries out mission by exchanging the real-time data. The core of the network centric warfare is Tactical Data Link(TDL) system, and subscribers of TDL exchange tactical information in real time through wireline, wireless and satellite network to share the battlefield situation. The amount of data sent and received through TDL inevitably increase as military's weapon systems equipped with TDL systems increase over time and the performance of communications equipment improves. This study proposes ways to improve the transmission speed and processing capacity of the TDL system by improving the Data Link Processor.

Generally, flight information is transmitted by voice signal over legacy UHF radio in ground to air communication system. In this paper, we have implemented the transceiver of TDL(tactical data link) which transmits tactical information, such as flight information, using digital signal. For transmitting digital information over radio path, we have designed data modem that is processing CPFSK modulation, and TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) network for Synchronization among multi user(platform). By simulating aeronautical propagation modeling with the environment of Korea terrain, it is predicted the maximum performance of communication range of the transceiver. As result of the transceiver's aviational boarding test, it is proved that the transceiver of TDL over legacy UHF radio transmits and receives the tactical information in TDMA network within communication range of 160km.

The wireless link of tactical datalink system provides a communication network to share digitalized tactical data in real-time. Also MAC(Multiple Access Control) of this system is subject to TDMA or CSMA according to a operated circumstance of target nodes to exchange the data reliably. In this paper, we verify the operability when we use CSMA scheme based on MIL-STD-188-220 in tactical datalink system which is basically designed with TDMA, and provide a mathematical analysis scheme to verify the operability and performance. Finally, by implementing CSMA scheme to a tactical datalink equipment we obtain practical results which can be compared with theoretical results.

Modern warfare exhibit a NCW (Network Centric Warfare) aspect through quick situation awareness and Command and Control. And Tactical messages operate on various tactical data links (TDLs). For monitoring TDL messages processed by data link processor(DLP), message analysers are generally developed as a component during system development. In addition, in order to forward TDL messages processed by DLP to the message anayzer, the interface messages between DLP and message analysers should be defined interface control document(ICD). We propose the methods using UDP or TCP packets provided by TDL layers that are delivered to DLP without communicating directly with DLP. Depending on TDL message standards and Interface Control Documents(ICDs), we design the message analyzer which communicates with data link processor using internal messages. Using known header field information from the TDL application standard such as JREAP-C, we can quickly filter candidate packets against collected packets and use the full data size information contained in the headers to verify the completed message. Because the methods proposed in this paper do not communicate directly with DLP, the methods proposed in this paper are enable to analyze the TDL application messages such as JREAP-C or Link-K without constraints in existing methods that should be reflected in the system configuration and ICD.
