Pulse Sequence based MR Images for Compressed Sensing Algorithm Applications (펄스열을 이용한 MR 영상의 Compressed Sensing 알고리즘 적용)

  • In recent years, compressed sensing (CS) algorithm has been studied in various research areas including medical imaging. To use the CS algorithm, the signal that is to be reconstructed needs to have the property of sparsity But, most medical images generally don't have this property. One method to overcome this problem is by using sparsifying transform. However, MR imaging, compared to other medical imaging modality, has the unique property that by using appropriate image acquisition pulse sequences, the image contrast can be modified. In this paper, we propose the possibility of applying the CS algorithm with non-sparsifying transform to the pulse sequence modified MR images and improve the reconstruction performance of the CS algorithm by using an appropriate sparsifying transform. We verified the proposed contents by computer simulation using Shepp-Logan phantom and in vivo data.

Scintillation Characteristics of CsI(Li) Single Crystals (CsI(Li) 단결정의 섬광특성)

  • CsI(Li) single crystals doped with 0.02, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mole% lithium as an activator were grown by Czochralski method. The lattice structure of grown CsI(Li) single crystal was bcc, its lattice constant was $4.568\;{\AA}$. The absorption edge of CsI(Li) single crystal was 245 nm, and the spectral range of luminescence was $300{\sim}600\;nm$, its maximum luminescence intensity appeared at 425 nm. The energy resolutions of CsI(Li) single crystal doped with 0.2 mole% lithium were 14.5% for $^{137}Cs$(662 keV), 11.4% for $^{54}Mn$(835 keV) and 17.7% and 7.9% for $^{22}Na$(511 keV and 1275 keV), respectively. The relation formula of $\gamma$-ray energy versus energy resolution was ln (FWHM%) = -0.893lnE + 8.456 and energy calibration formula was ${\log}E_r=1.455\;{\log}(ch.)-1.277$. The phosphorescence decay time of CsI(Li) crystal doped with 0.2 mole% lithium was 0.51 s at room temperature, and its time resolution measured by CFT(constant-fraction timing method) was 9.0 ns.

Development of environmentally friendly inorganic fluorescent pigments, A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11: Crystal structure, optical and color properties (친환경 무기 형광 안료 A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 개발: 결정구조, 광학적 특성 및 착색 특성)

  • To develop the bright-vivid red- and yellow-inorganic fluorescent pigments with high luminescence properties, A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 inorganic pigments were synthesized by a water assisted solid state reaction (WASSR) method and a conventional solid state reaction method. Although impurity peaks corresponding to the AVO3 and AV3O8 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) were observed in all samples prepared, the trigonal structure A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and orthorhombic structure Cs2V4O11 were successfully obtained as a main phase. These inorganic pigments showed the broad absorption band (under 550 nm) originated from CT transitions of VO4 polyhedron, and the strong broad red- and green-emission bands due to 3T21A1 and 3T11A1 transitions of the [VO4]3- group. The A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 pigments showed a bright-vivid red- and yellow-body color, where the a* values of the A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) were +35.5 and +45.9, respectively, and b* value of Cs2V4O11 pigments was +50.3. The L* values of the A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 inorganic pigments were over +45. These results indicate that the A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 inorganic pigments could be an attractive candidate as a bright-vivid red- and yellow inorganic pigments.

Preparation of Water Soluble Chitosan Blendmers and Their Application to Removal of Heavy Metal ions from Wastewater

  • High purity water soluble chitosans (WsCs) were employed as a flocculant to remove heavy metal ions from wastewater of industrial plating wastewater treatment complex. Their weight average molecular weights and polydispersities were 272,000~620,000 g/mol and 1.4~1.9 range, respectively and were readily soluble in water in the pH range of 3~11. Heavy metal ions such as chromium, iron and copper were removed well by WsCs. When WsCs was blended with either sodium N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate trihydrate (SDDC$_{T}$) or sodium salicylate (SSc), the removal efficiency was further increased primarily due to the excess amount of hydrophilic sulfonic and carboxylic groups. Especially, in the case of WsCs-SSc the remaining chromium and copper concentrations were 0.1 mg/L and 9.5 mg/L, which are 1/15 and 1/3 compared with that of pure WsCs, respectively. The former is within the acceptable limit, but the latter is not. Therefore, the effective copper flocculant remains to be studied.d.

Effects of Cordyceps Sinensis and Cordyceps Militaris on Antioxidation in liver of $CCl_4$-treated rats ($CCl_4$ 유도 간 독성에 대한 동충하초의 항산화 효과)

  • Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effects of Cordyceps Sinensis (CS) and Cordyceps Militaris (CM) on anti oxidation in the livers of ${CCl_4}-treated$ rats. Methods : Hepatotoxicity in rats was induced by carbon tetracWoride. $CCl_4-induced$ rats were administered with the extract of CS and CM. Results : In vitro, CS and CM didn't affect levels of lipid peroxide and the activities and type conversion ratio of xanthine oxidase. However, hydroxyl radicals and DPPHL radicals were decreased. In vivo, in the ${CCl_4}-treated$ rats, lipid peroxide, the activities and type conversion ratio of xanthine oxidase and superoxide radicals were increased but superoxide dismutase was decreased. After CS and CM were administered to ${CCl_4}-treated$ rats, levels of lipid peroxide, the activities and type conversion ratio of xanthine oxidase and superoxide radicals were decreased but superoxide dismutase was increased. Conclusions : These results suggest that CS and CM decrease the activities of free-radical-generating enzymes which form lipid peroxide and increase the activities of oxygen free radical scavenging enzymes.

Production and Biological Activity of Laidlomycin, Anti-MRSA/VRE Antibiotic from Streptomyces sp. CS684

  • Culture broth of a streptomycete isolate, Streptomyces sp. CS684 showed antibacterial activity on methicilin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE). Among purified substances from the organism, CSU-1, which is active against MRSA and VRE, is a $C_{37}H_{62}O_{12}Na\;(M^+,721.3875)$, and identified as laidlomycin. The anti-MRSA and anti-VRE activity of CSU-1 was stronger than oxacillin and vancomycin. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain CS684 is very similar to Streptomyces ardus NRRL $2817^T$, whereas the ability of Streptomyces sp. CS684 to produce laidlomycin was shown to be unique.

Differential Response Style on the Personality Assessment Inventory according to Compensation-Seeking Status in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (외상성 뇌손상 환자에서 보상추구 여부에 따른 성격평가질문지 반응 양식의 차이)

  • Objectives : This study examined the characteristics and differences of PAI(Personality Assessment Inventory) profile between compensation-seeking(CS) and treatment-seeking(TS) patients with traumatic brain injury(TBI) and assessed the clinical meaning of the characteristics and differences of profiles between the two groups. Methods : 36 TBI patients who visited the Wonkwang University Hospital were selected. The patients were categorized as compensation-seeking TBI patients(n=22) and treatment-seeking TBI patients(n=14). The PAI scales and subscales were used to compare differences between two groups. t-verification for each variable and comparison analysis were performed. Results:In validity scales, CS group showed significantly higher NIM scores and lower PIM scores than TS groups. In full scales, CS group showed significantly higher SOM, ANX, ARD, DEP, and SCZ scores than TS group. In subscales, CS group showed significantly higher SOM-S, ANX-A, ARD-P, DEP(-C, A, P), (MAN-I), PAR-H, SCZ(-T, P), BOR(-A, N), and ANT-S scores than TS groups. In supplementary scales, CS group showed significantly higher SUI, NON and AGG-P, and lower RXR scores than TS group. Conclusions:There were significant differences in PAI scales with validity scales, some full and subscales according to compensation seeking status in TBI patients. The CS patients tended to exaggerate their symptoms on PAI, and showed higher scores representing somatic preoccupation and emotional distress. These results show the usefulness of PAI in reflecting the significant psychological differences between two groups.

Comparison of Single and Double Combination of Temperature-time in Sous Vide Treated Semitendinosus Muscle from Cattle and Goat

  • This study observed the effects of the double combination of temperatures-times (2 temperatures: 2 times combination, 2T2T) in sous vide cooking method on the physicochemical properties and collagen solubility (CS) of semitendinosus muscle from cattle and goat as a comparison to common sous vide treatment (1 temperature: 1 time combination, 1T1T). The new invention of sous vide cooking method (2T2T) cooked at the first temperature at $45^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, and the second temperature at $60^{\circ}C$, $65^{\circ}C$, and $70^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, and labeled as N45-60, N45-65, and N45-70, respectively. While, common sous vide treatment (1T1T) were cooked directly for 6 h at $60^{\circ}C$ (T60), $65^{\circ}C$ (T65), and $70^{\circ}C$ (T70). Results revealed that cooking with 2T2T treatment improved the water-holding capacity and reduced the cooking loss of both beef and goat meat. The $L^*$ values have no apparent changes between treatment in beef and goat meat, while $a^*$ values of N45-60 treated goat presented markedly higher values than other treatments but an only slight increase in beef at the same treatment (p>0.05). Again, 2T2T treatment tended to decrease mean shear force (SF) values for beef and goat meat with the lowest SF values recorded at N45-60, and the CS no or less influenced this value. Therefore, the application of innovative sous vides cooking method (2T2T) presented comparable values in the treated beef and goat meat as compared to common sous vide method (1T1T).

A Study of the Shirt Design Applied with Traditional Cloud Pattern (전통 운문(雲紋)을 모티브로 한 셔츠디자인 연구)

  • This work is to develop a T-shirt by adopting a unique cloud pattern (a good auspicious sign as design material) from traditional native Korean patterns for application to various cultural products and textile design cloth patterns; subsequently, a T-shirt design was processed based on this. As a research method, computer design programs Adobe Illustrator CS3 and Adobe Photoshop CS3 were used along with a literature examination as part of motive for design development and pattern realization. Three basic motives were selected as a new formative image in this work, utilizing graphical elements such as abridgement and simplicity of pattern, where flower-shaped cloud pattern, uprising cloud pattern, and 卍-shaped or swastika-shaped pattern of traditional cloud patterns were selected. Each motive diverged into two motives via the shape transformation and the application of different colors. The newly developed basic motive was further processed into a combination of one-time repeat pattern, stripe pattern, and application pattern with mixed cloud motives (that were previously developed), which altogether turned out to be 36 pieces of textile design. In addition, with newly developed motive designs and textile designs, a total of 12 shirt designs for 4 pieces were developed for these three each. The shirt design was developed into a shirt blouse, sleeveless T-shirt, half-sleeve T-shirt, and sports T-shirt among others in order to fit various uses and purposes.

Multipath Ghosts in Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging: Challenges and Solutions

  • In through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI), the presence of front and side walls causes multipath propagation, which creates fake targets called multipath ghosts. They populate the scene and reduce the probability of correct target detection, classification, and localization. In modern TWRI, specular multipath exploitation has received considerable attention for reducing the effects of multipath ghosts. However, this exploitation is challenged by the requirements of the reflecting geometry, which is not always available. Currently, the demand for a high radar image resolution dictates the use of a large aperture and wide bandwidth. This results in a large amount of data. To tackle this problem, compressive sensing (CS) is applied to TWRI. With CS, only a fraction of the data are used to produce a high-quality image, provided that the scene is sparse. However, owing to multipath ghosts, the scene sparsity is highly deteriorated; hence, the performance of the CS algorithms is compromised. This paper presents and discusses the adverse effects of multipath ghosts in TWRI. It describes the physical formation of ghosts, their challenges, and existing suppression techniques.
