  • In this paper, we propose a method that extracts features from character patterns using the fractal dimension of chaos theory. The input character pattern image is converted into time-series data. Then, using the modified Henon system suggested in this paper, it determines the last features of the character pattern image after calculating the box-counting dimension, natural measure, information bit, and information (fractal) dimension. Finally, character pattern recognition is performed by statistically finding each information bit that shows the minimum difference compared with a normalized character pattern database.

  • This paper presents the optimal operation scheduling on cogeneration systems connected with auxiliary equipment by using the possibility fuzzy theory. The probability fuzzy theory is a method to obtain the possibility of the solution from the fuzzification of coefficients. Simulation is carried out to obtain the boundary of heat production in each time interval. Simulation results shows effectively the flexible operation boundary to establish operation scheduling.

  • Four types of the phase diagrams indicating the partial miscibilities in polymer-polymer or polymer-solvent systems have been explained in terms of the extended Flory-Huggins lattice theory. In this article, the term $kT_{\chi}$ in the theory is expressed as a function of temperature. Using such $a_{\chi}$-parameter, the simplest forms of geometrical conditions are derived for each type of the four partial miscibilities in polymer systems. The calculated partial miscibilities are in good agreement with the experiment.

  • Irrigation pipeline networks consist mainly of buried pipes and are therefore relatively free from topographic constraints. Installation of irrigation pipeline systems is increasing since the systems have several advantages compared to open channel systems. To achieve economic design of pipeline networks, the layout should meet several conditions such as shortest path, maximum flow, and least cost. Graph theory is mathematical tool which enable to find out optimum layout for complicated network systems. In this study, applicability of graph theory to figure out optimum layout of irrigation pipeline networks was evaluated.

  • There have been several control schemes for the single input systems with unmeasurable state variables using variable structure control(VSC) theory. However, each of them is a study on the systems which can be represented in the phase canonical form or non-phase canonical form dynamic equation separately. As these control algorithms have difficulties in practical application by its theoretical limitations, in this paper we propose a new VSC theory which overcomes those limitations, in this paper we propose a new VSC theory which overcomes those limitations of proposed schemes. This new control scheme can be realized for the general linear systems which have unmeasurable state variables. And the switching function of this VSS algorithm consists of measurable state variable function(reduced-order switching function) and its derivatives. Also in the construction of control imput only measurable state variables are used.

  • In general, solving or analyzing nonilinear dynamical equations is very difficult and requires special techniques. To avoid these difficulties, systems are generally linearized in an attempt to predict their begavior. These linearized equations, however, may not predict true system behavior. Therefore, the nonlinear dynamical analysis using bifurcation theory may become a fundamental framework in understanding nonlinear situation in power systems. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure based on a bifurcation theory to analyze nonlinear behaviors in power systems. We show usefulness of our procedure by applying 3-bus model system. In addition, we consider nonlinear model of SMES and verify the effect of SMES in power system's nonlinear behaviors.

  • The optimal design of structural composite materials is a research topic that attracts the attention of lots researchers. For many more thirty years, there has been increasing interest in the applications in all kinds of topics, which means taking advantage of fuzzy set theory, fuzzy analysis, and fuzzy control for designing high-performance and efficient structural systems is a fundamental concern for engineers, and many applications require the use of a systems approach to combine structural and active control systems. Therefore, an intelligent method can be designed based on the mitigation method, and by establishing the stable of the closed-loop fuzzy mitigation system, the behavior of the closed-loop fuzzy mitigation system can be accurately predicted. In this article, the intelligent algorithm and optimum design of fuzzy theory for structural control has been provided and demonstrated effective and efficient in practical engineering issues.

  • Sufficient conditions for controllability of semilinear second order Volterra integrodifferential systems in Banach spaces are established using the theory of strongly continuous cosine families. The results are obtained by using the Schauder fixed point theorem. An example is provided to illustrate the theory.
