  • Comprehensive bibliographic sources of Plecoptera systematics in Korea and Far East Russia were provided. Systematic status and distributional features of stoneflies in those areas were also discussed. Based on comprehensive type and non-type material examinations in those areas, new synonymies of Sweltsa colorata Zhiltzova and Levanidova, 1978 〔= Sweltsa nikkoensis (Okamoto), 1912〕 and Capnia KUa (Yoon and Aw, 1986)〔=Paracapnia recta Zhiltzova, 1984〕 were established; and the following species were newly recorded from Korea: Taenionema aponicum (Okamoto), Paraleuctra cercia (Okamoto), Leuctra fusca (Linnaeus), Eucapnopsis stigmatica Okamoto, Paracapniarecta Zhiltzova, Nemoura jezoensis (Okamoto), Stavsolus japonicus (Okamoto), Isoperla flavescens Zhiltzova and Potikha, Alloperla joosti Zwick, A. rostellata (Klapalek) Sweltsa nikkoensis (Okamoto), and S. lepnevae Zhiltzova.

  • A hesionid species, Leocratides kimuraorum Jimi, Tanaka and Kajihara, 2017 is newly reported from the sublittoral zones (100 m depth) of the Korean coasts. This species is characterized by lateral antennae as long as the palps, peristomial membrane without papillose, peristomial dorsolateral tubercles with two round marginal lobes, and pharyngeal with terminal papillae. The intra-specific genetic distance among the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) sequences of L. kimuraorum specimens from Japan (type locality) and Korea (this study) was in the range of 0.002-0.005. The inter-specific genetic distance between L. kimuraorum and other hesionid species were 0.166-0.307. The present study is the first record of Leocratides species in Korean fauna. This paper also provides a morphological description and photographs of L. kimuraorum, with partial sequences of the mitochondrial COI based on Korean specimens.

  • The genus Phaedrotoma Foerster, 1862 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Opiinae) parasitize in larvae of flies, Tephritidae, Agromyzidae, Ephydridae, Anthomyiidae, Scathophagidae, and Drosophilidae, of which 12 species are recorded in South Korea. As results of our survey, Phaedrotoma rugulifera Li et al. (2013) and Phaedrotoma vermiculifera Li et al. (2013) are reported for the first time in South Korea. Those specimens were collected by sweeping. Descriptions, and diagnostic illustrations of P. rugulifera and P. vermiculifera are provided.

  • The petiole anatomy of three sections (sects. Calospira, Chamaedryon, and Spiraria) in the genus Spiraea (Rosaceae), which are distributed/cultivated in Korea, was studied and described in details. The vascular bundle system of the distal, medial, and proximal parts of the petiole were studied using LM with the aim of documenting any differences in vascular anatomy. Significant variation of anatomical characters was found in petiole shape (dichotomy, lens or subcircular in outline), presence of two distinct lateral wings, the thickness of epidermis, number of vascular bundles, length of ventral axis, length of dorsiventral axis, width of median vascular bundle, and length of median vascular bundle. All features were compared and we concluded that petiole anatomical characters can be useful for providing diagnostic features to distinguish the studied taxa. A key for identifying the Spiraea taxa in Korea based on their petiole anatomical characters is also provided.

  • During the course of a systematic study of the marine bryozonans in Korean waters, a total of 25 species of the ascophoran bryoaoans were collected, and that the belong to 21 genera and 12 families. Of them, the following nine species new to Korean waters are examined and described with the scanning electron microscope(SEM): Celleporaria wakayamensis, C. brunnea, Rhamphostomella argentea, Calyptotheca symmetrica, Stephanosella biaperta, Microporella discors, Adeonella platalea, A. polymorpha and Phidolopora pacifica.
