  • The accuracy of the 30% and SRSS rules, commonly used to estimate the combined response of structures, and some related issues, are studied. For complex systems and earthquake loading, the principal components give the maximum seismic response. Both rules underestimate the axial load by about 10% and the COV of the underestimation is about 20%. Both rules overestimate the base shear by about 10%. The uncertainty in the estimation is much larger for axial load than for base shear, and, for axial load, it is much larger for inelastic than for elastic behavior. The effect of individual components may be highly correlated, not only for normal components, but also for totally uncorrelated components. The rules are not always inaccurate for large values of correlation coefficients of the individual effects, and small values of such coefficients are not always related to an accurate estimation of the response. Only for perfectly uncorrelated harmonic excitations and elastic analysis of SDOF systems, the individual effects of the components are uncorrelated and the rules accurately estimate the combined response. In the general case, the level of underestimation or overestimation depends on the degree of correlation of the components, the type of structural system, the response parameter, the location of the structural member and the level of structural deformation. The codes should be more specific regarding the application of these rules. If the percentage rule is used for MDOF systems and earthquake loading, at least a value of 45% should be used for the combination factor.

  • Lee[15] examined quantity discount contracts between a manufacturer and a retailer in a stochastic, two-period inventory model where quantity discounts are provided based on the previous order size. During the two periods, the retailer faces stochastic (truncated Poisson distributed) demands and he/she places orders to meet the demands. The manufacturer provides for the retailer a price discount for the second period order if its quantity exceeds the first period order quantity. In this paper we extend the above two-period model to a k-period one (where k < 2) and propose a stochastic nonlinear mixed binary integer program for it. In order to make the program tractable, the nonlinear term involving the sum of truncated Poisson cumulative probability function values over a certain range of demand is approximated by an i-interval piecewise linear function. With the value of i selected and fixed, the piecewise linear function is determined using an evolutionary algorithm where its fitness to the original nonlinear term is maximized. The resulting piecewise linear mixed binary integer program is then transformed to a mixed binary integer linear program. With the k-period model developed, we suggest a solution procedure of receding horizon control style to solve n-period (n < k) order decision problems. We implement Lee's two-period model and the proposed k-period model for the use in receding horizon control style to solve n-period order decision problems, and compare between the two models in terms of the pattern of order quantities and the total profits. Our computational study shows that the proposed model is superior to the two-period model with respect to the total profits, and that order quantities from the proposed model have higher fluctuations over periods.

  • Previous visual analytics researches has focused on reducing the uncertainty of predicted results using a variety of interactive visual data exploration techniques. The main purpose of the interactive search technique is to reduce the quality difference of the predicted results according to the level of the decision maker by understanding the relationship between the variables and choosing the appropriate model to predict the unknown variables. However, it is difficult to create a predictive model which forecast time series data whose overall trends is unknown such as youth physical growth data. In this paper, we pro pose a novel predictive analysis technique to forecast the physical growth value in small pieces of time series data with un certain trends. This model estimates the distribution of data at a particular point in time. We also propose a visual analytics system that minimizes the possible uncertainties in predictive modeling process.

  • The current control for Interior-mounted Permanent Magnet Motor(IPM Motor) is more complicate than Surface-mounted Permanent magnet Motor(SPM Motor) because of its torque characteristic depending on the reluctance. For high performance torque control, it requirs state decoupling between d-axis current and q-axis current dynamics. However the variation of the inductances, which couples the state dynamics of the currents, makes the state decoupling difficult. So some decoupling methods have developed to cope this variation and each current can be regulated independently. This paper proposes a novel approach for fully decoupling the states cross-coupling using sliding mode control with virtual state for IPM Motor. As a result, in spite of the parameter uncertainty and disturbance, the proposed sliding surface can have the dynamics of nominal system controlled by PI controller.

  • The objective of this paper is to present a method for designing robust positioning control systems of a flexible arm using mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ and $\mu$ theory. We begin with a description of the flexible arm based on the model identification method and discuss the derivation of the model uncertainty. The validity of the obtained model is confirmed experimentally. Next, a robust controller is designed based on the mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ and $\mu$ theory by which we can improve robustness of the entire system. On this occasion, we also propose a general plant formation suitable to mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ control and $\mu$-theory. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed design method is verified through experimentation.

  • In this study a 3-component rotating balance, which is designed to measure the thrust (Fz) and two moment components (Mx, My) simultaneously for a rotor test jig, is designed and its performance is validated experimentally. The low voltage signal from the strain gages mounted on the balance is amplified with a rotating amplifier, which is then fed through a slip-ring unit into the data acquisition system. In order to validate the accuracy of the calibration matrix obtained from a static calibration test, an additional reaction type balance is used to measure the thrust from a model rotor simultaneously, and shows very good result. Finally, the expanded uncertainty value, which is obtained from ISO method is estimated to be $2.82\times10^{-1}$, and the balance turns out to be reliable.

  • This paper concerns analysis technique on determining of attitude control gain in the low frequency region using stability area. The stability area is defined by the D-Decomposition method, which was designed by Neimark. In this paper, it is introduced D-Decomposition method from reference paper and design attitude control gain of generic launch vehicle during first stage flight phase. For selecting PD control gain, it is considered the system parameter uncertainty about whole first-stage flight phase, represented the stability area boundary on each case. After deciding the PD control gain using stability area method, it is applied to launch vehicle linear model, and checking the stability margin requirement, frequency response characteristics.

  • The significant advances in information and communication technologies are changing the process of how information is accessed. The internet is a very important source of information and it influences the development of other media. Furthermore, the growth of digital content is a big problem for academic digital libraries, so that similar tools can be applied in this scope to provide users with access to the information. Given the importance of this, we have reviewed and analyzed several proposals that improve the processes of disseminating information in these university digital libraries and that promote access to information of interest. These proposals manage to adapt a user's access to information according to his or her needs and preferences. As seen in the literature one of the techniques with the best results, is the application of recommender systems. These are tools whose objective is to evaluate and filter the vast amount of digital information that is accessible online in order to help users in their processes of accessing information. In particular, we are focused on the analysis of the fuzzy linguistic recommender systems (i.e., recommender systems that use fuzzy linguistic modeling tools to manage the user's preferences and the uncertainty of the system in a qualitative way). Thus, in this work, we analyzed some proposals based on fuzzy linguistic recommender systems to help researchers, students, and teachers access resources of interest and thus, improve and complement the services provided by academic digital libraries.

  • Recently, the importance of efficient resource management has been highlighted due to the uncertainty of its security. Korea has thus made an effort to improve the resource productivity in various fields such as the increase of recycling rate and the establishment of methodical resource management system. It is still necessary to draw the innovative improvement measure of national resource efficiency. This study derives major issues of recycling potential in the domestic industry by analyzing the current status of generation, treatment and recycling of industrial wastes in Korea. Futhermore, main tasks for promoting the improvement of national resource efficiency through the recycling of industrial wastes in Korea have been proposed based on the results of this study with the comparison of Japan's situation.

  • Incident management is significant far the traffic management systems. The management of incidents determines the smoothness of freeway operations. The dynamic nature of incidents and the uncertainty associated with them require solutions based on the incident operator's judgment. Fuzz systems attempt to adapt such human expertise and are designed to replicate the decision making capability of on operator. Fuzzy systems process complex traffic information, and transmit it in a simplified, understandable form to human traffic operators. In this study, fuzzy rules were developed based on data from real incidents on Santa Monica Freeway in LosAngeles. The fuzzy rules ail linguistic based, and hence, user-friendly. A comparison of the results from the linguistic model with the real incident durations indicate that the outputs from the model reliably correspond to real incident durations conditions. The model reliably predicts the freeway incident duration. The modes can thus be used as an effective management tool for freeway incident response systems. The approach could be applied to other problems regarding dispatch systems in transportation.
