  • Joint flexibilities and frictional uncertainties are known to be a major cause of performance degration in motion control systems. This paper investigates the modeling and compensation of these undesired effects. A hybrid controller, which consists of a predictive controller and a neural network controller, is designed to overcome these undesired effects. Also learning scheme for friction uncertainies, which don't interfere with feedback controller dynamics, is discussed. Through simulation works with two inetia-torsional spring system having Coulomb friction, the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid controller was tested. The proposed predictive & neural network hybrid controller shows better performance over one when only predictive controller used.

  • This paper addresses the challenges of dealing with uncertainties based on interval analysis. An interval approach is proposed on the basis of Boundary Selection Method (BSM) for treating systems of linear interval equations in the presence of columnwise dependencies. An iterative procedure is developed for the problem solving where uncertainties are characterized in the form of interval quantities. An applied example is used to illustrate effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach. This new method can be applied for such circumstances that involve finite element analysis of structures, inverse dynamic analysis of mechanisms, and worst case design studies in the presence of the uncertainties.

  • For the accurate calibrations of thermometers at low temperatures, triple points of oxygen and argon have been realized using sealed-type triple point cells. The triple points were realized with both adiabatic and continuous heating methods. The resistance of three capsule-type standard platinum resistance thermometers were measured at the triple points of oxygen, argon, mercury and water for the calibrations of these thermometers in the range from $-220^{\circ}C$ to $0.01^{\circ}C$. The extended uncertainty, with the coverage factor of 2, of the calibration in this range is smaller than 1 mK.

  • In this paper, we have developed a model to determine the input quantity to be processed at each stage of a multi-stage production system in which the yield at each stage may be random and may need reworking at this stage. Yield randomness. especially in a semiconductor industry, is a most challenging problem for production control. The demand for flnal product is uncertain. We have extended the model proposed in Park and Kim[9] to consider a multiple number of reworkings which can be done at any stage prior to or tat the stage whose output in bad, depending on the level of the defect.

  • This paper presents a robust current controller for a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor(SPMSM) by using a PI observer. The decoupling PI(proportional-integral) controller combined with an additional feed-forward compensation has been used for the current controller. The classical feed-forward compensation using velocity information and system parameters is not expected to achieve a robust performance against parameter uncertainties. This paper has adopted a PI observer for the feed-forward compensation to cope with parameter uncertainties without using velocity information. A simple PI observer has been designed to compensate the disturbances that represent velocity coupled terms and parameter uncertainties. Experimental results as well as computer simulations with 630W SPMSM confirm that the proposed approach can deal with the effects of the disturbance and improve the control performance.

  • This paper presents a robust position tracking controller for motor-driven flexible joint manipulators using only the motor angle measurement. The control problem is not easy because the link position is hard to estimate in the presence of parameter uncertainties. The proposed controller consists of a feedback linearization controller (FLC) and two proportional-integral observers (PIOs) that estimate both system states including the link position and an equivalent disturbance for compensating the parameter uncertainties. Comparative computer simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

  • In this article we have presented a unique representation for interval arithmetic. The traditional interval arithmetic is transformed into crisp by symbolic parameterization. Then the proposed interval arithmetic is extended for fuzzy numbers and this fuzzy arithmetic is used as a tool for uncertain finite element method. In general, the fuzzy finite element converts the governing differential equations into fuzzy algebraic equations. Fuzzy algebraic equations either give a fuzzy eigenvalue problem or a fuzzy system of linear equations. The proposed methods have been used to solve a test problem namely heat conduction problem along with fuzzy finite element method to see the efficacy and powerfulness of the methodology. As such a coupled set of fuzzy linear equations are obtained. These coupled fuzzy linear equations have been solved by two techniques such as by fuzzy iteration method and fuzzy eigenvalue method. Obtained results are compared and it has seen that the proposed methods are reliable and may be applicable to other heat conduction problems too.

  • In this paper, a robust attitude control scheme based on Eigenaxis rotation for the spacecraft is proposed. Eigenaxis rotation transforms the attitude of spacecraft to the shortest path and is represented by quaternion. The control law consists of PD-type control part for the nominal system and the robust control part for compensating inertia uncertainty. For the proposed controller, stability analysis is performed and the performance is shown via computer simulation.

  • The Clonal Selection Algorithm (CSA) is an algorithm inspired by the human immune system mechanism. In CSA, several parameters needs to be optimized by large amount of sensitivity analysis for the optimal results. They limit the accuracy of the results due to the uncertainty and subjectivity. Adaptive Clonal Selection (ACS), a modified version of CSA, is developed as an algorithm without controls by pre-defined parameters in terms of selection process and mutation strength. In this paper, we discuss the ACS in detail and present its implementation in construction site utilization planning (CSUP). When applied to a developed model published in research literature, it proves that the ACS are capable of searching the optimal layout of temporary facilities on construction site based on the result of objective function, especially when the parameterization process is considered. Although the ACS still needs some improvements, obtaining a promising result when working on a same case study computed by Genetic Algorithm and Electimze algorithm prove its potential in solving more complex construction optimization problems in the future.

  • The boron content in reactor grade aluminum has been determined by means of a capture gamma-ray counting method. The experimental detection limit is found to be 5.7% ppm with 10% uncertainty. In order to improve the sensitivity, the boron is preconcentrated from aluminum by cation exchange resin system. The accuracies of both methods, i.e., one by the direct measurement and the other by the measurement after preconcentration, are checked by an additive method. The results show good agreements with less than 5% deviation.
