Impacts of Demand Response from Different Sectors on Generation System Well Being

  • Recent concerns about environmental conditions have triggered the growing interest in using green energy resources. These sources of energy, however, bring new challenges mainly due to their uncertainty and intermittency. In order to alleviate the concerns on the penetration of intermittent energy resources, this paper investigates impacts of realizing demand-side potentials. Among different demand-side management programs, this paper considers demand response wherein consumers change their consumption pattern in response to changing prices. The research studies demand response potentials from different load sectors on generation system well-being. Consumers' sensitivity to time-varying prices is captured via self and cross elasticity coefficients. In the calculation of well-being indices, sequential Monte Carlo simulation approach is accompanied with fuzzy logic. Finally, IEEE-RTS is used as the test bed to conduct several simulations and the associated results are thoroughly discussed.

A Design of the Expert System for Diagnosis of Abnormal Gait by using Rule-Based Representation (규칙처리 표현방식을 이용한 이상 보행용 전문가 시스템의 설계)

  • This paper describes a design of the expert system for diagnosis of abnormal gait patients. This system makes the rule-based representation that can easily extend the knowledge-base and naturally represent the uncertainty, and the inference engine that uses forward chaining which covers the reasoning from the first condition to the goal. The results of inferring various maladies using this system are as follows: 1) In cases of progressive muscular dystrophy, cerebral vascular accident, peripheral neuropathic lesion and peroneal nerve injury, the result of inference is the same as that of medical specialists' with 100% accuracy. 2) In cases of Neuritis, Paralysis agitan and Brain tumor, the accuracy of inference is less than 50% compared to that of medical specialists. With above results, we decide that the rule-based representations of some maladies ard accurate relatively, but that the correction and the extention of some rules and some methods of problem solving are required in order to construct the complete expert system for diagnosis of abnormal gait patients.

  • This paper describes a DR construction for land navigation and the sigma point based receding horizon Kalman FIR (SPRHKF) filter for DR/GPS hybrid navigation system. A simple DR construction is adopted to improve the performance both of the pure DR navigation and the DR/GSP hybrid navigation system. In order to overcome the flaws of the EKF, the SPKF is merged with the receding horizon strategy. This filter has several advantages over the EKF, the SPKF, and the RHKF filter. The advantages include the robustness to the system model uncertainty, the initial estimation error, temporary unknown bias, and etc. The computational burden is reduced. Especially, the proposed filter works well even in the case of exiting the unmodeled random walk of the inertial sensors, which can be occurred in the MEMS inertial sensors by temperature variation. Therefore, the SPRHKF filter can provide the navigation information with good quality in the DR/GPS hybrid navigation system for land navigation seamlessly.

  • The magnetic bearing system are intrinsically unstable, and need the feedback control of electromagnetic forces with measured displacements. So the controller design plays an important role in constructing high performance magnetic bearing system. In case of magnetic bearing system, the order of identified model is high because of unknown dynamics included in closed loop systems - such as sensor dynamics, actuator dynamics - and non-linearity of magnetic bearings itself. In this paper the identification and robust control of flexible rotor supported by magnetic bearing are discussed. We measure and identify overall system that contains not only flexible rotor model but also magnetic bearing and time delay. The structured and unstructured uncertainties are modeled that cover variations of natural frequencies, uncertainties in sensor and actuator gains and unmodeled dynamics. And desired performances are specified with several weighting function. Using augmented system that includes identified model, uncertainties, and weighting functions, μ-synthesis is applied to flexible rotor supported with magnetic bearing. The flexible rotor was spin up over the first flexible critical speed.

  • Conventionally, because it is difficult to control a ship in shallow water and because attempting to do so creates unwanted environmental effects, maneuvering ships in the harbor area for berthing is usually done with the assistance of tugboats. In this paper, we propose a new method for berthing ships automatically by using bow and stern thrusters. Specifically, a steering motion model of a ship is considered, and parameters in the equation are evaluated by the system identification technique. An optimal controller based on observations was designed from the linearization of the non-linear ship motion in the horizontal plane. It is used to reduce the uncertainty about the ship's dynamics and reduce measurement requirements. The performance of the controller was also analyzed for its robustness relative to avoiding disturbing the environment due to winds, currents, and wave-drift forces. Experiments were conducted to estimate the potential for identifying result and the design of the controller. Specifically, in this paper, the system modeling and tracking control approach are discussed based on a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) servo-system design.

  • This paper discusses a robust observer-based output-feedback stabilization of an uncertain Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system in a network. In the networked control system, the input delay occurs inevitably and it is expressed by the Markovian stochastic process. To design robust sampled-data observer-based output-feedback controller, we discretize the T-S fuzzy system and represent as a jump system. Stochastic robust stabilization condition is formulated in terms of linear matrix inequalities.

  • For high fuel economy, many kinds of unit in vehicle have been developed. In steering system, as a result, HPS(Hydraulic Power Steering) system has been replaced as EHPS and EPS system. But the structures of these systems are totally different, and that causes the uncertainty of fuel economy evaluation. Therefore we undertake to research to find results and tendency of fuel economy and energy in steering system. For accurate evaluation, we modeled different types of steering systems on same vehicle model. The simulation came into action on various driving cycle. The driving condition is designed to show standby power of pump. Results show differences of fuel efficiency and energy consumption.

  • Shipbuilding is a typical 'build to order' industry. It has a business model that generates revenues from building various ships and offshore products in accordance with owner's requirements at each production stage. Under uncertainty in shipping market, it is very essential for the shipbuilder to prepare the fast and competitive decision for product portfolio strategy in order to maximize contribution margin by exploiting production facilities and constraints. In this study, we introduce the unique decision supporting methodology for the optimal product portfolio sets based on Theory of Constraints(TOC). This methodology is established by adopting the concept of Drum Buffer Rope(DBR) in constraints planning and Throughput Accounting (TA) in management accounting of TOC. In addition, Decision Supporting System(DSS) is implemented. This DSS system provides a throughput estimator with reflecting the cost structure of shipbuilding industry and a resource simulator built on heuristic algorithms to operate major constraint-resources in shipyard such as dock, quay and pre-erection area etc. Several examples are presented to show that the proposed methodology and system can effectively support the strategic decision-making process of a global shipbuilding company.

Development of an automatic measurement system for the AC-DC current transfer difference of the thermal current converter (열전형 전류 변환기의 교류-직류 전류 변환차이 자동측정시스템 개발)

  • We have developed a dual-channel type automatic measurement system to evaluate AC-DC current transfer difference of the thermal current converter(TCC) which is primary standard of AC current. The output drift effect of the TCC is minimized by measuring simultaneously the output voltages of two TCCs using voltmeter. Furthermore, the offset voltage of the voltmeter is cancelled nearly out by taking the average values of two outputs of TCCs measured with the forward-reverse directions using dual channel scanner. The uncertainties of the automatic system were 7 to $86{\mu}A/A$ for 3 mA to 10 A at 40 Hz to 20 kHz, which were evaluated by the comparisons between adjacent range of TCCs and inter-comparison with national measurement institute of Germany(PTB). The capability for ac-dc transfer difference measurement was improved by one order compared with that for the manual ac-dc measurement system.

A Techno-Economic Feasibility Analysis on LVDC Distribution System for Rural Electrification in South Korea

  • Low voltage direct current (LVDC) distribution system is a suitable techno-economic candidate which can create an innovative solution for distribution network development with respect to rural electrification. This research focuses on the use of LVDC distribution system to replace some of KEPCO's existing traditional medium voltage alternating current (MVAC) distribution network for rural electrification in South Korea. Considering the technical and economic risks and benefits involved in such project, a comparative techno-economic analysis on the LVDC and the MVAC distribution networks is conducted using economic assessment method such as the net present value (NPV) on a discounted cash flow (DCF) basis as well as the sensitivity analysis technique. Each would play a role in an economic performance indicator and a measure of uncertainty and risk involved in the project. In this work, a simulation model and a computational tool are concurrently developed and employed to aid the techno-economic analysis, evaluation, and estimation of the various systems efficiency and/or performance.
