  • Last Planner System (LPS) developed by Lean Construction Institute consists of four steps: Master Schedule, Phase Schedule, Lookahead Planning and Weekly Work Plan. This paper focuses on the process of measuring Percent of Plan Completed (PPC) at the weekly Work Plan stage. PPC means the percentage of weekly assignments completed. According to the results of the researches that deal with PPC from many other countries, we can assure the benefits or using PPC. However the concept of PPC is unfamiliar in Korea construction industry. This paper analyzes the cases in which PPC is applied in other countries and compares them with the production control system in Korean construction industry. The results of this research will provide the time management system for using PPC in Korea.

  • This research aimed to investigate the current trends of rooftop greening techniques of frequent use within and without Korea. It is also expected that this research will help developing new rooftop greening techniques appropriate for Korean environment. Data for this study have been collected from patent applications for rooftop greening techniques; the web sites of the Korean Intellectual Property Office as well as patent offices in Germany and Japan, where active researches on rooftop greening techniques are in progress. 168 applications within a period from the year of 1984 to December of 2004 were examined, among which Japan excelled with its 81 applications followed by Germany(54), Korea(31)and USA(2). In case of Japan, where more patent applications were found than in any other countries, applications for Plant Base(38) excelled others - System(36), Management(4) and Plant(3) in the number of applications. As for Germany, 25 cases were on Plant Base, 25 cases on System, and 4 cases on Plant; in Korea, 15 cases were on Plant Base, 11 cases on System, 3 cases on Plant and 2 cases on Management; in USA, 1 cases were on System and 1 cases on Plant. Overall, the total number of patent applications in three countries reaches 168 cases; among which Plant Base topped in all four countries, followed by 73 cases on System. Applications concerning Plant and Management totalled to 11 and 6 for each. In conclusion, most patents were concentrated on Plant Base and System while researches on Plant and Management still do not get as much attention as they deserve. Research and development of various techniques on Plant must be a precondition for the formation of diverse Bio-tops suitable for the environments of specific areas. Concrete researches on rooftop greening techniques will contribute to the improvement of urban ecosystem by developing more convenient and easily applicable techniques during the time of actual construction.

  • The role of SVL (Sheath voltage limiter) in cable system is to protect the PVC(or PE) jacket in case of transient overvoltage resulting from lightning and other causes. But, in Korea, there is so many SVL failure cases resulting from power frequency overvoltage. So, the paper investigates the phenomenon of failure SVL comparing with other countries' system. Finally, the installation of ECC(Earth Connectivity Conductor) in under ground cable system is presented to remove the possibilities of SVL thermal runaway due to the power frequency overvoltage.

  • This study was conducted to build frameworks for a guideline of community forest projects with respect to ODA of Korea (Official Development Assistant) in forest fields. Community forestry is a worldwide phenomenon which began in developing countries such as Nepal, Gambia, Guinea, and Indonesia and has been gradually recognized as an effective measure for ODA in forestry areas from ODA/DAC countries and the other international donors. This study investigated types of community forest status, mechanisms of community forest project conducted by ODA/DAC countries or the other international donors, and CFM (Community Forest management) success factors. As a result of our study, there are different types of resource users, having different economic and social status, perspectives, knowledge systems, values, understandings and objectives in community based forestry. Consequently, the clear forest tenure systems enabling communities to get motivated for the projects, the most appropriate agroforestry systems in different countries, capability of community to manage forest and etc must be considered carefully when the community forest project are implemented for ODA of Korea in order to gain successful results from ODA in forestry fields.

  • After 'Zhou Chuchu (走出去, Go global)' in the early 2000s, and with the 'One-to-One Road' initiative in 2012, China's Overseas Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) has increased significantly, resulting in high academic interest. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of national risks of home country on China's OFDI by using data from 49 countries along the 'One-to-One Road' between 2007 and 2018, and to compare the factors of national risks that attract investment from the world. As a result of the study, market economy companies' perceptions of national risks are mostly negative, so risk acts as a deterrent to investment. On the other hand, national risks of home countries have had positive effects on China's OFDI, which would mean that Chinese investors, mostly state-owned enterprises have a high tendency to invest in regions or countries with high national risks. Other economic factors, such as the size of the investment partner country's market, GNI per capita, and trade openness, had a positive (+) effect, and natural resources had a negative (-) effect on China's OFDI. As dummy variables, FTA, which is an economic and diplomatic factor, SCO, which is a political and diplomatic factor, and bordering which is a geographical factor, were also found to have a positive (+) effect. This study implies the investment pattern of China's OFDI is due to the characteristics of China's unique geopolitical and economic system, and it is judged to be influenced by political and strategic factors, especially the aspects led by state-owned enterprises.

  • This study was done to investigate the independent organizations established for patient safety, related policies, and the duties of experts in other countries. Australia established an organization called the Commission in 2006, the United Kingdom established the National Patients Safety Agency in 2001, and the United States assigned its work to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in 2005. This was done by law in all three countries. The experts for patient safety were mainly called the "patent safety and quality coordinator", and although there was no qualification system for carrying out patient safety work, all three countries had licenses in the health care field or required more than 4-5 years of practical experience. The main duties were planning on patient safety and quality of healthcare service, data collection and analysis, and education, etc. and for this, competencies such as communication, leadership, and teamwork were required.

  • Scientists and engineers without borders (SEWB) was established on 2009 as the NGO having specialist groups to support the underprivileged in developing countries living in the isolated area and having water and sanitation problems. After the SDGs were suggested by the UN on 2016, activities are globally conducted by the nation, NGO and etc. to improve health and education of the underprivileged in developing countries. SEWB also have been conducted the projects in Korea and developing countries to reduce the gap of the infrastructure between the developed and developing countries and to help sustainable development in the developing countries by providing appropriate technology. In Korea, SEWB have been held international conference on appropriate technology (ICAT), lectures, and competitions for specialists and students. In developing countries including Cambodia and other 5 countries, SEWB have been provided water packages funded by iCOOP KOREA and volunteer opportunities. Since 2019, 'SEWB sustainable village development project' have been conducted in Bot Veng village, Cambodia to improve infrastructures on water, electricity, transportation, and agriculture by using desalination system, Solar Cow system, strengthened wooden bridge, and poultry farm, respectively. The developed solution for developing countries from SEWB could contribute to eliminate the water shortage and poverty.

  • Many countries in Asia have been researching for linking and activation of Asia transverse railway and we are trying to link Trans-Korean railway and Transcontinental railway. However we are confronted with a difficult question that the railway system of each country is different from each other-gauge, track formation and signal system. These problems will obstruct prior occupation of market because of loss of time and cost for trans vehicles and transshipment. In this paper, we tried to setting up development direction of Korean variable gauge vehicles by examine international development direction of variable gauge vehicles.
