Biosorption of Hg(II) ions from synthetic wastewater using a novel biocarbon technology

  • Mercury is a toxic pollutants present in different types of industrial effluents and is responsible for environmental pollution. Removal of Hg(II) ions from synthetic wastewater was studied using the activated biocarbon produced from the leaves of Tridax procumbens (Asteraceae). The particle size of the biocarbon (BC) is in the range of $100-120{\mu}m$. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, pH, contact time, and amount of biocarbon on the biosorption process were studied at temperature of $28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Batch experimental studies showed that an equilibrium time of 160 min was required for the maximum removal of Hg(II) at the optimized biocarbon dose of 2.5 g per 100 mL of synthetic wastewater. The optimum pH required for maximum removal (96.5%) of Hg(II) ions was found to be 5.5. The biosorption of metal ions onto activated biocarbon surface is probably via an ion exchange mechanism. The biocarbon can be regenerated with minimum loss. Further, it can be reused without any chemical activation. The findings of the research suggested that, the biocarbon produced from cost effective renewable resources can be utilized for the treatment of industrial wastewater.

졸-겔법에 의한 $TiO_2$ 분체 합성 및 주방용 합성세제의 광분해 효과 (Preparation of $TiO_2$ Powder by Sol-Gel Method and Their Photocatalytic Decomposition Effect of Synthetic Detergents for Kitchen Use)

  • An aqueous solution of a commercial liquid synthetic detergent for kitchen use was photodecomposed in the presence of titanium dioxides powder under an atmosphere of air at room temperature. Titanium dioxides were prepared by sol-gel method from titanium iso-propoxide at different R ratio($H_2O$/titanium iso-propoxide) and calcined at $500^{\circ}C$. All titanium dioxides were characterized by XRD, BET surface area analyzer and UV-VIS spectrometer. The surface area of titanium dioxides prepared at R ratio=6 appeared higher volume about 20% than commercial $TiO_2$ catalysts. XRD patterns of titania particles were observed mixing phase together with rutile and anatase type. Titanium dioxides prepared by sol-gel method show higher activity about 6% than commercial $TiO_2$ catalysts on the photocatalytic degradation of a commercial liquid synthetic detergent for kitchen. The concentration of the detergent decreased to about 90% of its initial value at illumination times of 2 hour. Illumination for 30 minutes decreased the concentration of oxygen to about one-fifth of the initial value.

Effect of $Al_2O_3/Fe$ Ratio on Characteristics of Carbon Nanotubes Prepared by Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition

  • The effect of compositions of $Al_2O_3$ in the mixed $Fe/Al_2O_3$ catalysts on the synthetic behaviors of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) process was investigated in wide range of the mixture ratios of support materials. CNTs were synthesized with $Fe/Al_2O_3$ catalysis under the condition of 40 min in synthetic time, and 923 K of synthetic temperature using $C_2H_4$ and $H_2$ as synthetic and carrier gas, respectively. The carbon yield with the content of $Al_2O_3$ showed in a parabolic curve and the maximum carbon yield was 40 wt.% of $Al_2O_3$. As the mixture ratio of $Al_2O_3$ increased, decreasing tendency was observed in the diameter of CNTs. Specific surface areas of CNTs were increased with the increase of the mixture ratio of $Al_2O_3$.

Magnetoresistive and Pinning Direction Behaviors of Synthetic Spin Valves with Different Pinning Layer Thickness

  • The pinning direction, the spin flop behaviors and the magnetoresistive properties in top synthetic spin valve structure [NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe (t$_{p2}$)/Ru/CoFe (t$_{p1}$)/IrMn] were investigated. The magnetoresistive and pinning characteristics of synthetic spin valves strongly depended on the differences in the two pinning layer thickness, ${\Delta}t(=t_{p2}-t_{p1})$. In contrast to the conventional spin valves, the pinning direction (P1) was canted off with respect to the growth field axis with ${\Delta}t$. We found that the canting angle ${\Phi}$ had different values according to the annealing field direction and ${\Delta}t$. When the samples were annealed at above the blocking temperature of IrMn with zero fields, the canted pinned layer could be set along the growth field axis. Because the easy axis which was induced by the growth field during deposition is still active in all ferromagnetic layers except the IrMn at $250{^{\circ}C}$, the pinning direction could be aligned along the growth field axis, even in 0 field annealing.

실리카 입자를 활용한 친환경 인조스웨이드의 견뢰도 향상에 관한 연구 (Study on the Improvement of the Fastness of Dyeing for Environmentally Synthetic Suede Using Silica Particles)

  • In recent years, research on the development of eco-friendly synthetic suede based on water-dispersed polyurethane resin and non-fluorine water repellent has been conducted. Synthetic suede has a problem that the fastness to dyeing is greatly lowered after the water-repellent processing at a high temperature of $160^{\circ}C$ because the polyester is dyed with a disperse dye. Therefore, in this study, silica was added to water-dispersed polyurethane resin to improve dye fastness. To distribute the $PUD-SiO_2$ mixture evenly in the water-dispersed polyurethane resin, sufficient stirring was done for a period of time. When the $PUD-SiO_2$ mixture(PUD 1-5%) is applied to the substrate, it is confirmed through SEM that the mixture is uniformly applied without particle condensation. The results showed that silica with a diameter of 4~12nm and BET of $200{\sim}380g/m^2$ had the ability to improve dispersibility and fastness.

폐전선으로부터 유가자원 회수를 위한 저온열분해(II) (Low Temperature Pyrolysis for the Recovery of Value-added Resources from Waste Wire (II))

  • 본 연구의 목표는 열분해 기술의 문제점을 보완하여 유가자원의 회수와 폐기물 처리의 효율을 높이는데 있다. 우선 경제성을 높이기 위해 기존 열분해온도(보통 $500{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$)보다 낮은 $450^{\circ}C$에서의 저온열분해 반응을 시도하였다. 촉매를 사용하여 반응온도와 반응시간을 단축할 수 있었고, 무 산소 상태를 유지시키는데 유리하도록 간접열을 사용하였다. 결과적으로 유가자원인 구리와 합성연료유의 회수율을 증가시킬 수 있었고, 발생하는 부산물과 배가스의 처리효과가 뛰어남을 알 수 있었다. 배가스는 2단의 중화조를 통과시켜 다이옥신은 거의 발생되지 않았으며, 나머지 대기환경기준의 측정항목 또한 기준치 이하를 보였다. 이번 연구에서는 앞에서 말한 저온 열분해장치(GTPK-001)를 제작하였고, 경제적으로나 친환경적으로 상용화 개발이 가능함을 알 수 있었다.

대형 컨테이너 선박의 합성수지계열 RAILKO BUSH 적용 연구 (The Study of Synthetic Material Bush (Railko Bush) Application on Large Container Vessel)

  • Recently, the synthetic material stern tube bush has been applied by ship owner's requirement because the synthetic material has a merit. That is to say, when stern tube seal is damaged and sea water comes into stern tube, it can work without problem because of water lubricating property. However, the material also has a demerit of temperature rise problem when some factors meets on synthetic material, for example, not sufficient lubrication oil supply and not proper shaft alignment and so on. As known in the world, the RAILKO bush is rampant for synthetic material by some ship owner because of the above mentioned reason. However, the bush has several accidents on large container vessel. Unfortunately or fortunately our yard has a chance to apply the RAILKO bush owing to requirement of specific ship owner. Therefore, it is much more required to approach the accurate shaft alignment analysis. In line with this reason, we had a shaft alignment calculation considering hull deformation and hull flexibility (hull stiffness). Also, in the calculation, we had considered dynamic condition which is reflected he propeller thrust forces and moments and oil film stiffness on the shaft alignment calculation. According to he shaft alignment calculation, bearing slope was applied on the tern tube bush and was measured. The RAILKO bush should be applied the running in procedure according to maker's recommendation for performing the oil film on the bush surface. Finally, the vessels were delivered successfully without any problem with AILKO bush as shown on his paper.

평판형 막모듈을 이용한 합성염료 폐수처리에 있어서 염농도 및 온도의 영향 (Effect of Salt Concentration and Temperature in Synthetic Dyestuff Wastewater Treatment using Plate and Frame Membrane Module)

  • Nanofiltration[NF45] and reverse osmosis membrane(HR98PP) separation treatment of dyestuff wastewater was carried out In order to separate relatively pure water from synthetic dyestuff wastewater, which consists of reactive dye, acid dye, basic dye, direct dye, and disperse dye. The experiments were performed by using the plate and frame membrane module. In the nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membrane separation, When the NaCl concentration was 0.1, 5.0, and 20.091, retention was 63.0, 46.0, 0.9%, respectively. When permeate flux was 125.0, 67.5, and 45.0 L/$m^2$ h, the osmotic pressure increased with Increasing the NaCl concentration. Permeate flux of two membranes Increased as temperature Increased due to segmental movement of polymer of the membrane and the rejection rate of dyestuff was decreased gradually. It was found that the rejection rate was about 95% in the nanofiltratlon, while the reverse osmosis membrane showed a high rejection rate of 99% under all temperature and pressures conditions.

유리질 암석으로부터 제올라이트 합성에 관한 연구(Ⅱ) : 알칼리 용액에서 진주암의 용해 거동과 제올라이트의 합성 (Synthetic Study of Zeolites from Some Glassy Rocks (II) : Dissolution Behavior of Perlite and Zeolite Synthesis in Alkaline Aqueous Solution)

  • 화산 유리질 암석인 진주암을 대상으로 60-150${\circ}C$의 온도 범위에서 다양한 농도의 알칼리 용액으로 수열 처리하므로서, 유리질 성분의 변질 양상 및 제올라이트의 합성 과정을 폐쇄계의 조건에서 연구하였다. 진주암을 속성 기원 제올라이트의 생성 환경에 해당되는 80${\circ}C$ 및 pH=8-12의 조건에서 100일간 처리하여도, 양간의 단순 용해 양상이 인지될 뿐 제올라이트는 합성되지 않았다. 여기서 처리 용액의 pH가 증가함에 따라, Si과 Al의 농도는 점진적으로 증가되지만 Si/Al의 농도비는 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 진주암을 0.1M 이상의 NaOH 용액으로 수열 처리하여 Na-P, 아날심, 체바자이트, Na-X와 같은 제올라이트를 합성하였다. 대개 100${\circ}C$를 경계로 60-100${\circ}C$의 온도 범위에서 Na-P, 그리고 100-150${\circ}C$에서 아날심이 주로 합성되었다. Na-P의 합성 과정에서 시료에 대한 용액의 혼합 조성비가 낮은 경우(<10ml/g)에 체바자이트, 그리고 처리 용액의 NaOH 농도가 높을 경우 (>3M)에 Na-X가 Na-P에 수반되어 생성되는 양상을 볼 수 있다. 제올라이트 합성 과정에 있어서 진주암질 유리의 알칼리 용액에 의한 변질은 화산 유리의 속성 변질에 의한 천연 제올라이트 생성 과정과 같은 용해${\cdot}$변질 반응(incongruent dissolution)의 형식으로 진행되는 것으로 해석된다. 그러나 반응 속도론적인 측면에서 보면, 이 실험으로부터 도출된 제올라이트의 합성 조건들은 화산 유리의 속성 변질에 의한 천연 제올라이트 생성 조건의 해석에 직접 적용될 수 없을 것으로 생각된다.
