  • This research was carried out to evaluate the effect of process variables on mechanical properties of the wood fiber-thermoplastic fiber composites by turbulent air mixing method. The turbulent air mixer used in this experiment was specially designed in order to mix wood fiber and thermoplastic polypropylene or nylon 6 fiber, and was highly efficient in the mixing of relatively short plastic fiber and wood fiber in a short time without any trouble. The adequate hot - pressing temperature and time in our experimental condition were $190^{\circ}C$ and 9 minutes in 90% wood fiber - 10% polypropylene fiber composite and $220^{\circ}C$ and 9 minutes in 90% wood fiber 10% nylon 6 fiber composite. Both in the wood fiber - polypropylene fiber composite and wood fiber- nylon 6 fiber composite, the mechanical properties improved with the increase of density. Statistically, the density of composite appeared to function as the most significant factor in mechanical properties. Within the 5~15% composition ratios of polypropylene or nylon 6 fiber to wood fiber, the composition ratio showed no significant effect on the mechanical properties. Bending and tensile strength of composite, however, slightly increased with the increase of synthetic fiber content. The increase of mat moisture content showed no significant improvement of mechanical properties both in wood fiber - polypropylene fiber composite and wood fiber nylon 6 fiber composite. Wood fiber - nylon 6 fiber composite was superior in th mechanical strength to wood fiber-polypropylene fiber composite, which may be related to higher melt flow index of nylon 6 fiber(22g/10min) than of polypropylene fiber(4.3g/10min).

  • An extracellular protease of Salmonella schottmulleri was purified from culture filtrate by using 0-75% ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow ion exchange chromatography, Ultrogel HA chromatography and Sephacryl S-200 HR molecular sieve chromatography. To measure enzyme activity, synthetic dipeptide substrate (CBZ-arg-arg-AFC) with low molecular weight was employed as substrate. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was approximately 80 kDa when determined by gel filtration on Sephacryl S-200 HR and 73 kDa when estimated by SDS-PAGE. The isoelectric point was 5.45. The activity of the purified enzyme was inhibited by metal chelating agesnts such as EDTA and 1.10-phenanthroline. The divalent cations, such as Ca$\^$2+/, Zn$\^$2+/, Fe$\^$2+/, Mg$\^$2+/ enhanced its activity. These results suggested that it was a metalloprotease. It had a narrow pH optimum of 6.5-7.5 with a maximum at pH 7.0 and a temperature optimum of 40.deg.C. It was stable at least for 1 week at 40.deg.C and maintained its activity for 24 hours at 50.deg.C, but it was rapidly inactivated at 65.deg.C. This protease was shown to be sensitive to sodium 50.deg.C, but it was rapidly inactivated at 65.deg.C. This protease was shown to be sensitive to sodium 50.deg.C, but it was rapidly inactivated at 65.deg.C. This protease was shown to be sensitive to sodium 50.deg.C, but it was rapidly inactivated at 65.deg.C. This protease was shown to be sensitive to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and was inactivated in a dose-dependent manner. However, it was resistant to Triton X-100 and the activity was enhanced to 32.3% with treatment of 0.025% Triton X-100.

  • Interests in creating three-dimensionally designed fabric materials are growing rapidly in the sectors of the fashionable textiles with the creativity, new functions, and aesthetics. A number of finishing methods have been developed and proposed to add or create new functions and designs for silk fabrics. Due to the strong hydrogen bonds between the molecules of silk fibroins, the thermal treatment methods used in thermoplastic fiber processing, which can easily deform the synthetic filament fabrics to endow three-dimensional appearance to the fabrics, are not applicable to the silk fabric treatment. In order to modify the fine structure of silk fiber, neutral salt solution treatment methods have been suggested. In this study, the effect of the calcium nitrate solution on the physical and mechanical properties of silk fabrics was investigated by using the KES(Kawabata Evaluation System) equipment. Based on these findings, relationships between parameters, for example, the thickness and the compressional energy, the thickness and the compressional linearity, and the air permeability and the pore area statistical analysis were investigated. The relationships between the process parameters such as treatment temperature/time and the resulting fabric property parameters were also analyzed by using several SAS procedures.

  • In this article, novel olefin polymerization catalyst with lower cost and simple synthetic process were developed, $ArOTiCl_3$ complexes [$(2-OMeC_6H_4O)TiCl_3(C1)$, $(2,4-Me_2C_6H_3O)TiCl_3(C2)$, $TiCl_3(1,4-OC_6H_4O)TiCl_3(C3)$, $TiCl_3(1,4-OC_6H_2O-Me_2-2,5)$ $TiCl_3(C4)$] and corresponding $(ArO)_2TiCl_2$ complexes [$TiCl_2(OC_6H_4-OMe-2)_2(C5)$ and $TiCl_2(OC_6H_3-Me_2-2,6)_2(C6)$] have been synthesized by the reaction of $TiCl_4$ with phenol, all these complexes were well characterized with $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, MASS and EA. When combined with methylaluminoxane (MAO), the $ArOTiCl_3/MAO$ system shows high activity for ethylene copolymerization with 1-octene and copolymer was obtained with broaden molecular weight distribution (MWD). The $^{13}C$ NMR result of polymer indicates that the 1-octene incorporation in polymer reached up to 8.29 mol%. The effects of polymerization temperature, concentration of polymerization monomer and polymerization time on the catalytic activity have been investigated.

  • An artificial zeolite was synthesized from bituminous coal fly ash by thermo-alkali treatment, $100{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ and 3.5 N NaOH solution for 24 hours, to develope new useful material in waste water treatment system. The artificial zeolite had much higher cation exchange capacity, $299cmol^+\;kg^{-1}$ and lower concentration of extractable heavy metals than bituminous coal fly ash. The higher the temperature and the longer the shaking time, the more Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb were sorbed chemically by the artificial zeolite. Shaking artificial zeolite and wastewater at $35^{\circ}C$ for 9 hours, the amount of sorbed heavy metals were $123.5g\;kg^{-1}$ for Zn, $164.7g\;kg^{-1}$ for Cu, $184.4g\;kg^{-1}$ for Cd and $350.6g\;kg^{-1}$ for Pb, respectively.

  • The adsorption properties of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions were evaluated by using a polysulfone scoria zeolite (PSf-SZ) composite with synthetic zeolite synthesized from Jeju volcanic rocks (scoria). In order to investigate the adsorption properties, various parameters, such as pH, contact time, reaction rate, concentration, and temperature in aqueous solutions, were evaluated by tests carried out in batch experiments. The adsorption capacities of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions increased between pH 2 but achieved equilibrium at pH 4 and above. The adsorption rate increased rapidly up to the initial 24 h, after which it plateaued ; the adsorption rate then sustained at equilibrium from 48 h. The adsorption kinetics of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions were described better by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The Langmuir model fitted the adsorption isotherm data better than the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacities of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions obtained from the Langmuir model were 53.8 mg/g and 84.7 mg/g, respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions on PSf-SZ was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic reaction.

  • In this study, we tried to fabricate self - healing microcapsules using liquid inorganic materials which can be mixed directly with cement composites. The basic properties of the liquid inorganic material were evaluated and microencapsulation was performed. The focus of this paper is on the quality and manufacturing characteristics of cement composites rather than the healing effects of self - healing microcapsules according to mixed capsules. Test results, the self-healing microcapsules encapsulate liquid inorganic material which is stable at room temperature and has high crack followability, and the yield is over 90%. The size of self - healing microcapsule was able to change according to the synthetic agitation speed and it was able to secure more than 70% of target size. In addition, the loss of less than 10% was found to occur through the membrane strengthening of self - healing microcapsules, and it could be reduced by 50% compared with the case without membrane strengthening.

  • A fungal strain, designated PTT-2, was isolated from the bark of the trunk of a persimmon (Diospyros kaki) tree in Cheongdo, Korea. The isolate showed morphological similarities with Leptosphaerulina saccharicola. Strain PTT-2 had more rapid growth on potato dextrose agar medium than on oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, and synthetic nutrient poor agar media, with colony sizes of 53.8 mm, 49.8 mm, 48.4 mm, and 28.1 mm after 7 days at $25^{\circ}C$ temperature, respectively. Strain PTT-2 produced ascospores, which had irregular wavy edges, oblong to ellipsoidal shape, hyaline appearance and $23.6{\times}10{\mu}m$ size. The black ascomata were developed on PDA medium, and asci were recorded. A BLAST search of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, TEF1-${\alpha}$ and RPB2 gene sequences revealed that strain PTT-2 showed more than 99% nucleotide similarity with a strain of Leptosphaerulina saccharicola previously reported from Thailand. A neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree was constructed by concatenating the above-mentioned sequences, and showed that strain PTT-2 clustered in the same clade with L. saccharicola. Based on these findings, this is the first record of Leptosphaerulina saccharicola occurring in Korea.

  • Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-modified bentonite (EMB) was used for adsorption of zinc ion (Zn) from aqueous solution, compared with unmodified bentonite (UB). Parameters such as dose (0.750 ~ 3.125 g/L), mixing intensity (10 ~ 150 rpm), contact time (0.17 ~ 30 min), pH (2 ~ 7), and temperature (298 ~ 338 K), were studied. Zn removal efficiency for EMB was 20 ~ 30 % higher, than that for UB, in all experiments. Thermodynamic studies demonstrated that adsorption process was spontaneous with Gibb's free energy (${\Delta}G$) values, ranging between -5.211 and -7.175 kJ/mol for EMB, and -0.984 and -2.059 kJ/mol for UB, and endothermic with enthalpy (${\Delta}H$) value of 9.418 kJ/mol for EMB and 7.022 kJ/mol for UB. Adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo-second order kinetics model, and its rate constant was 3.41 for EMB and $2.00g/mg{\cdot}min$ for UB. Adsorption equilibrium data for EMB were best represented by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and calculated maximum adsorption capacity was 2.768 mg/g. It was found that the best conditions for Zn removal of EMB within the range of operation used, were 3.125 g/L dose, 90 rpm intensity, 10 min contact time, pH 4, and 338 K. Therefore, EMB has good potential for adsorption of Zn.

  • This work examined the effect of mixing transition metal-based additives [FeCl3, Fe-containing paper mill sludge (PMS), CoCl2·H2O, ZrO2, and α-Fe2O3] on the thermochemical conversion of coffee waste (CW) in carbon dioxide-assisted pyrolysis process. Compared to the generation amounts of syngas (0.7 mole% H2 & 3.0 mole% CO) at 700℃ from single pyrolysis of CW, co-pyrolysis in the presence of Fe- or Zr-based additives resulted in the enhanced production of syngas, with the measured concentrations of H2 and CO ranging 1.1-3.4 mole% and 4.6-13.2 mole% at the same temperature, respectively. In addition, α-Fe2O3 biochar possessed the adsorption capacity of As(V) (19.3 mg g-1) comparable to that of ZrO2-biochar (21.2 mg g-1). In conclusion, solid-type Fe-based additive can be highly considered as an efficient catalyst to simultaneously produce syngas (H2 & CO) as fuel energy resource and metal-biochar as sorbent.
