  • Artesunate, a semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin, is used primarily as a treatment for malaria. Its effects on the central nervous system, general behavior, and cardiovascular, respiratory, and other organ systems were studied using mice, rats, guinea pigs, and dogs. Artesunate was administered orally to mice at doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg and to rats and guinea pigs at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg. In dogs, test drugs were administered orally in gelatin capsules at doses of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg. Artesunate induced insignificant changes in general pharmacological studies, including general behavior, motor coordination, body temperature, analgesia, convulsion modulation, blood pressure, heart rate (HR), and electrocardiogram (ECG) in dogs in vivo; respiration in guinea pigs; and gut motility or direct effects on isolated guinea pig ileum, contractile responses, and renal function. On the other hand, artesunate decreased the HR and coronary flow rate (CFR) in the rat in vitro; however, the extent of the changes was small and they were not confirmed in in vivo studies in the dog. Artesunate increased hexobarbital-induced sleeping time in a dose-related manner. Artesunate induced dose-related decreases in the volume of gastric secretions and the total acidity of gastric contents, and induced increases in pH at a dose of 400 mg/kg. However, all of these changes were observed at doses much greater than clinical therapeutic doses (2.4 mg/kg in humans, when used as an anti-malarial). Thus, it can be concluded that artesunate is safe at clinical therapeutic doses.

  • The development of natural food preservatives instead of chemical synthetic food preservatives is world wide inte-rest. Authors already investigated that cinnamon bark extract revealed antimicrobial activity against general spoilage microorganisms of food especially its acitivity was stronger against molds than against bacteria. In this paper, authors examined the mirobial flora from the spoiled fish meat paste products and also checked the possibility of cinnamon bark extract food preservative for prolong the shelf life of the fish paste product and breads. The predominat bacteria was Bacillus sp. as about 98% of the total microorganisms isolated from unpacked or packed spoiled fish meat paste products. While molds and yeast are not detected from the vacuum packed products. The MIC(minimum inhibitory concentration) of cinnamon bark extract against the isolated spoilage bacteria and molds was 160~640$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ and 40~80$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, respectively. When the diluted cinnamon bark extract (the extract : ethanol=1 : 3) was sprayed on the surface of fried fish meat paste product, molds growth was delayed by 2 days at room temperature. The shelf lifes of sandwich and glutinousrice bread which surface sprayed with the diluted extract(1 : 1) was extended by 5 and 7 days, respectively.

  • An increase in oil and gas plants caused by development of process industry have brought into the increase in use of flammable and toxic materials in the complex process under high temperature and pressure. There is always possibility of fire and explosion of dangerous chemicals, which exist as raw materials, intermediates, and finished goods whether used or stored in the industrial plants. Since there is the need of efforts on disaster damage reduction or mitigation process, we have been conducting a research to relate explosion model on the background of real 3D terrain model. By predicting the extent of damage caused by recent disasters, we will be able to improve efficiency of recovery and, sure, to take preventive measure and emergency counterplan in response to unprepared disaster. For disaster damage prediction, it is general to conduct quantitative risk assessment, using engineering model for environmentaldescription of the target area. There are different engineering models, according to type of disaster, to be used for industry disaster such as UVCE (Unconfined Vapor Cloud Explosion), BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Evaporation Vapor Explosion), Fireball and so on, among them.we estimate explosion damage through UVCE model which is used in the event of explosion of high frequency and severe damage. When flammable gas in a tank is released to the air, firing it brings about explosion, then we can assess the effect of explosion. As 3D terrain information data is utilized to predict and estimate the extent of damage for each human and material. 3D terrain data with synthetic environment (SEDRIS) gives us more accurate damage prediction for industrial disaster and this research will show appropriate prediction results.

  • The cycloinulooligosaccharide fructanotransferase(CFTase) gene (cft) from Paenibacillus polymyxa was subcloned into the E. coli-yeast shuttle vector, pYES2.0 (GALI promoter). The constructed plasmid, pYGCFT (9.9 kb) was introduced into S. cerevisiae SEY2102 cell and then the yeast transformant was selected on the synthetic defined media lacking uracil Based on the cyclofructan(CF) spots on thin-layer chromatogram, the gene under the control of GALI promoter was successfully expressed in the yeast transformant. The recombinant CFTase was not secreted into the medium and was predominantly localized in the periplasmic space. CF was started to be produced after 3h of enzymatic reaction with inulin. The pH and temperature optimum for the CF production from inulin was pH 8.0 and 45$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Enzyme activity was stably maintained up to the pH of 10.0. The examination of the inulin sources revealed that a dahlia tuber and Jerusalem artichoke were the best for the production of CF.

  • This research aims to develop polymer composites which can be used for PEMFC separators by injection molding process. Considering the moldability and stiffness, we used PPS(Poly(phenylene sulfide)) and PP(Polypropylene) as base resin. In order to improve electrical conductivity and physical properties, we chose glass fiber, carbon fiber, carbon black, and both expanded graphite and synthetic graphite. The 3 type composites are prepared for injection molding of PEMFC separators. and CAE(Computer Aided Engineering) analysis was conducted to optimize injection processing parameters(injection pressure, heat time, mold temperature etc.). We did successfully fabricate the separators by injection molding, and measure the electrical conductivity of the samples by using four point probe device. Conclusively, PP/SG/CB composite showed better both electrical conductivity and moldability than the others.

  • A microbial strain capable of producing lactic acid was isolated and identified as Streptococcus faecium. During the incubation of the isolated bacterium in a synthetic medium (Petterson broth), the optimal temperature was 36 to 39$^{\circ}C$ and the cell concentration at stationary growth phase was 2.1${\times}$10$\^$8/ viable cells/ml. When it was dried in vacuum and diluted with avicel, the Viability of Streptococcus faecium in physiological saline solution was decreased to 80% after incubation for 48 hr at 37$^{\circ}C$, whereas the viability was above 90% after incubation for 1 hr at 40$^{\circ}C$ and the viability in M buffer solution (pH 4.5∼9.0) at 37$^{\circ}C$ was above 95%. From these data it was concluded that the isolated microbe must be adoptible for pharmaceutical preparation such as solid dosage form.

  • Marasmius scorodonius secretes an extracellular laccase in potato dextrose broth, and this enzyme was purified up to 206-fold using $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ precipitation and a Hi-trap Q Sepharose column. The molecular mass of the purified laccase was estimated to be ~67 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The UV/vis spectrum of the enzyme was nontypical for laccases, and metal content analysis revealed that the enzyme contains 1 mole of Fe and Zn and 2 moles of Cu per mole of protein. The optimal pH for the enzymatic activity was 3.4, 4.0, and 4.6 with 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS), guaiacol, and 2,6-dimethoxy phenol as the substrate, respectively. The optimal temperature of the enzyme was $75^{\circ}C$ with ABTS as the substrate. The enzyme was stable in the presence of some metal ions such as $Ca^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Ba^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$ at a low concentration (1 mM), whereas $Fe^{2+}$ completely inhibited the enzymatic activity. The enzymatic reaction was strongly inhibited by metal chelators and thiol compounds except for EDTA. This enzyme directly decolorized Congo red, Malachite green, Crystal violet, and Methylene green dyes at various decolorization rates of 63-90%. In the presence of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole as a redox mediator, the decolorization of Reactive orange 16 and Remazol brilliant blue R was also achieved.

  • Membrane assisted condenser is an innovative membrane operation that exploits the hydrophobic nature of microporous membranes to promote water vapor condensation and recovery. It can be used for water and chemicals recovery from waste gaseous streams. In this work, the testing of membrane condenser for water and ammonia recovery from synthetic streams (i.e., a saturated air stream with ammonia) simulating the plume of cooling tower is illustrated. The modeling of the process was carried out for predicting the membrane-based process performance and for identifying the minimum operating conditions for effectively recovering liquid water. The experimental data were compared with the results achieved through the simulations showing good agreement and confirming the validity of the model. It was found that the recovery of water can be increased growing the temperature difference between the plume and the membrane module (DT), the relative humidity of the plume (RHplume) and the feed flow rate on membrane area ratio. Moreover, the concentration of NH3 in the recovered liquid water increased with the growing DT, at increasing NH3 concentration in the fed gaseous stream and at growing relative humidity of the feed.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of application of the high voltage impulse (HVI) technique to the control of scale formation by calcium carbonate, which is pointed out as an important issue in industrial water treatment. The HVI system consisted of the power supply, high voltage generator, capacitors, switch and impulse generator was designed and made in laboratory scale, which can make 17kV impulse. HVI was introduced to the reactor that was filled with synthetic water containing $Ca^{2+}$ion. The concentration of calcium ion decreased only 3.0% after 5 minutes of contact time. However, it decreased up to 13.7% after 60 minutes of HVI contact time. Temperature and pH increased but conductivity decreased due to precipitation of the calcium carbonate. Although the decrease in concentration of calcium ion was not sufficient, it was verified that the HVI technique could be applicable for the softening and desalting processes.

  • Chitosan itself has been prepared using chitin, one of the most abundant compounds in nature, as a starting material. We have synthesized the water-soluble chitosan derivative, N-dithiocarboxy chitosan sodium salt, through the reaction of water-soluble chitosan with carbon disulfide in the presence of alkali metal hydroxide. To elucidate this natural polymer capacity of adsorbing heavy metal ions, we have performed adsorption experiments using the water-soluble chitosan derivative various average molecular weight and of different percent contents of sulfur. The effect of pH, adsorption time and temperature on adsorption efficiency was also studied. The adsorbent derived from water-soluble chitosan of average molecular weight ranging $9,000{\sim}120,000$ was shown to have the highest capacity of adsorbing heavy metal ions. On the whole, adsorbing efficiency was increased as the reaction time goes longer and also increased as the reaction temperture goes higer in temperture range of $15^{\circ}C{\sim}45^{\circ}C$. The adsorption capacity at various pH, however, was appeared to vary depending on the heavy metal ions studied Judging from these finding, water-soluble N-dithiocarboxy chitosan sodium salt, a derivative of a biodegradable nature polymer, is believed to be a potential adsorbent for heavy metal ions since it not only is shown to lower the concentration of heavy metal ions to below the drainage quality standard, but also it would not cause acidification and hardening of soil which is one of the detrimental effects of synthetic macromolecular adsorbents present.
