  • Ultrafine powders(UFPs) of aluminum nitride(AlN) have been synthesized by chemical reactions in the nitrogen atmosphere and the gaseous aluminum evaporated from Al powders in thermal plasmas produced by a DC plasma torch. A synthesis system consisting of a plasma torch, a finely-controllable powder feeder, a reaction chamber, and a quenching-collection chamber have been designed and manufactured, and a filter for gathering AlN UFPs produced by the quenching process subsequent to the synthesis is set up. The synthesis process is interpreted by numerical analyses of the plasma-particle interaction and the chemical equilibrium state, respectively, and a fully-saturated fractional factorial test is used to find the optimum process conditions. The degrees and ultrafineness of synthesis are evaluated by means of SEM, TEM, XRD, and ESCA analyses. AlN UFPs synthesized in the optimum process conditions have polygonal shapes of the size of 5-100 nm, and their purities differ depending on collecting positions and filter types, and the maximum purity obtained is 72 wt% at the filter.

  • In this work, we demonstrate that glycolytic intermediates can serve as efficient energy sources to regenerate ATP during continuous-exchange cell-free (CECF) protein synthesis reactions. Through the use of an optimal energy source, approximately 10 mg/ml of protein was generated from a CECF protein synthesis reaction at greatly reduced reagent costs. Compared with the conventional reactions utilizing phosphoenol pyruvate as an energy source, the described method yields 10-fold higher productivity per unit reagent cost, making the techniques of CECF protein synthesis a more realistic alternative for rapid protein production.

  • Glutathione (GSH) is a vital compound composed of glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine, crucial for cellular functions including oxidative stress defense and detoxification. It has widespread applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries due to its antioxidant properties and immune system support. Two primary methods for GSH synthesis are enzymatic and microbial fermentation. Enzymatic synthesis is efficient but costly, while microbial fermentation, particularly using yeast strains like Candida albicans, offers a cost-effective alternative. This study focuses on genetically modifying C. albicans mutants, specifically targeting glutathione reductase (GLR1) and gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (GCS1) genes, integral to GSH synthesis. By optimizing these mutants, the research aims to develop a model for efficient GSH production, potentially expanding its applications in the food industry.

  • An efficient enzyme system for the synthesis of L-tyrosine was developed using a fed-batch reactor with continuous feeding of phenol, pyruvate, and ammonia. A thermo- and chemostable tyrosine phenol-lyase from Symbiobacterium toebii was employed as the biocatalyst in this work. The enzyme was produced using a constitutive expression system in Escherichia coli BL21, and prepared as a soluble extract by rapid clarification, involving treatment with 40% methanol in the presence of excess ammonium chloride. The stability of the enzyme was maintained for at least 18 h under the synthesis conditions, including 75 mM phenol at pH 8.5 and $40^{\circ}C$. The fed-batch system (working volume, 0.51) containing 1.0 kU of the enzyme preparation was continuously fed with two substrate preparations: one containing 2.2 M phenol and 2.4 M sodium pyruvate, and the other containing 0.4 mM pyridoxal-5-phosphate and 4M ammonium chloride (pH 8.5). The system produced 130g/I of L-tyrosine within 30h, mostly as precipitated particles, upon continuous feeding of the substrates for 22 h. The maximum conversion yield of L-tyrosine was 94% on the basis of the supplied phenol.

  • Generally, stereo pair images are necessary for 3D viewing. In the absence of quality stereo-pair images, it is possible to synthesize a stereo-mate suitable for 3D viewing with a single image and a depth-map. In remote sensing, DEM is usually used as a depth-map. In this paper, LiDAR data was used instead of DEM to make a stereo pair from a single aerial photo. Each LiDAR point was assigned a brightness value from the original single image by registration of the image and LiDAR data. And then, imaginary exposure station and image plane were assumed. Finally, LiDAR points with already-assigned brightness values were back-projected to the imaginary plane for synthesis of a stereo-mate. The imaginary exposure station and image plane were determined to have only a horizontal shift from the original image's exposure station and plane. As a result, the stereo-mate synthesized in this paper fulfilled epipolar geometry and yielded easily-perceivable 3D viewing effect together with the original image. The 3D viewing effect was tested with anaglyph at the end.

  • An emergency response system (ERS) for vessel oil spills is a complex and dynamic system comprising a number of subsystems and activities. Failures may occur during the emergency response operations, this has negative impacts on the effectiveness of the ERS. Of the classes of problems in analyzing failures, the lack of quantitative data is fundamental. In fact, most of the empirical data collected via questionnaire survey is subjective in nature and is inevitably associated with uncertainties caused by the human being's inability to provide complete judgement. In addition, incomplete information and/or vagueness of the meaning about the failures add difficulties in evaluating the effectiveness of the system. Therefore this paper proposes a framework to evaluate the ERS effectiveness by using the combination of fuzzy reasoning and evidential synthesis approaches. Based on analyzing the procedure of ERS for oil spills, the failures in the system could be identified, using Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)to determine the relative weight of identified failures. Fuzzy reasoning combined with evidential synthesis is applied to evaluate the effectiveness of ERS for oil spills under uncertainties last. The proposed method is capable of dealing with uncertainties in data including ignorance and vagueness which traditional methods cannot effectively handle. A case study is used to illustrate the application of the proposed method.

  • Nano-sized iron particles were synthesized by reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ in aqueous solution under two reaction conditions, aerobic and anaerobic, and the reactivity of iron was tested by reaction with trichloroethene (TCE) using a batch system. Results showed that iron produced under anoxic condition for both synthesis and drying steps gave rise to iron with higher reduction reactivity, indicating the presence of oxygen is not favorable for production of nano-sized iron deemed to accomplish reactivity enhancement from particle sized reduction. Nano-sized iron sample obtained from the anoxic synthesis condition was further characterized using various instrumental measurements to identity particle morphology, composition, surface area, and particle size distribution. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image showed that synthesized particles were uniform, spherical particles (< 100 nm), and aggregated into various chain structures. The effects of other synthesis conditions such as solution pH, initial $Fe^{3+}$ concentration, and reductant injection rate on the reactivity of nano-sized iron, along with standardization of the synthesis protocol, are presented in the companion paper.

  • The effect of bovine growth hormone digested with trypsin on whole-body protein synthesis in vitro of chicken embryos was investigated by using a whole-embryo culture system. Bovine growth hormone at 5.3 and 530 ng/ml was digested partially and completely with trypsin for 4 min and 18 h, respectively. After culturing chicken embryos with a synthetic medium containing $L-[4-^3H]$ pheylalanine, whole-embryo protein synthesis was determined from the ratio of specific radioactivities of free and protein-bound pheylalanine. Whole-embryo protein synthesis of the control group cultured with no bovine growth hormone was $49.5{\pm}2.2%/d$. There was no significant interaction between digestion time and the concentration of trypsin-digested bovine growth hormone. Tryptic digestion of bovine growth hormone increased fractional synthesis rates of whole-body protein compared to the 0-min groups, and there was no significant difference between the 4-min and 18-h groups. The higher concentration (530 ng/ml) of trypsin-digested bovine growth hormone was more effective in enhancing whole-embryo protein synthesis than the lower concentration (5.3 ng/ml).

  • In this paper, we propose a multi-view stereoscopic image synthesis algorithm for 3DTV system using depth information with an RGB texture from a depth camera. The proposed algorithm synthesizes multi-view images which a virtual convergence camera model could generate. Experimental results showed that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than those of conventional methods.
