  • This paper describes a multi-step method of intonation modeling for corpus-based Korean speech synthesizer. We selected 1833 sentences considering various syntactic structures and built a corresponding speech corpus uttered by a female announcer. We detected the pitch using laryngograph signals and manually marked the prosodic boundaries on recorded speech, and carried out the tagging of part-of-speech and syntactic analysis on the text. The detected pitch was separated into 3 frequency bands of low, mid, high frequency components which correspond to the baseline, the word tone, and the syllable tone. We predicted them using the CART method and the Viterbi search algorithm with a word-tone-dictionary. In the collected spoken sentences, 1500 sentences were trained and 333 sentences were tested. In the layer of word tone modeling, we compared two methods. One is to predict the word tone corresponding to the mid-frequency components directly and the other is to predict it by multiplying the ratio of the word tone to the baseline by the baseline. The former method resulted in a mean error of 12.37 Hz and the latter in one of 12.41 Hz, similar to each other. In the layer of syllable tone modeling, it resulted in a mean error rate less than 8.3% comparing with the mean pitch, 193.56 Hz of the announcer, so its performance was relatively good.

  • Dependency Grammar has been used by Iinguists as the basis of the syntactic components of their grammar formalisms. It has also been used in natural langauge parsing. In China, attempts have been made to use this grammar formalism to parse Chinese sentences using corpus based techniques. This paper reviews the properties of Dependency Grammar as embodied in four axioms for the well-formedness conditions for dependency structures. It is shown that allowing mul tiple governors as done by some followers of this formalism is unnecessary. The practice of augmenting Dependency Grammar with functional labels is discussed in the light of building functional structures when the sentence is parsed. This will also facilitate semantic interpretion.retion.

  • Of the coordination structures in Korean, the symmetric and asymmetric properties of verbal coordination have challenged both theoretical and computational approaches. This paper shows how a typed feature structure grammar, HPSG, together with the notions of 'type hierarchy' and 'constructions', can provide a robust basis for parsing (un)tensed verbal coordination as well as pseudo-coordination found in the language. We show that the analysis sketched here and computationally implemented in the existing resource grammar for Korean, Korean Resource Grammar (KRG), can yield proper syntactic structures as well as enriched semantic representations for real-time applications such as machine translation.

  • This paper argues that various kinds of displaced structures in English should be licensed by a more explicitly formulated type of rule schema in order to deal with what is called weak connectivity in English. This paper claims that the filler and the gap site cannot maintain the total identity of features but a partial overlap since the two positions need to obey the structural forces that come from occupying respective positions. One such case is the missing object construction where the subject fillers and the object gaps are to observe requirements that are imposed on the respective positions. Others include passive constructions and topicalized structures. In this paper, it is argued that the feature discrepancy comes from the different syntactic positions in which the fillers are assumed to be located before and after displacement. In order to capture this type of mismatch, syntactically relevant features are handled separately from the semantically motivated features in order to deal with the syntactically imposed requirements.

  • This paper describes procedures to model and synthesize emotional speech in a multimedia environment. At first, procedures to model the visual representation of emotional speech are proposed. To display the sequences of the images in synchronized form with speech, MSF(Multimedia Speech File) format is proposed and the display software is implemented. Then the emotional speech sinal is collected and analysed to obtain the prosodic characteristics of the emotional speech in limited domain. Multi-emotional sentences are spoken by actors. From the emotional speech signals, prosodic structures are compared in terms of the pseudo-syntactic structure. Based on the analyzed result, neutral speech is transformed into a specific emotinal state by modifying the prosodic structures.

  • In this pater, we present a syntactic software complexity measure based on program control structure using Petri Nets. Since control structure in program may be segregated by three structures such as sequence, condition and iteration structures, we are proposed a structured complexity measure based on program control structure after represented by Petri Nets. Finally, we compare our result with other measures of program complexity.

  • In this paper, a new method of Hangul recognition is proposed to solve the problems of misrecognition owing to the contacts of FCEs (Fundamental Character Elements) in a Hangul pattern. Structures of FCFs are represented with PAG(Programmed Array Grammar) to recognize an input pattern on 2-D. array of pels., and the unnecessary deformation of the conventional approach can be eliminated by using PEACE parsing which extracts primitives and computes attributes in the course of analyzing the structure of an input pattern. Also, primitive transformation at contacts can afford to confirm all the possible structures of an input pattern and solve the problem of misrecognition owing to the contacts of FCEs. The recognition rate of proposed method for printed Hangul characters shows 96.2% for 1978 Gothic-letters and 92.0% for 1920 Myng-style-letters, respectively.

  • In order to improve the performance of the existing relation extraction approaches, we propose a method for combining two pivotal concepts which play an important role in classifying semantic relationships between entities in text. Having built a composite kernel-based relation extraction system, which incorporates both entity features and syntactic structured information of relation instances, we define nine classes of lexical features and synthetically apply them to the system. Evaluation on the ACE RDC corpus shows that our approach boosts the effectiveness of the existing composite kernels in relation extraction. It also confirms that by integrating the three important features (entity features, syntactic structures and contextual lexical features), we can improve the performance of a relation extraction process.

  • Ontologies are expected in various areas as promising tools to improve communication among people and to achieve interoperability among systems. For communications between different business domains, building an ontology through integrating existing ontologies is more efficient way than building the ontology without them. However, integration of ontologies is very struggling work since languages, domains, and structures of ontologies are different from each other. In this paper, we suggest an Ontology Architecture which solves this problem by providing a systematic framework to classify ontologies from three kinds of viewpoints : language, domain range, constructs. The Ontology Architecture consists of 3 axes according to the 3 viewpoints : Ontology Meta Layer axis, Semantic Domain Layer axis, and Ontology Constructs Layer axis. Because 3 axes in Ontology Architecture are designed to improve the syntactic and semantic interoperability among ontologies, the integration of ontologies can be readily achieved.

  • A document type definition(DTD) which defines tags for a document is a XML document grammar that defines syntactic structure of a document. An XML document keeps the rules and must be parsed to check validation. To parse XML document, the deterministic parsing method of programming language is irrelevant because it does not satisfy the definition of deterministic content model in element declaration. In this paper, we consider editing of a valid XML document in syntax-directed editing environment, and we suggest the internal storage representations of syntax in DTD and theirs algorithms. The consequence is that a syntactic structure of textual DTD is transformed into graph and table structures. The table structure of DTD is interpreted the context free grammar which has attribute values and is used in syntax-directed editor for XML. We called this the XML abstract grammar and showed generated results and examples.
