This parer presents the application of response surface methodology (RSM) to design optimization for two types of synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) one has 12 slots with distributed winding, and the other has 6 slots with concentrated winding, to improve the ratio between torque ripple and average torque. The usefulness of RSM in optimization problem of SynRM is verified as compared with the results of finite element analysis. In the end, the optimized two SynRMs are compared with SynRM currently used in air-conditioning compressor in connection with torque performance and loss.
The electrical parameters are used to calculate gains in the current regulator as well as to determine the reference currents of speed controller in various control strategies of Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRMs). Many methods of measuring or estimating the electrical parameters of SynRM have been proposed by other authors. But almost papers only measure or estimate in the limited conditions without fully considering the effects of inverter, connecting wire and magnetic saturation. The parameter results are usually different from the real system parameters. The drive performance, therefore, can not be good if using inaccurate parameters. In this paper, several methods used to measure the electrical parameters are introduced. The first method is LCR meter. And then, a method determining inductances by measuring AC current and voltage from AC power supply is presented. A new method with high reliability is proposed to measure the electrical parameters of SynRM. The experiment results verify the effectiveness of the new proposed method.
This paper deals with the characteristic Analysis of synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) using coupled Preisach modeling & FEM. The focus of this paper is the characteristic Analysis relative to Inductances and losses on the basis of stator slot number, winding in SynRMs. The coupled Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) & Preisach model has been used to evaluate the nonlinear solution. Comparisons arc given with characteristics of normal distributed winding SynRM and those according to stator slot number, winding in concentrated winding SynRM, respectively.
This paper presents the design of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) for electric air conditioning compressors which are applied to hybrid electric vehicles (EVs). The motor for driving air conditioning compressor which is recently used on EV(electric vehicle) / HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) is PMSM(permanent magnet synchronous motor) or BLDCM(brushless DC motor). However disadvantage of motors that uses permanent magnets are vulnerable to high temperatures because of the demagnetization by the high temperature and the permanent magnet is expensive because of the high price of rare earth materials from China's monopoly. Therefore, in the automotive insustry is interested in the non-rare-earth motors. SRM has many advantages. it's resistant to high temperatures, price is cheaper, because there are no permanent magnets and winding in the rotor. Also it's high relability and efficiency, suitable for high-speed operation because of structure is simple. In this paper, the SRM, non-rare-earth motor, are designed, analyzed and experimented drive to replace an existing electric compressor drive motor.
The interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is often used for the traction motor of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) due to its high power density and wide speed range. This paper introduces the 120kW class IPMSM for traction motors in military trucks. This system, as a SHEV (series hybrid electric vehicle), requires a traction motor that can generate high torque. This study introduces a way to reduce costs by proposing a design approach that creates reluctance torque that can be maximized by varying the dq-axis inductance. If a model designed by a design approach meets the desired torque, the magnetic torque can be reduced by an amount equal to the increase in reluctance torque and consequently the amount of permanent magnets can be reduced. A reduction gear and high speed operation of motors are necessary for the miniaturization of the motor. Thus, a fairly large centrifugal force is generated due to the high speed rotation. This force causes mechanical interference between the rotor and the stator, and a design approach for adding an iron bridge is explained to solve the interference. In this study, the initial model and the improved model that reduces cost and improves mechanical durability are compared by FEA, and the models are produced. Finally, the FEM results were verified experimentally.
In this paper, the influence of inverter switching harmonics on iron loss and PM loss of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is numerically investigated by Finite Element Method (FEM). In particular, nonlinear FEM is applied for a multi-layered PM Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), Interior buried PMSM (IPMSM) and PM assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor (PMa-SynRM), which are adoptively designed and compared for Electric Vehicle (EV) propulsion. In particular, iron loss and PM eddy-current loss under the real current waveform including the carrier harmonics from inverter switching are numerically analyzed with nonlinear FEM by considering the skewed stator structure employed for minimizing spatial harmonics.

Machine parameters need to measure in advance for vector control and theoretical analysis. Therefore, we present the machine parameter measurement scheme, considering stator iron loss, by the single-phase test at standstill condition. Using this method, the d-q axis inductances and the equivalent iron loss resistance in the voltage equation considering stator iron loss are easily measured. This method is simple and does not need to use complex theory and expensive equipment.
This paper describes current controlled PWM technique of IPM synchronous motors for a wide variety of speed control applications. The IPM synchronous motors have a saliency, in which the q-axis inductance is larger than the d-axis inductance. As a consequence, there exists a reluctance torque component Thus when this component is added to the torque component produced by the stator currents and the air-gap flux, IPM motor drives are readily applicable where full torque Is required up to full or base speed. They are however limited in their ability to operate in the power limited regime where the available torque is reduced as the speed is increased above its base value. This paper reviews the operation of the IPMSM drives when they are constrained to be within the permissible envelope of maximum inverter voltage and current to produce the rated power and to provide this with the highest attainable rotor speed. The wide variety of speed control strategy is analyzed and the performance is investigated by the computer simulation using actual parameters of a drive system. Simulation results are given and discussed.
A magnetic flux saturation model of Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRMs) and a parameter estimation method are proposed at standstill. The proposed magnetic flux model includes the nonlinear relationship between the current and the magnetic flux for self-saturation and cross-saturation. Voltage is injected at standstill to estimate the magnetic flux saturation model. Voltages are injected into the d-axis and q-axis to obtain data on self-saturation. Subsequently, voltages are simultaneously injected into the d-q axis to obtain data on cross-saturation. On the basis of the measured current and the calculated magnetic flux, the parameters of the proposed model are estimated using the least square method (LSM). Simulation and experiment were performed on a 1.5-kW SynRM to verify the proposed method. The proposed model can be used to create a high-efficiency operation table, a sensorless algorithm, and a current controller to improve the control performance of a motor.
