  • In this paper, a nonlinear optimal design technique is presented to find an optimal beam pattern. With this technique, the beam width is minimized with respect to a given maximum allowable side-lobe level considering the self- and mutual radiation impedances of vibrators. The proposed method is applied to design a planar array consisting 37 vibrators which are symmetric in X, Y and $45^{circ}$ axes. The results show that significantly low side-lobe level maintaining a main beam width can be obtained using this method.

  • In a companion paper as well as in earlier publications, it has been shown that in asymmetric frame buildings, designed in accordance with modern codes and subjected to strong earthquake excitations, the ductility demands at the so called "flexible" edges are consistently and substantially higher than the ductility demands at the "stiff" edges of the building. In some cases the differences in the computed ductility factors between elements at the two opposite building edges exceeded 100%. Similar findings have also been reported for code designed reinforced concrete buildings. This is an undesirable behavior as it indicates no good use of material and the possibility for overload of the "flexible" edge members with a consequent potential for premature failure. In the present paper, a design modification will be introduced that can alleviate the problem and lead to a more uniform distribution of ductility demands in the elements of all building edges. The presented results are based on the steel frames detailed in the companion paper. This investigation is another step towards more rational design of non-symmetric steel buildings.

  • In this study, a binary dielectric annular nanoring lens is proposed to cover the full range of optical phase. The lens is designed numerically, based on the effective-medium theory. The performance of the proposed lens is verified for the cases of single-focal and dual-focal lenses. The efficiency of a single-focal lens is improved by 17.19% compared to a binary dielectric lens, and that of a dual-focal lens shows enhancements of 13.11% and 49.41% at the two focal points. This lens design can be applied to other optical components with axially symmetric structures.

  • Temperature control of a rubber injection mold is important for the dimensional accuracy of product. The main objective of this paper is to optimize the arrangement of heaters by FEM and optimal design method. Firstly, 3-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis was carried out for a square specimen mold. Results of FE analysis are a good agreement with the experimental results, showing about 1.22~7.22% error in temperature distribution. Secondly, we suggested the optimal method about an arrangement of heaters of rubber injection mold by using the optimal design technique. Distances between heater's center and the contact surface of mold, distances between heater's center and symmetric surface were considered as design variables. And the variances between the temperatures of cavity surfaces and their average temperature were used as the objective functions. Applying the optimal solution, the temperature variation was improved about 52.9~88.1 % compared to the existing mold. As a result of sensitivity analysis for design variables, design variables parallel to the direction of the split plane in mold affect the largest on the surface temperature variation in mold cavity.

  • This paper developed motifs through the use of images of masks with which the Korean innate consciousness of aesthetics is expressed. The motifs were applied to fashion items. This paper investigated the concept, origin and types of traditional masks through the existing literature. Using the computer graphic programs of Illustrator and Photoshop CS2, three basic motifs were set from the images of the nobleman, Bune of Hahoi Tal and Byeongsan Tal. Each motif was extended into two motifs by changing shape and color. For the basic motif design, this study sought to express contemporary images, suitably for each fashion item, while maintaining the basic shape of the masks and their traditional images. In addition, this study set the concept of the design so that could be accepted by various age groups. For the design of handkerchiefs, a rotating array, involving enlargement, reduction, repetition, and the gradation of motifs, as well as a diagonal symmetric array, and all-over patterns were developed. The T-shirt design created here was divided into a half-sleeve box type, a round neckline sleeveless type, a V-neckline close-fitting sleeveless type, and a V-neckline close-fitting cap sleeve type. For the design of necklaces, OLED or LED, which are considered as a future display type, was used. Additionally, the production of an entertainment styled new atmosphere is proposed.

  • The methods of design available for geocell-supported embankments are very few. Two of the earlier methods are considered in this paper and a third method is proposed and compared with them. In the first method called slip line method, plastic bearing failure of the soil was assumed and the additional resistance due to geocell layer is calculated using a non-symmetric slip line field in the soft foundation soil. In the second method based on slope stability analysis, general-purpose slope stability program was used to design the geocell mattress of required strength for embankment. In the third method proposed in this paper, geocell reinforcement is designed based on the plane strain finite element analysis of embankments. The geocell layer is modelled as an equivalent composite layer with modified strength and stiffness values. The strength and dimensions of geocell layer is estimated for the required bearing capacity or permissible deformations. These three design methods are compared through a design example. It is observed that the design method based on finite element simulations is most comprehensive because it addresses the issue of permissible deformations and also gives complete stress, deformation and strain behaviour of the embankment under given loading conditions.

  • This paper focuses on the design of a flux-biased rotary electromagnetic actuator with compact structure for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator has high force density and its torque output shows linear dependence on both excitation current and rotation angle. Benefiting from a new electromagnetic topology, no additional axial force is generated and an armature with small moment of inertia is achieved. To improve modeling accuracy, the actuator is modeled with flux leakage taken into account. In order to achieve an FSM with good performance, a design methodology is presented. The methodology aims to achieve a balance between torque output, torque density and required coil magnetomotive force. By using the design methodology, the actuator which will be used to drive our FSM is achieved. The finite element simulation results validate the design results, along with the concept design, magnetic analysis and torque output model.

  • A self-diagnostic, air-damped, piezoresitive, cantilever-beam microaccelerometer has been designed, fabricated and tested for applications to automotive electronic airbag systems. A skew-symmetric proof-mass has been designed for self-diagnostic capability and zero transverse sensitivity. Two kinds of multi-step anisotropic etching processes are developed for beam thickness control and fillet-rounding formation, UV-curing paste has been used for sillicon-to-glass bounding. The resonant frequency of 2.07kHz has been measured from the fabricated devices. The sensitivity of 195 $\mu{V}$/g is obtained with a nonlinearity of 4% over $\pm$50g ranges. Flat amplitude response and frequency-proportional phase response have been obserbed, It is shown that the design and fabricaiton methods developed in the present study yield a simple, practical and effective mean for improving the performance, reliability as well as the reproducibility of the accelerometers.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of the video conferencing system using public key infrastructure which is used for user authentication and encryption. Public key infrastructure reinforces the authentication process for conference participant, and the symmetric key system blocks malicious access to information and protect conference control information. This paper shows the implementation of the trans portation layer secure protocol in conformity with Korea public key authentication algorithm standard and symmetric encryption algorithm (DES, 3DES and AES) for media stream encryption. In this paper, we deal with two ways of protecting information : transportation layer secure protocol secures user authentication process and the conference control information; while public key-based authentication system protects personal information of users when they connect to the network. When distributing the session keys for encryption, Internet Key Exchange is used for P2P communication, and secure protocol is employed for 1 : N multi-user communication in the way of distributing the public key-based en-cryption key.

  • The purpose of this research was to produce symmetric (Saturated-Unsaturated-Saturated, SUS) triacylglycerol (TAG) using palm stearin fraction oil (PSFO) and high oleic sunflower oil (HOSO) as substrates to replace cocoa butter. PSFO was blended with HOSO (1 : 2 weight ratio), and $lipozyme^{(R)}$ TLIM (20 weight % of the substrate) was added. Interesterification was carried out in a shaking water bath at $55^{\circ}C$ at 220 rpm for 6 hours. The response surface methodology (RSM) through the central composite face design was employed to observe the optimized SUS-TAG. The independent factors were the reaction temperature ($X_1$: 65, 75 and $85^{\circ}C$), reaction time ($X_2$: 1, 3 and 5 hours) and ratio of TLIM ($X_3$: 10, 15 and 20 weight %). The dependent variables were $Y_1$ = Saturated-Unsaturated-Unsaturated (SUU, area %), $Y_2=SUS$ (area %), $Y_3$ = Saturated-Saturated-Unsaturated (SSU, area %), $Y_4$ = Unsaturated-Unsaturated-Unsaturated (UUU, area %), and $Y_5=sn-2$ unsaturated fatty acid (area %). The optimal conditions from the central composite face design minimized acyl migration while maximizing the presence of unsaturated fatty acid at the sn-2 position (73.43 area %). The optimal conditions were $X_1=65^{\circ}C$, $X_2=1hour$, and $X_3=20weight%$. As a result of the response surface analysis, the lack of fits was found as $Y_1=0.622$, $Y_2=0.438$, $Y_3=0.264$, $Y_4=0.526$, and $Y_5=0.215$, and their $R^2$ were 0.897, 0.944, 0.826, 0.857, and 0.867, respectively.
