  • Optical packet switching (OPS) is being considered as one of the switching technologies for a future optical internet. For contention resolution in an optical packet switching (OPS) system, the wavelength dimension is generally used in combination with a fiber delay line (FDL) buffer. In this article, we propose a method to reduce the number of tunable wavelength converters (TWCs) by sharing TWCs for a cost-effective design of an asynchronous OPS system with a shared or an output FDL buffer. Asynchronous and variable-length packets are considered in the OPS system design. To investigate the number of TWCs needed for the OPS system, an algorithm is proposed, which searches for an available TWC and an unused internal wavelength, as well as an outgoing channel. This algorithm is applied to an OPS system with a shared or an output FDL buffer. Also, the number of internal wavelengths (i.e., the conversion range of the TWC) needed for an asynchronous OPS system is presented for cost reduction of the OPS system.

  • In this paper, an optimal determination method of the subband-frame size and mode-switching level is proposed for adaptive OFDM-TDD systems in frequency-selective time-varying channels. The optimization problem considering frequency selectivity. user's mobility, and the signaling overhead caused by the mode change information is formulated in the maximum spectral efficiency sense satisfying the target BER. Assuming that subband-frame size is given, the mode-switching level is first optimized so that the spectral efficiency can be maximized satisfying the target BER. The subband-frame size among candidates is then determined, which maximizes the spectral efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms conventional schemes, in terms of the spectral efficiency and the BER.

  • Many types of switching fabrics have been proposed for use in ATM networks. Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) constitute a large class of ATM switching systems that are widely used in today´s internetworking. One of the most veil-known types of multistage networks is the banyan network. The banyan network is attractive for its simple routing scheme and low hardware complexity, but its throughput is very limited due to internal blocking and output contention. In this paper, we propose an input-buffered dual-banyan switch model with multiple switching fabric between switch input and output to avoid internal and Head-of Line blocking. By performance analysis and simulation, we show that our model has a lower ceil delay and 96% throughput which is much better than other banyan-type switch architecture.

  • In this paper, we propose a modeling of the broadcasting in the IEEE 802.11p MAC protocol for the VANET(Vehicular Ad hoc Networks). Due to the fact that the beacon message which is needed for the safety services is shared via broadcasting, the analytical modeling of the broadcasting is crucial for the optimum design of the services. Two characteristics specific to the IEEE 802.11p are reflected in the modeling; the time limited CCH interval caused by the channel switching between the CCH and SCH, and no retransmission of the broadcasted messages. In the proposal, we assumed no restriction on the moment of generation of the beacon messages. We allow the messages to be generated and broadcasted within the whole CCH interval. Simulation results prove the accuracy of the proposed modeling. Noticeable improvements are also observed in terms of the performance indices such as the successful delivery ratio, transmission delay, and the variation of the delay.

  • ATM packet switching technologies for the purpose of the B-ISDN service are focused on high performance which represents good qualities on throughput, packet loss, and packet delay. ATM switch designs on a class of parallel interconnection network have been researched. But these are based on the self-routing function of it. It leads to conflict with each other, and to lose the packets. Therefore, this paper proposes the method based on Sort-Banyan network should be adopted for optimal routing algorithm. It is difficult to expect good hardware complexity. For good performance, a switch design based on the development of new routing algorithm is required. For the design of switch network, the packet distributor and multiplane are proposed. They prevent each packet from blocking as being transmitted selectively by two step distributed decision algorithm. This switch will be proved to be a good performance switch network that internal blocking caused from self-routing function is removed. Also, it is expected to minimize the packet loss and decrease the packet delay according to packet transmission.

  • In VOD(Video-on-Demand) system, the real-time interactive service is one of the most important factor to determine the degree of QoS(Quality of Service). In this paper, we propose the head-end system consisted of switching agent and head-end node, which needs to receive the only video stream for multiple users which have requested the same video, to serve the unlimited interactive service which has no service delay and block. The unlimited VCR services can be served by storing the video stream with buffer at client and head-end node. And the proposed algorithm presents the method to enhance the efficiency by buffer, offer the true interactive VOD services to users because all of service requested by clients are processed immediately. In this paper, we implemented the VOD system which has the VCR functions without service delay and block. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm has better performance in the number of service request and time interval.

  • We design a modified network architecture with condsidering current Internet network model and traffic characteristics, and propose EDCBT(Enhanced Dispersed Core-based Tree) multicast routing protocol, which enhances scalabity, reliability, end-to-end delay and resource utilization EDBCT adopts bidirectional dispersed shared trees and manages both of intradomain and interdomain multicast trees for a multicast group. Each regional multicast tree is estabilshed from its core router and they are interconnected by the operation between border routers on edges of each regional network. As a result, interdomain multicast tree can be easily established. We introduce a new concept named RBTS(Region-based Tree Switching), which dramatically enhances QoS and network utilization. Finally, protocol performance and the effect of core router location are evaluated with MIL3 OPNet network simulator, in terms of end-to-end delay, packet loss and throughput.

  • This paper proposes a new output-buffered multicast ATM switch with tandem crosspoints switching fabric, named the MTCOS(Multicast Tandem Crosspoint Output-buffered Switch). The MTCOS consists of multiple simple crosspoint switch fabrics, named TCSF(Tandem Crosspoint Switch Fabric) , and concentrated output buffers for efficient multicasting. The TCSF resolves the cell delay deviation problem which the self-routing crossbar switches inherently have. Further, it offers multiple concurrent pathes from one input to multiple output ports. It also provides multi-channel switching by easy software configuration and has several desirable characteristics such as scalability, high Performance, and modularity. A shared traffic concentration and output queuing strategies of the MTCOS results in lower cell loss as well as lower cell delay time over a wide range of multicast traffic. Furthermore, it has lower hardware complexity than that of the SCOQ and Knockout multicast switch to achieve the same Knockout concentration rate as the conventional switches. It is shown that the proposed switch can be easily applied to design high performance for any multicast traffic by analytic analysis and computer simulation.

  • Next Generation Networks (NGN) is defined as IP-based networks with multi-services and with multi-access networks. A variety of services and access technologies are co-existed within NGN. Therefore there are numerous transport technologies such as Differentiated Services (DiffServ), Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS), and the combined transport technologies. In such an environment, flows are aggregated and de-aggregated multiple times in their end-to-end paths. In this research, a method for calculating end-to-end delay bound for such a flow, provided that the information exchanged among networks regarding flow aggregates, especially the maximum burst size of a flow aggregate entering a network. We suggest an admission control mechanism that can decide whether the requested performance for a flow can be met. We further verify the suggested calculation and admission algorithm with a few realistic scenarios.

  • Cellular network applications are growing drastically and this requires a fast and efficient transport method between the base station and the mobile switching center. One possible solution is to use ATM links. The low data rate and small-sized packets in the typical cellular applications imply that significant amount of link bandwidth would be wasted, if this small sized packet is carried by one ATM cell. For efficient operation for such cellular and low bit rate applications, a new type of ATM Adaptation Layer, AAL Type 2, has been proposed. In this paper, the principles of AAL Type 2 are briefly described along with the introduction of other alternatives which have formed the basis for this new AAL. The result from the simulation to study the performance of the AAL Type 2 is discussed from the view point of packet delay and ATM cell use efficiency. Due to the variable size of packets in this application, the fairness issue in serving variable sized packets is also discussed along with the effect of fair queueing algorithm implemented at AAL Type 2.
