Optimal Switching Angle Control of a Switched Reluctance Motor: Maximization of Energy Conversion Ratio

  • In this paper an optimal switching angle control of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive system is investigated for achieving maximum energy conversion ratio. A new magnetizing method is proposed with a low switching frequency. The proposed algorithm maximizes the positive energy conversion region, which is directly related to the mechanical output, and reduces the reactive power region with the same field energy region. As a consequence, a torque ripple is also sufficiently reduced compared with that of the conventional switching angle magnetizing method. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme provides a high efficiency and a low ripple drive.

  • As a part of trajectory modulation to increase system survivability and terminal effectiveness, impact angle control is required in the terminal phase of tactical missile systems. The missile systems are not allowed to have high altitude to reduce probability of detection by sensors of missile defense systems. In this paper, an analytic form of a time-optimal control law is suggested in the case of constrained missile maneuverability and impact angle under the assumption of a zero-lag autopilot. The control law is obtained by establishing optimal missile-target engagement geometry in the vertical plane. Extension of the law for missiles with autopilot response lags requiring a numerical solution is studied by introducing an iterative algorithm for optimal switching time determination of which the initial switching instants are obtained from the analytic solution. Also suggested is a closed-form impact angle control law derived by an energy-optimal approach. The performances of the proposed guidance laws are evaluated by a series of computer runs.

  • Inductive power transfer (IPT) systems for electric vehicles generally require zero phase angle (ZPA) frequency tracking control to achieve high efficiency. Current sensors are used for ZPA frequency tracking control. However, the use of current sensors causes several problems, such as switching noise, degrading control performance, and control complexity. To solve these problems, this study proposes ZPA frequency tracking control without current sensors. Such control enables ZPA frequency tracking without real-time control and achieves stable zero voltage switching operation closed to ZPA frequency within all coupling coefficient and load ranges. The validity of the proposed control algorithm is verified on LCCL-S topology with a 3.3 kW rating IPT experimental test bed. Simulation verification is also performed.

  • Switched Reluctance Generator attracts much attention because of high effciency, simple controllability with traction drive. But the theories that have been adopted as SRG control methods are complicated up to the present. This paper proposes reference current limitation strategy for stable generation of SRM and switching angle control. The proposed method is verified by simulation and experiments.

  • The torque of SRM depends on phase current and the derivative of inductance. But the inductance of SRM is nonlinearly changed according to rotor position angle and phase current because of saturation in magnetic circuit.   • This paper represent improved On-line Turn off, commutation Angle control schemes for switched reluctance motors based on current control. For the purpose of the finding optimal commutation switching angle point, it is utilized turn on and turn off position calculation with inductance vs. current vs. flux linkage analysis method. The goal of proposed paper is the maximization of the energy conversion per stroke and maximizing efficiency and obtaining approximately flat-topped current waveform. The proposed control scheme is demonstrated on a simulation experimental result.

  • This paper presents the switching angle and voltage to maximize torque/efficiency and minimize torque ripple in the 4-phase 6-poles Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM). SRM drive has high saturation and nonlinear characteristics of inductance. So we cannot hard to find optimal condition by using analytic method. Therefore it is hard to find the operating the switching angle and voltage through the approximated analysis and computer simulation by using SIMULINK according to the speed and torque required by load. From the results, we can say that the optimum average voltage is determined by the load only and the speed is determined by the optimum turn-on/off angle only. And the maximum efficiency and minimum torque ripple depend on switching angle, not on voltage. And then one-chip microcontroller controls the switching angle and voltage of an asymmetrical inverter in the SRM driver. This drive method, which is expect that the driving methods, which are maximizing torque/efficiency and minimizing torque ripple, will be suitable for the electric vehicle, the industrial application and household appliances.

An Analog Encoder for Precise Angle Control of SRM

  • In a switched reluctance motor drive, it is important to synchronize the stator phase excitation with the rotor position, because the position of rotor is an essential information. Although high resolution optical encoders or resolvers are used to provide a precise position information, these sensors are expensive. Moreover, in the high-speed region, switching angles are fluctuated back and forth out of the preset value, which is caused by the sampling period of the microprocessor. In this paper, a low cost analog encoder suitable for practical applications is proposed. And the control algorithm to generate switching signals using a Simple digital logic is presented. The validity of the proposed analog encoder with a proper logic controller is verified from the experiments.

  • The switched reluctance motor (SRM) would have torque ripple if not operated with an MMF waveform specified for switching angle and phase voltage. This paper describes the robustic control scheme that permits the phase torque to be flat by PLL(Phase Locked Loop) controller. In this control scheme, the locked phase signal of PLL controls the switching dwell angle and it's loop filter signal controls the switching voltage adaptively. Experimental results show that stable dynamic performance is obtained for torque and speed together with low torque ripple on the operation of variable loads.

  • We have studied the viewing angle control using a twist nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCDs). These TK-LCDs have the characteristics, of which is not good image quality, for examples low Contrast ratio and gray scale inversion problems at upper and down viewing direction. TN-LCDs have the function of switching between the wide viewing mode and narrow viewing angle mode using two tilted LC layers. Tilt angles of the two LC layers, $14^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ were required in both wide viewing angle and narrow viewing angle modes, respectively. Consequently, this device is compatible with two image performances of which the wide viewing angle mode and Narrow viewing angle mode.
