Most liquid crystal display modes, including the twisted nematic (TN) $mode^1$, the in-plane switching (IPS) $mode^2$, the fringe field switching (FFS) $mode^3$, and the vertically aligned (VA) $mode^4$ are based on either a horizontal or a vertical alignment. However, for some applications, such as no-bias-bend (NBB) pi cell or bistable bend-splay display, an intermediate pretilt angle is essential$^5$. NBB pi cells have been a focus of interest because of their fast response time; however, the reliable control of the intermediate pretilt angle of liquid crystals that is required for the fabrication of NBB pi cells is challenging. The controllable pre-tilt angle of liquid crystals was investigated using a blend of horizontal and vertical polyimide prepared by a rubbing method. Various pretilt angles in the range from 0^{\circ}$ to 90^{\circ}$ were achieved as a function of the vertical polyimide content. We observed uniform liquid crystal alignment on the rubbing-treated blended polyimide layer. A NBB pi cell with an intermediate pretilt angle of 47.8^{\circ}$ was manufactured. This cell had no initial bias voltage and a low threshold voltage, which indicates that it has low power consumption. In addition, the response time of the NBB pi cell was rapid.

The present study proposes an angle droop controller for converter interfaced (dispatchable) distributed generation (DG) resources in the islanded mode of operation. Due to the necessity of proper real and reactive power sharing between different types of resources in microgrids and the ability of systems to respond properly to abnormal conditions (sudden load changes, load uncertainty, load current disturbances, transient conditions, etc.), it is necessary to produce appropriate references for all of the mentioned above conditions. The proposed control strategy utilizes a current controller in addition to an angle droop controller in the discrete time domain to generate appropriate responses under transient conditions. Furthermore, to reduce the harmonics caused by switching at converters' output, a LCL filter is used. In addition, a comparison is done on the effects that LCL filters and L filters have on the performance of DG units. The performance of the proposed control strategy is demonstrated for multi islanded grids with various types of loads and conditions through simulation studies in the DigSilent Power Factory software environment.
The torque of SRM depends on the level of phase current and the derivative of phase inductance. But the phase inductance of SRM is not linearly changed according to rotor position angle because of saturation in magnetic circuit. Therefor it is difficult to control the desired torque. This paper proposes a model of control system for high efficiency drive of SRM. The GA-Neural Network is used to simulate the reasonable switching angle which is nonlinearly varied with rotor speed and load.
This paper proposes a novel control method to minimize conduction losses of dual active bridge (DAB) converters for on-board chargers of electric vehicles (EVs). In the control method, two variables are regulated, which are the phase-shift angle between the primary and secondary full bridges and the switching frequency. From time-domain analysis, an optimal phase-shift angle is derived to achieve the minimum RMS value of the transformer current. The proposed method was implemented for a 3.6-kW SiC-based prototype to validate its effectiveness. A high efficiency over 97.3% has been achieved for a wide output voltage range.
In this paper a cycloconverter-type high frequency transformer link inverter with a reduced switch count is analyzed and designed. The proposed topology consists of an H-bridge inverter at the transformer's primary side and a cycloconverter with three bidirectional switches at the secondary. All of the switches of the cycloconverter operate in non-resonant zero voltage and zero current switching modes. To overcome a high voltage surge problem resulting from the transformer leakage inductance, phase angle control based on natural commutation is employed. The effectiveness of the proposed inverter is verified by constructing s 750W prototype. Experimentally, the inverter is able to supply a near sinusoidal output voltage with a total harmonic distortion of less than 1%. For comparison, a PSpice simulation of the inverter is also carried out. It was found that the experimental results are in very close agreement with the simulation.
We propose pulsed $CO_2$ laser below 30W by the AC(60Hz) switching control of leakage transformer primary which has some advantage of cost and size compared to a typical pulsed power supply. Pulse repetition rate is adjusted from 5Hz to 60Hz to control laser output. In this laser, a low voltage open loop control for high voltage discharge circuit is employed to avoid the HV sampling or switching and high voltage leakage transformer is used to convert rectified low voltage pulse to high voltage one. A ZCS(Zero Cross Switch) circuit and a PIC one-chip microprocessor are used to control gate signal of SCR precisely. The pulse repetition rate is limited by 60Hz due to the frequency of AC line and a high leakage inductance. The maximum laser output was obtained about 23W at pulse repetition rate of 60Hz, total gas mixture of $CO_{2}/N_{2}$/He = 1/9/15, SCR gate trigger angle 90$^{\circ}$, and total pressure of 18Torr.

As a Basic study to implement a wide-band photonic switching sysetm, we proposed a scheme of free-space-division-multiplexed photonic switching based on a holographic interconnectio method and carried out simple experiments on it. First, we recorded holgraphic interconnection element array for nonblocking optical interconnections. Just a single stage of the array realizes full optical interconnections between NN${\times}$NN input prots and NN${\times}$NN output ports in 3-D space. Next, in reading of the array for optical internnections, we showed that the zeroth-order diffacted beam could be eliminated in the output port by introducing a right angle prism. The elimination of the zeroth-order diffracted beam reduces optical noise in the output ports and provides conveniences of interconnection control in our scheme. Finally, from the experiments on ON-OFF switching of the optical interconnection paths one by one using a spatial (display of the liquid crystal telecision), we showed the feasibility of photonic wsitching based on the holographic interconnection method. We also estimated approximately the maximum interconnectio scale that can be realized without difficulty with current optical devices.

A switched reluctance generator(SRG) has simple magnetic structure, and needs simple power electronic driving circuit. But, a SRG are no windings or permanent magnets on the rotor, and there are concentrated windings placed around each salient pole on the stator. Because of the characteristics of time-sharing excitation, the control of SRG is very flexible. And there are several parameters for controlling SRG, such as switch turn-on angle, switch turn-off angle, and exciting voltage and controlling mode, all these will affect the generation greatly. A SRG has positive torque at increasing inductance region and negative torque at decreasing inductance region. In this paper, we studied characteristics about the switch turn-on and off angles according to switch method for constant output voltage of the fixed speed SRG. It is the acoustic noise and torque ripple characteristics. Characteristics for a switch angle and method are presented by experiment using a 50W SRG with 12/8 poles.

Mostly, phase control method is used to control the single phase AC power. The phase control method has some advantages such as ease to control and simple configuration. But the retardation of firing angle causes a lagging current even if load is purely resistive. So phase control causes a lagging power factor and a low efficiency at the input side in comparing with the system without switching device. A new PWM control method which can improve these defects for single phase AC power control circuit is proposed in this paper. The performances of the single phase AC power control circuit using the proposed method was investigated theoretically. Both power factor and waveform of load current can be improved better than those of the conventional methods.

A torque control method of a switched reluctance motor for the position control of a tank gun is presented. One of the widely used torque control scheme, torque sharing function method, is investigated and a new torque sharing function method is proposed that extends the definition region of the conventional TSF to both the positive and negative torque production regions. By using this definition, all kinds of the control inputs that consider switching on/off angle control as well as the current profiling can be described. A parametrized representation of the current profiles is proposed by using a series of B-spline functions, which reduces memory requirement and enables additional controllers. Optimal determination of the TSFs are also investigated for various control objectives. Moreover, the comparison study of each objective is presented. Since this method generalizes all of the possible control input, the current and torque profiles obtained from the optimization are the most suitable control input that satisfy the objectives.
