Microorganisms causing bovine mastitis, swine diarrhea and swine pneumonia were isolated from farms in Chungbuk and Kyunggi Province and the isolates were identified using microbial identification system(MIS). The most common isolates from bovine mastitis were Staphylococcus sp.,Streptococcus sp., and Corynebacterium sp., those from swine diarrhea were Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp., and Clostridium perfringens, those from swine pneumonia were Bordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida. Examination of 16 antibiotics against these pathogens revealed that the incidence of antibiotic-resistant microoganisms were very high and that many of these isolates had multiple resistance to various commercially available antibiotics such as penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, streptomycin, norfloxacin, and tetracycline. These results suggest that the use of antibiotics in a farm should be controlled in order to decrease the number of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms were very high and that many of these isolates had multiple resistance to various commercially available antibiotics such as penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, streptomycin, norfloxacin, and tetracycline. Clostridium perfringens strains were isolated from swine diarrhea in Korea. Three out of nineteen (15.8%) isolates of C. perfringens were found to be enterotoxigenic by PCR analysis. PCR-based genotyping of the three enterotoxigenic isolates of C. perfringens revealed that they were types A, C and D, respectively. These results suggest that various types of enterotoxigenic C. perfringens can cause swine diarrhea, and that the presence of enterotoxigenic type A strain, known to be strongly associated with food poisoning, may cause public health problem in Korea.
A field trial of norfloxacin on bovine 206, swine 222 and poultry 205 with respiratory diseases and diarrhea was conducted from Sept 1, 1990 to Jan 30, 1991 in Inchon and Kyonggi-do. The results are as follows. 1. Guinea pigs and rabbits were dosages 10 and 20 times normal. Ten days of observation saw no side effect. 2. Oral treatment on bovine, swine and poultry showed a curing rate of 82.00∼89.06%(Mean 86.00%), compared with 87.27∼96.36%(Mean 92.24%) by Injection. 3. The curing rate was 81.92% by the fourth treatment. 4. The curing rate with and without the use of adjuvant was 80.00∼100% and 83.60∼93. 10%, respectively, for swine, and 81.82∼100% and 82.00∼97.14% for bovine. 5. The curing rate was more dependent on seriousness of illness, environment and time than age. 6. The main disease causing bacteria of bovine respiratory diseases: Haemolytic Sta 27.62%, Haemolytic Str 33.33%, sum of this bacteria is 60.95%, diarrhea: Haemolytic coliform 80.20%, swine respiratory diseases; Haemophilus Spp 20.95%, Haemolytic Sta 72%, Haemolytic Str 21.90%, Sum of these bacteria is 68.57%, diarrhea; Haemolytic coliform 57.26%, poultry respiratory diseases; mycoplasma Spp 29.52%, Haemolytic Sta 13.33%, Sum of this bacteria is 42.85%, diarrhea; Haemolytic coliform 53.00%. 7. The curing rate of norfloxacin by species of strain, the unidentified bacteria on bovine respiratory diseases was the lowest with 77.78%, the others ranged from 84.21% to 100% with most of them over 90%. 8. The loss of clinical sign on bovine and swine was the highest when after 2∼4 application. 9. In terms of antibiotic sensitivity test, norfloxacin was the highest with 84.62∼100% (mean 90.09%) among eight bacterias, only 5 of 15 antibiotics had a sensitivity of over 56.25%, showing a high degree of tolerance.
Piglets' diarrhea is one of the major causes of economic loss in Korean swine industry. To prevent this serious and persistant problem, we have developed systemic farm evaluation and analysis program. The program consists of the checklist and the computerized program. The items of the checklist are selected on the basis of various causative factors related with the piglets' diarrhea including sanitational status, nutritional management, or farm environment. The checklist is composed of 30 items including 6 factors on facility, 8 factors on environment, 6 factors on nutrition and 10 factors on sanitation, respectively. Minimum 1 to maximum 10 points was assigned to each item depending on level or status of farm. The scores calculated by sum of points obtained from each item could find out the problems which the farm was confronted with. To investigate the applicability of a program 150 swine farms raising over 500 heads were selected from 7 provinces throughout the country and surveyed. There were significant correlations between the piglets' diarrhea and the scores of the checklist. Based on above results we revised the checklist which consisted of 22 items including 5 factors on facility, 7 factors on environment, 3 factors on nutrition and 7 factors on sanitation. After that we composed a computerized diagram out of each point of an item which showed and indicated weak factors to be improved promptly. Our present study suggested that this newly established swine farm evaluation program would be a very efficient way to find out the problems and support the systemic control program of the piglets' diarrhea for swine farms.
The swine leukocyte antigen (SLA)-DRA locus is noteworthy among other SLA class II loci for its limited variation and has not been investigated in depth. This study was investigated to detect polymorphisms of four exons of SLA-DRA gene and its association with piglet diarrhea in Landrace, Large White and Duroc pigs. No polymorphisms were detected in exon 3, while 2 SNPs (c.178G>A and c.211T>C), 2 SNPs (c.3093A>C and c.3104C>T) and 5 SNPs (c.4167A>G, c.4184A>G, c.4194A>G, c.4246A>G and c.4293G>A) were detected in exon 1, exon 2 and exon 4 respectively, and 1 SNP (c.4081T>C) in intron 3. Statistical results showed that genotype had significant effect on piglet diarrhea, individuals with genotype BC had a higher diarrhea score when compared with the genotypes AA, AB, AC and CC. Futhermore, genotype AC had a higher diarrhea score than the genotype CC in exon 1 (p<0.05); diarrhea scores of genotype AA and BB were higher than those of genotypes AC and CC in exon 2 (p<0.05); individuals with genotype AA had a higher diarrhea score than individuals with genotype AB and BB in exon 4 (p<0.05). Fourteen common haplotypes were founded by haplotype constructing of all SNPs in the three exons, its association with piglet diarrhea appeared that Hap2, 5, 8, 10, and 14 may be the susceptible haplotypes and Hap9 may be the resistant haplotype to piglet diarrhea. The genetic variations identified of the SLA-DRA gene may potentially be functional mutations related to piglet diarrhea.
The swine leukocyte antigen class II molecules are possibly associated with the induction of protective immunity. The study described here was to investigate the relationship between polymorphisms in exon 2 of the swine DQA gene and piglet diarrhea. This study was carried out on 425 suckling piglets from three purebred pig strains (Large White, Landrace and Duroc). The genetic diversity of exon 2 in swine DQA was detected by PCR-SSCP and sequencing analysis, eight unique SSCP patterns (AB, BB, BC, CC, CD, BD, BE and DD) representing five specific allele (A to E) sequences were detected. Sequence analysis revealed 21 nucleotide variable sites and resulting in 12 amino acid substitutions in the populations. A moderate level polymorphism and significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium of the genotypes distribution were observed in the populations (p<0.01). The association analysis indicated that there was a statistically significant difference in the score of piglet diarrhea between different genotypes, individuals with genotype CC showed a lower diarrhea score than genotypes AB ($0.98{\pm}0.09$), BB ($0.85{\pm}0.77$) and BC ($1.25{\pm}0.23$) (p<0.05), and significantly low than genotype BE ($1.19{\pm}0.19$) (p<0.01), CC genotype may be a most resistance genotype for piglet diarrhea.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli is a major cause of diarrhea in neonatal and post-weaning piglets. To determine the most common fimbrial antigens of ETEC in piglets with diarrhea, two investigations were carried out on intensive pig farms in Hubei province, central China. In 2002-2003, 227 fecal samples from neonatal and post-weaning piglets with diarrhea were tested for the presence of the fimbrial antigen K88 and K99 of ETEC by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Twenty-three (10.1%) of 227 fecal samples were found to contain fimbrial antigen K88, which was identified as K88ac variant; and 13 (5.7%) samples containing K99. In 2004, another 179 fecal samples from diarrheic piglets, 1 day to 6 weeks of age, were tested for prevalence of fimbrial antigen K88, K99 and 987P. Forty-seven (26.3%) of the 179 samples carried at least one of the ETEC fimbrial antigens. K88 antigen was detected in 20.1%. In the 36 samples known to carry fimbrial antigen K88, 32 (88.9%) contained K88ad; and 4 (11.1%) contained K88ac; none of them carried K88ab. Fimbrial antigens K99 and 987P were detected in 1.1% and 6.1%, respectively. Our data indicate that K88 is the most common fimbrial antigen of ETEC associated with diarrhea in piglets in Central China.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) strains responsible for recent outbreaks in the United States have been occurring in Mainland Korea since late 2013. Over the past 10 years, PEDV outbreaks have not been reported on Jeju Island. However, in late March of 2014, PEDV re-emerged on Jeju Island and was found to be genetically identical to PEDV strains currently circulating in Mainland Korea. The present study was conducted to provide a better understanding of the epidemiology of PEDV and more effective preventive measures against PED.
I suis cocciosis in piglets seems to occur in the majority of Korean sow herds. Cocci야osis is characterized by a pasty diarrhea in piglets appearing at 5 to 11 days old. Morbidity is variable, Mortality is usually low but piglets growth is always retarded. And, the principal source of infection is the environment because of the high resistance of oocysts. Control of coccidiosis is usually frustrated since the majority of treatment have not constant results. Mundt et al(1990) developed a new strategy by administrating toltrazuril as an oral suspension. This new anticoccidial drug reduced clinical signs and mortality. Therefore, we will try to medicate piglets with Baycox(Bay Vi 9142) suspension in a sow herd, having a problem of I suis coccidiosis. The incidences of coccidiosis in suckling piglets in C and D bleeding stock farm were from 28.6 to 42.3 and 21.1~57.9 % during 3 to 21 day-old. The body weights of suckling piglets in treated groups were higher than those of control groups at 11 and 18 day-old. Also, those of C breeding stock firm were higher than those of D farm. The body weight gains of suckling piglet of treated groups were higher than those of control groups. Also, those of C breeding stock firm were higher than those of D farm. There was no dead piglet in all experimental groups. Some atrophic piglets were done away with. In C breeding stock farm, the incidences of diarrhea in treatment groups were significantly lower an those of control groups. Also, the degrees of diarrhea in treated groups were significantly lower than those in control groups. In D breeding stock farm, the incidences of diarrhea in treated groups were a little lower than those in control groups. Also the degrees of diarrhea in treated groups were a little lower than those in control groups. In the treated groups, the incidences and degrees of diarrhea were reduced at the 4th day and increased at the 13th day after treatment. The number of litters excreted oocysts in treated groups wert lower than those in control groups after treatment. Also, the OPG in treated groups were lower than those in control groups. According to above results, the effect of Baycox suspension against swine coccidiosis was very good. If we will treat with Barcox suspension swine coccidiosis in swine stock farms, we can get good effects of the improvement of body weight gains and diarrhea and e reduce of excreted costs in faeces.
