  • Aramid fibers have been widely used as the reinforcement for composites due to their high modulus and strength. Nowadays the safety measures is required to improve the personal protection. The dyeing of aramid fibers is considered to be very difficult and their dyeing mechanism is not well illucidated. Therefore, this study is to establish the dyeing & printing technology for aramid fibers. The effects of swelling agent and neutral salt in the dye bath on the obtained colors were studied. Also dyeing method of aramid fibers depending on dyeing temperature and dye concentration were established. Color fastness of the dyed aramid fabric with cationic dyes were acceptable excluding light fastness.

  • Polishing Processes are widely used in the glass, optical, die and semiconductor industry and are conventionally carried out using abrasive slurry and a polishing pad. But abrasive slurry process has a weak point that is high cost of handling of used slurry and hard controllability of slurry. Recently, some researches have attempted to solve these problems and one method is the development of a fixed abrasive pad. FAP has a couple of advantages including clean environment, lower CoC, easy controllability and higher form accuracy. But FAP also has a weak point that is need of dressing because of glazing and loading. The paper introduces the basic concept and fabrication technique of FAP using hydrophilic polymers with swelling characteristics in water and explains the self-conditioning phenomenon. Experimental results demonstrate to achieve nano surface roughness of soda lime glass for optical application

  • New polymeric hydrogels based on vinyl ethers have been synthesized by the ${\gamma}$-initiated polymerization method. Their physical chemistry and physical mechanical properities have been studied. It has been shown that structure and swelling behavior of the hydrogels can be regulated by the changing of synthesis conditions nature of monomers. Novel stimuli-sensitive polymers have been synthesized by the varying of macrochains hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance. The some biomedical aspects of application of hydrogels in capacity of drain aging polymeric materials in ophthalmology surgery, implants in plastic surgery as well as drug delivery systems have been investigated.

  • Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) is considered as a candidate technology for applications in stationary, transportation as well as electronic power generation purposes. To develop a high performance direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC), a competent electrolyte membrane is needed. The electrolyte membrane should be durable and methanol crossover must be low. One of the approaches to increase the stability of generally used polymer electrolyte membranes such as Nafion against swelling or thermal degradation is to bond it with an inorganic material physically or chemically. In Noritake Company, we have developed a novel method of reinforcing the polymer electrolyte matrix with inorganic fibers. Methanol crossover values measured were significantly lower than the original polymer electrolyte membranes. These fiber reinforced electrolyte membranes (FREM) were used for DMFC study and stable power output values as high 160 mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were measured. The details of the characteristics of the membranes as well as I-V data of fuel cell stacks are detailed in the paper.

  • Acrylate-terminated poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) macromer was prepared by the reaction of PEG with acryloyl chloride. Photopolymerization of PEG macromer resulted in the formation of cross-linked PEG network. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on PEG and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was obtained via template polymerization of AA to the PEG network by UV curing. The swelling degree of the IPNs hydrogel increased with an increase of pH value due to the association-dissociation between carboxylic acid of PAA and either of PEG through hydrogen bounding. The swelling-deswelling behavior proceeded reversibly for the IPNs upon changing pH. Release of indomethacin from the IPNs demonstrated "on-off" regulation with pH fluctuation.

  • Fast-grown wood generally contains a high proportion of juvenile wood that results in inferior dimensional stability and durability against biological deteriorations. In the present research, the Acacia mangium wood from plantation forests in Vietnam was treated with high temperature in air. The effects of heat treatment on physical properties of Acacia mangium wood, including mass loss (ML), water absorption (WA), water-repellent effectiveness (WRE) and anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) were examined. The results showed that the dimensional stability and the water-repellent effectiveness are increased by about 15-46% and 8-18%, respectively. However, the mass and dimension of wood are decreased. The results also indicated that both treatment temperature and treatment duration significantly affect the wood properties of Acacia mangium. It is thus concluded that heat treatment demonstrates an interesting potential to improve the wood quality of Acacia mangium for solid timber products. This technology provides an environmentally safe method of protecting sustainable common woods to give a new generation of value-added biomaterials with increased stability without the use of toxic chemicals.

  • Automobile wiper blades are generally treated with chlorine to lower their friction coefficient with the windshield surface. This treatment could affect the crosslink density measurement of rubber vulcanizates, a material used in windshield wipers, which would consequently alter its chemical and physical properties. Therefore, this study evaluated the influence of chlorination on crosslink density measurements of natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates using a vehicle wiper blade. A method for determining the degree of chlorination was developed where the interaction parameter between the rubber and the swelling solvent was corrected. A decrease in the rubber sample swelling ratio was observed upon chlorination, and the chlorination penetrated less than 1% of the sample thickness. The chlorinated NR was assumed to be chloroprene rubber (CR), which was used to correct the interaction parameter. The results showed the CR contributed approximately 7% to the parameter.

  • Pulsatile swelling behaviors and their application to drug delivery system were studied by using interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) hydrogels constructed with poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid). The PVA/PAAc IPNs hydrogels were symthesized by UV irradiation tallowed by repetitive freezing and thawing method. These hydrogels showed pH and temperature sensitive swelling behaviors. From the release experiment, the release amount of model drug incorporated into these hydrogels showed pulsatile patterns. Permeability coefficients obtained by various solutes differed in response to changes of permeation conditions.

  • In order to assay one lot of the potency of tuberculin for intradermic use, four guinea pigs sensitized with heat killed M. tuberculosis were used by the method originally of the Agriculture Research Service Center(A. R. S.) and Bureau of Animal. Industry(B. A. I.) in the United. States of America in which guinea pigs were used on 21st day after sensitization. There is doubt whether the guinea pigs are sensitized or not. Therefore, this study has taken the method of Middle Brook-Dubos hemagglutination test, and observed the humoral hemagglutinating antibody in the blood. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The maximum titer of hemagglutinating antibody was demonstrated 30days after sensitizing the guinea pigs with killed tubercle bacilli. The maximum titer was continued for a period of 45 days and thereafter declined gradually. 2. The swelling and redness of the region of the sensitized guinea pigs was shown to be reached to the maximum size within 24 hours after intradermal inoculation with HCSM tuberculin and gradually reduced 96 hours after inoculation. The swelling and redness could not be detected by macro-observation after 14 days.

  • Screen printing it one of the most popular methods for the fabrication of catalytic layer in electrode of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to its convenience and adaptability. This paper suggests an improved screen-printing method, which is rather simple suppressing the swelling trouble without additive process and competitive with very low Pt loading in comparison with the previous methods. Particularly, the gasket unified MEA made better performances than the other especially at high current area due to blocking effect on the gas leakage during the operation. These methods give us more simplified and faster fabrication chances.
