De Marke, Dutch Model for Sustainable Dairy Farming (네덜란드 지속 낙농 모델 De Marke)

  • The Netherlands produce more than 11 million tonnes of milk per year, and approximately 60% of the milk is exported. Dutch milk production is five times higher than that of Korea, even though Korea comprises a land area three times greater than the Netherlands. Upscaling and intensification have characterized the Dutch way of dairy farming since 1960, and adverse effects of the intensification of dairy farming became evident from the late 1970s and early 1980s onwards. The transition toward a more sustainable farming system is a central element of the Dutch agenda for the reconstruction of the livestock production sector. The environmental problems in Dutch dairy farming in the 1980s have led to the establishment of the experimental dairy farm "De Marke" which aims at improving the utilization of fertilizers and feeds, through minimizing nutrient requirements, maximizing the use of nutrients in organic manure and homegrown feeds, and through the targeted use of fertilizers and feeds. 85 cows at "De Marke" produce 720 tonnes of milk per year, using 55 ha of pasture in a sustainable manner. That means, 150,000 ha of pasture are required to produce 2 million tonnes of milk, which the current milk production of Korea. It is urgent to provide sufficient pasture for sustainable milk production in Korea, and primarily the transition to pasture of surplus rice paddies, resulting from of a decrease in rice consumption, should be considered.

Reviewing the Assessment of Optimal Yield of Groundwater in Korea

  • The optimal yield is defined as the amount of groundwater that maintains a dynamic equilibrium state of the groundwater system over a long period. We examined the current problems, improvements, and methods for estimating the optimal groundwater yield in Korea, considering sustainable groundwater development. The optimal yield for individual wells and the sustainable yield for the entire groundwater basin were reviewed. Generally, the optimal yield for individual wells can be determined using long-term pumping and step drawdown tests. The optimal yield can be determined by groundwater quantity and quality, economic, and water use rights factors. The optimal yield of individual wells in the groundwater basin must be determined within the total sustainable amount of the entire groundwater basin, such that the optimal yield of a new well must be less than the remaining total sustainable amount, exempting the total optimal yield of the existing wells. Therefore, the optimal yield may be determined based on the estimated optimal yield at least twice per year. In addition, if groundwater level and pumping quantity data for at least one year are available, it may be effective to use the Hill, Harding, and zero groundwater-level change methods to re-estimate the optimal yield.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze influential factors of sustainable consumption behavior in mobile videophone services using TAM(Technology Acceptance Model). The results of data analysis by SPSS 12.0 show that perceived usefulness, perceived easy of use, videophone service quality, concentration, and use of videophone service by acquaintances exert significant influence on continuous use for videophone services. But 'the level of neighbor's videophone possession and use, videophone charge, videophone quality, and privacy' as moderating variables haven't significant influence on extended use.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope energy eco-audit evaluation scheme for the sustainable energy management at schools in accordance with education for sustainable development. Energy eco-audit evaluation scheme was developed through critical review of preexisting evaluation methods, consensus searching for the process from field. The results of this study are as follows. The school energy eco-audit evaluation scheme has three criteria: data collection, energy program, and environmental review. First, criteria of data collection includes general affairs, school building construction, and energy use. Second, criteria of energy program stresses school administration system such as the democratic decision-making process and structures. Third, criteria of environmental review includes reporting process and preparing teaching/learning materials for sustainable energy management. In conclusion, school energy eco-audit evaluation scheme could find a new way to achieve extended effect for sustainable energy management in school. It also could continue to seek opportunities to raise their awareness of energy issue and environment. School committee and whole school are involved to continue to implement present action plan and prepare updated plan in order to reduce environmental impact in school. By doing so, it would be possible to play important role in both school administration and education for sustainable development.

The Development of Planning Model for a Sustainable Housing Estate (지속가능한 주거단지 계획모형 개발)

  • There have been endeavors for sustainable development all over the world after the Rio World Summit and the idea of sustainable development has become common paradigm. Now, Korea has come to a situation where we need to apply the concept of sustainable development inevitably. Especially housing estate development must be preliminary change for sustainable development. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to establish sustainable planning element system of housing estate, and to propose a sustainable planning model compatible with the Korean situation. The scope of this study focused on typical multi-family housing estates in Korea and the environmental sustainable planning model. The model was developed from the evaluation of the important level and extra costs of planning elements for sustainable development of housing estate. The important level of planning principles and elements was analyzed by conducting a survey to experts. As the results of this study, four planning section ('land use and transport', 'pollution and waste', 'energy', and 'natural resource') and twelve planning items were identified. Twenty-one planning principles and fifty-five planning elements were found. Synthetically, the sustainable planning element system is composed of four planning sections, twelve planning items, twenty-one planning principles, and fifty-five planning elements. Based on survey to experts, $\ulcorner$The short-term strategic model$\lrcorner$ was developed for the social implosion of sustainable development, which is composed of ten basic elements, eighteen necessary elements, twelve optional elements, and seven arbitrary elements. $\ulcorner$The long-term future model$\lrcorner$was developed for application to from 10 to 15 years later. It is composed of fifteen basic elements, thirty-three necessary elements, and seven optional elements. The planning model proposed by this study can be used as a prototype for the development of a sustainable housing estate and can provide a practical tool for developers and planners who are not familiar with the concept of sustainable development.

Sustainable diets: a scoping review and descriptive study of concept, measurement, and suggested methods for the development of Korean version (지속가능한 식이의 개념과 측정방법 및 한국형 식이 지수 개발을 위한 방안 모색: 주제범위 문헌고찰과 기술 연구)

  • Objectives: Transformation through a sustainable food system to provide healthy diets is essential for enhancing both human and planetary health. This study aimed to explain about sustainable diets and illustrate appropriate measurement of adherence to sustainable diets using a pre-existing index. Methods: For literature review, we used PubMed and Google Scholar databases by combining the search terms "development," "validation," "sustainable diet," "sustainable diet index," "planetary healthy diet," "EAT-Lancet diet," and "EAT-Lancet reference diet." For data presentation, we used data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2017-2018, among adults aged 20 years and older (n = 3,920). Sustainable Diet Index-US (SDI-US), comprising four sub-indices corresponding to four dimensions of sustainable diets (nutritional quality, environmental impacts, affordability, and sociocultural practices), was calculated using data from 24-hour dietary recall interview, food expenditures, and food choices. A higher SDI-US score indicated greater adherence to sustainable diets (range: 4-20). This study also presented SDI-US scores according to the sociodemographic status. All analyses accounted for a complex survey design. Results: Of 148 papers, 16 were reviewed. Adherence to sustainable diets fell into 3 categories: EAT-Lancet reference diet-based (n = 8), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) definition-based (n = 4), and no specific guidelines but including the sustainability concept (n = 4). Importantly, FAO definition emphasizes on equal importance of four dimensions of diet (nutrition and health, economic, social and cultural, and environmental). The mean SDI-US score was 13 out of 20 points, and was higher in older, female, and highly educated adults than in their counterparts. Conclusions: This study highlighted that sustainable diets should be assessed using a multidimensional approach because of their complex nature. Currently, SDI can be a good option for operationalizing multidimensional sustainable diets. It is necessary to develop a Korean version of SDI through additional data collection, including environmental impact of food, food price, food budget, and use of ready-made products.

  • New buildings are to be needed for an aging society. But, there may be a solution on the multi-purpose & mixed-use existing facilities. Therefore this study is focused on verification of mixed-use school facilities's potentialities. If possible, I want to suggest some directions of renewal primary school planning. The results of this study are as follows : 1) It is important to make a policy for improving the educational environment, 2) Future buildings must be planned by the principles based on the lifelong learning, 3) Mixed-use building blocks need to be laid out by the concept of accessibility, 4) We can use existing primary school's areas as a elderly welfare facilities without any renovation and increasing areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest improvement plans of School Green Building Certification System by comparing items of domestic system with those of foreign system. Especially, we focused on school use classification. Use classification of Green Building Certification System must be based on Building Codes and reflect the nature of building use and size. Schools are divided into three groups ; preschool, school(elementary, junior high school, high school), university and ect. Also they must be set up assessment method reflecting the nature of school use and size.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a strategy of creating sustainable city's streets by extracting a elements related the task related with society, economic, and environment. The method of this study is as follows. First step, we extract main task for developing sustainable settlements through studying literature review. Second step, based on the task for sustainable settlements, we generate various elements for developing sustainable street environments. Third step, we carry out a survey targeting experts related to field of urban environment. Fourth step, we analyze their priority about developing elements and the difference between groups. Last step, through correlation analysis between three task and elements for developing sustainable streets, we discuss the specific application around developing elements. The result of this study is as follows. Firstly, from a social point of view, the task related to connecting of historical and cultural characteristic is the most important thing. In a environmental view, it illustrates that application of technologies based on IT is more important than use of sustainable land. In a economic paint of view, it presents that the elements of city security & disasters are important.

  • The study aims to analyze the theoretical background of the economic growth and sustainable development; systematization of scientists view on monitoring and economic and innovative evaluation, analysis and diagnosis of factors affecting these processes. Rating characteristics of the level of innovative resources development obtained based on the comparative analysis of Kazakhstan regions. Calculations were done based on official statistics during 2010 and 2015-2017. Based on obtained data there has been grading of the country regions and their ratings were determined by the level of development of innovative resources. This research identifies areas and mechanisms to ensure balanced sustainable development of the national economy. The findings suggest that sustainable development of the state is affected by the innovative activity of the regions, the sustainable development of which is ensured by innovative enterprises. Transition to the model of sustainable territorial development involves the formation of such conditions and the use of mechanisms under which the natural base of this development is not destroyed, the environment suitable for human existence is preserved and reproduced. The findings of this research support for pursuing a national policy of reducing regional imbalances, and promoting a more balanced and sustainable development of the whole country.
