  • During high speed economic growth period in Korea, our society has focused it's energy on the economic and social development based on the strategy of demolition and destruction of all our natural and man-made environment. In progress with that trend, our small cities in Korea also have just followed the metropolitan physical development pattern and considered that imitation of those metropolitan cities' or western cities' changes be the same meaning of "modernization". Therefore, our valuable urban and architectural heritages have been constantly destructed and that situation has been same in Anseong. Now in the new trend of environmentally sustainable urban design and at the new millenium period, we have to focus our attention on the retaining strategy of city's historicity as a city planner or an architect, and the first step for this strategy shall be to clarify the transition process of urban structure, especially of C.B.D. area of small cities since pre-industrial period.

This study is to establish the environmental sustainability principles, based on the concept of ESSD, and to develop the evaluation model of environmental sustainability for korean rural housing estates. A sustainability indices system, which is composed of 5 principles, 16 categories, an 37 estimation items, was finally established. Five principles of environmental sustainability for rural housing estate were. 'Sustainable Land Use', 'Interdependence of Men and Nature', 'Ecological Principles and Diversity', 'Efficient use of Energy and Recycling', and ' Minimizing Environmental Pollution'. And weighting values of each indicators, such as estimation items, categories, and principles, were estimated, based on the result of AHP etc. The questinnaire survey was conducted for experts of four related major fields. • With the increase in the demand for sustainable and environment-friendly development all over the world, it becomes an urgent issue for Korea to reduce $CO_2$ emission. Since building industry accounts for about 40% of international energy and resource consumption and $30{\sim}40%$ of $CO_2$ emission, it is essential to prepare for energy-efficient building. This study aims to seek for improvement direction for a domestic Building Energy Efficiency Rating System through the comparison with foreign systems. Two foreign building energy rating systems which have the similar application scope with domestic one, HERS(Home Energy Rating System) and SAP(Standard Assessment Procedure)2005 were selected. As compared with foreign systems, we intended to suggest improvement direction for effective application of Building Energy Efficiency Rating System in Korea.

  • After the 1884 Home Insurance building in Chicago and 1889 Tower building in New York, 15 Park Row became the tallest building in the USA in 1899 and it held this record for nine years. Completed just before the arrival of the 20th century, this building deserves to be recognized for the sophistication of its architecture with respect to contextual understanding of the 19th century historic texture in Lower Manhattan, its uniquely economical floor plans, and its use of natural ventilation and daylight. The compositional techniques using the proportional analysis of its context reflect the highest level of architectural education of its time by its architect Robert H. Robinson. In addition, it also offers a unique glimpse to the state-of-the-art technology of its time regarding its structure, its use of movement systems that was capable of serving 4000 users.

Therefore instead of putting emphasis on promoting tourist business for short-term revenue, it will be under control to raise the standard of living and to be not forfeited and diluted the rights for sustainable slow city's status. Participation of resident needs in this process. Accordingly it need a strategy of landscape formation design and a interdepartmental practice system for a continuous slow city's image by renewal of disharmonious townscape in the built-up area.
