AC 플라즈마 디스플레이패널의 방전개시전압에 모델과 실험의 비교에 관한 연구 (Comparision Study Between Modeling and Experiment of the Breakdown Voltage for AC Plasma Display Panel)

  • Breakdown voltage model and expertiments are compared for discharge cells of AC plasma display panel. In the model, discharge paths are assumed to be initial electric field lines and the one-dimensional continuity equation is applied to the charged particle transport at each field line. The comparisons are performed in the wide range of gas pressure (50-600torr), Xe partial pressure over total pressure (1-6%), sustain electrode gap(100-1000$\mu\textrm{m}$), wall height(130, 300$\mu\textrm{m}$), and voltage pulse width(2-6${\mu}$s). The presented breakdown voltage model well agree with experiments in the above wide range. The increase of breakdown voltage with the decrease of the width(L) of protruding electrode is also described by the model.

  • In this paper, a new energy recovery circuit for AC PDP(Plasma Display Panel) is proposed to decrease a sustain voltage and voltage stress on switching elements. In the proposed circuit, two auxiliary capacitors are connected directly to the power source through switching elements and inductors when ground potential is supplied to the panel. Therefore, the voltage across auxiliary capacitors can be increased by turns over the half of the source voltage. Because the intrinsic capacitance of PDP is charged sufficiently from the auxiliary capacitors, the level of sustain voltage and the voltage stress on the switching devices are decreased. To verify the validity of the proposed energy recovery circuit, computer simulations using PSpice program are carried out.

  • The relationships between discharge characteristics and sustain electrode shape are studied in AC PDP by calculating the electric field and measuring discharge voltage, luminance and current. The maximum electric field is obtained for the triangle shape electrode. It is 1.8 times larger than uniform electric field type. It has been shown thatthe firing voltage is largely affected by the degree of electric field concentration. But, as the difference of the maximum and minimum value of electric field in a cell increases, the luminance and luminance efficiency decrease. And, the charge variation during discharge is proportional to the area of electrode.

  • In this paper, we propose a newly developed selective reset waveform of a ac PDP using the wide erase pulse technique with the control of address bias voltage. Although it is generally understood that the wide pulse erasing methode shows the narrow driving margin in an opposite discharge type ac PDP, we could obtain a moderate driving margin in a 3-electrode surface discharge type ac PDP. The obtained driving margin shows a strong dependency on the sustain voltage and the address bias voltage. The lower the sustain and the address bias voltage, the wider the driving margin. The pulse width of the proposed waveform is only $10{\mu}s$, which gives additional time to the sustain period, hence increases the brightness. The brightness and contrast ratio increase about 20% together comparing to the conventional ramp type selective reset waveform with the driving scheme of 10 subfield ADS method. The driving margin was measured with the line by line addressed pattern on the white test panel of 2inch diagonal size and the discharge gas was Ne+Xe4%, 400torr.

  • 본 논문에서는 TERES(TEchnology of REciprocal Sustainer)회로와 같은 유지구동전압 저감형 구동회로의 성능을 개선하기 위해 새로운 AC PDP용 에너지 회수회로를 제안하였다. TERES회로에서는 유지구동전압이 일반적인 AC PDP용 구동회로의 절반이지만 에너지 회수회로가 없다. 제안한 회로에서는 에너지 회수회로를 설치하여 효율을 높이고 ZVS 또는 ZCS의 구현으로 스위칭소자의 손실을 줄인다. 에너지 회수회로가 추가되었음에도 불구하고 제안한 회로의 능동스위칭 소자 수가 TERES회로와 동일하다. 제안한 회로의 동작을 모드별로 해석하였으며 시뮬레이션과 실험을 통하여 유용성을 입증하였다.

  • The address and sustain discharge characteristics in plasma display panels (PDPs) are investigated and compared by the optical emission spectroscopy using the ICCD and Vt close-curve analysis. The observations on the xenon (Xe) emission show that the spatial and temporal evolutions in the first sustain discharge are quite different from those in the address and the other sustain discharges. The striation found in the conventional sustain discharge doesn't occur in the first sustain discharge. These different discharge behaviors are explained by employing the Vt close-curve.

Influence of Sustain Pulse-width on Electrical Characteristics and Luminous Efficiency in Surface Discharge of AC-PDP

  • Influences of sustain pulse-width on electrical characteristics and luminous efficiency are experimentally investigated for surface discharge of AC-PDP. A square pulse with variable duty ratio and fixed rising time of 300 ns has been used in the experiment. It is found that the memory coefficient is significantly increased at the critical pulse-width. And the wall charges and wall voltages as well as capacitances are experimentally measured by Q- V analysis method along with the voltage margin relation, in terms of the sustain pulse-width in the range of $1{\mu}s$ to $5{\mu}s$ under driving frequency of 10 kHz to 180 kHz. And the luminous efficiency is also experimentally investigated in above range of sustain pulse-width with driving frequency of 10 kHz to 180 kHz. It is noted that the luminous efficiency for 10 kHz and 180 kHz are 1.29 1m/W and 0.68 1m/W respectively, since the power consumption for 10 kHz is much less than that for 180 kHz. It has been concluded that the optimal sustain pulse-width is in the range of $2.5 {\~}4.5{\mu}s$ under driving frequency range of 10 kHz and 60 kHz, and in the range of $1.5 {\~} 2.5{\mu}s$ under driving frequency range of 120 kHz and 180 kHz based on observation of memory coefficient, and wall voltage as well as luminous efficiency.

  • The discharge characteristics of AC plasma display were investigated as a function of the voltage and the frequency of the pulses applied to the address electrode during sustain period. The maximum sustain voltage of display cell decreased with increasing the frequency of the pulses applied to the address electrode during sustain period. Applying the pulses to the address electrode resulted in improvement of luminance and luminous efficiency at the same time.

A Modified Ramp Reset Waveform for High Contrast Ratio in AC PDPs

  • In general, the background light that is produced during the reset period deteriorates the dark room contrast ratio in AC PDP. In this paper, we propose a modified ramp reset pulse that can reduce the background light to an imperceptible level. In the new reset waveform, the discharges between the scan and sustain electrodes are minimized by applying a positive bias voltage to the sustain electrode and only the weak discharges between the scan and address electrodes are found to occur during the reset period. We also adopted the MgO coated phosphor layer to improve the address voltage margin that was reduced when the bias voltage in the modified ramp reset waveform was applied. As a result, the address voltage margin of 45 V which is the same level of the conventional method was ortained and the dark room contrast ratio was improved up to 7500 : 1.

  • One of the most important issues in AC PDP is the improvement of luminous efficiency. One possible method is to develop new sustain electrode shape showing high luminous efficiency. In this study, a new electrode shapehas a bridge is proposed in order to solve this problem. The experimental results show that the test panel with the suggested new electrode shape shows high luminance efficiency by 35.35% and low sustain voltage by 17V compared with the conventional structure.
