  • This study was conducted to evaluate the ability of anion generating air cleaner to remove gases, vapor and particles from closed room contaminated with environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). The measurements covered particle sizes of 13.8-542.5nm, particle concentration, surface area, volumes UVPM, FPM, solanesol, and the following gases and vapor; carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nicotine, and 3-ethenylpyridine. Tobacco smoke was generated and mixed in a closed room in which the airflow rates were in the range of 0.00-0.04 m/s. The anion generating air cleaner was startedl and the decay rates for the gases, vapor and particles were measured, When the use of anion generating air cleaner, solid components of ETS, such as respirable suspended particle (RSP), utraviolet particulate matter (UVPM, fluorescent particulate matter (FPM) and solanesol was sharply decreased, and vapor phase components of ETS, such as nicotines 3-ethenylpyidine were modelately decreased by time elapse. Even the use of anion generation air cleaner, the decreasing rate of carbon dioxide concentration was similar with control, and the decreasing rate of carbon monoxide was slower than that of control. Our results indicated that the use of anion generting air cleaner had an effect on reduction of solid and vapor components from ETs, but it had no effect on gaseous components of ETS.

  • It has been shown that a nanofluid consisting of nanoparticles dispersed in base fluid has much higher effective thermal conductivity than pure fluid. In this study, four kinds of nanofluids such as multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in water, CuO in water, SiO2in water, and CuO in ethylene glycol, are produced. Their thermal conductivities are measured by a transient hot-wire method. The thermal conductivity of water-based MWCNT nanofluid is shown to be increased by up to 11.3% at a volume fraction of 0.01. The measured thermal conductivities of MWCNT nanofluids are higher than those calculated with Hamilton-Crosser's model due to neglecting solid-liquid interaction at the interface. The results show that the thermal conductivity enhancement of nanofluids depends on the thermal conductivities of both particles and the base fluid. Stability of nanofluids is estimated by UV-vis spectrum analysis. Stability of nanofluid depends on the type of base fluid and the suspended particles. Also it can be improved in addition of a surfactant.

  • We studied airborne contaminants (airborne particulates and odorous compounds) emitted from compost facilities in South Korea. There are primarily two different types of composting systems operating in Korean farms, namely mechanical aerated pile composting (MAPC) and aerated static pile composting (SAPC). In this study, we analyzed various particulate matters (PM10, PM7, PM2.5, PM1, and total suspended particles), volatile organic compounds and ammonia, and correlated these airborne contaminants with microclimatic parameters, i.e., temperature and relative humidity. Most of the analyzed airborne particulates (PM7, PM2.5, and PM1) were detected in high concentration at SAPC facilities compered to MAPC; however these differences were statistically non-significant. Similarly, most of the odorants did not vary significantly between MAPC and SAPC facilities, except for dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and skatole. DMS concentrations were significantly higher in MAPC facilities, whereas skatole concentrations were significantly higher in SAPC facilities. The microclimate variables also did not vary significantly between MAPC and SAPC facilities, and did not correlate significantly with most of the airborne particles and odorous compounds, suggesting that microclimate variables did not influence their emission from compost facilities. These findings provide insight into the airborne contaminants that are emitted from compost facilities and the two different types of composting agitation systems.

  • Usually, flow mediation earth and settling pond etc. of processing plant to handle water or wastewater. Mediation is the wastewater that flowed past settling pond than material of heavy particles, water weight colloid particles that big solids are removed but are suspensibility material settlement exclusion impossible. So, we need flocculation and coagulation action to remove materials from this colloid state. Flocculation and coagulation by addition of chemical agents forms floc settle size. That is, shorten the sedimentation time and quality of processing water because promoting sedimentation doing to do fines or suspended solids and colloid can materials large size and also, flocculation to annex efficiency of filtration augment. Therefore, I executed this research to prove that COD efficiency for wastewater by using inorganic coagulant.

  • Visibility is a good indicator of comprehensive alto quality. The prevailing visibility in Seoul is no better than the past although the average concentration of SO2 and TSP (total suspended particulate) has decreased quite significantly in the past decade, owing to the government efforts to reduce the emission. Then, a question arises why visibility has not been improved. In order to answer this question we have investigated which components of air pollutants are most responsible for the visibility degradation in Seoul. Analysis on the visibility vs the aerosol sixte distribution measured by an optical particle counter shows that the particles of the size interval between 0.5mm and 2.5mm are most responsible for the visibility degradation. Among the criteria air Pollutants, NOB concentration is found to be moot responsible, rather than PM10. ton analysis of the particulate collected by a high volume sampler shows that the nitrate component increases more significantly than other ions when visibility becomes very poor. Therefore, we conclude that the major causes of visibility degradation in Seoul are the increase of NOB, nitrates and the particles of the size range between 0.5mm and 2.5mm.

  • ZPP (Zirconium-Potassium Perchlorate) is type of primary charge initiators for PMD (Pyrotechnic Mechanical Device) system. The binder component dissolved in the solvent is precipitated to suspended particles in the granules. The LabRAM Mixer uses resonance phenomenon to transfer energy, unlike blade equipment that utilizes mechanical contact. In this study, the properties of the particles prepared by the LabRAM Mixer were evaluated with the changes of the conditions.

  • It has been observed that water, which is absolutely essential for enzyme activity, can induce the agglomeration of enzyme particles in organic media. Although enzyme agglomeration is significant in that it usually reduces enzyme activity and stability, little attention has been paid to the quantitative analysis of enzyme agglomeration behavior in nonaqueous biocatalytic systems. In this study, the effect of water and silica gel on enzyme agglomeration were investigated using Candida rugosa lipase and cyclohexane as a model enzyme and an organic medium. The extent of enzyme agglomeration was quantified by sieve analysis of freeze-dried agglomerates. Increasing the water content of the medium increased the size of the enzyme agglomerates, and it was found that water produced during the esterification reaction could also promote the agglomeration of enzyme particles suspended in organic media. On the other hand, the size of the enzyme agglomerates was remarkably reduced in the presence of silica gel at the same water content. We also show that this increase in the size of enzyme agglomerates results in lower reaction rates in organic solvents.

  • The mass fraction of PM10 had a bimodal distribution in the middle of between 2.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and the average mass fraction of particles less than 2.1~3.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was 54.1% for Pb and 890.8 ng/㎥ for Fe, respectively. For the concentration of PM10 and metallic elements by seasonal variation, PM10 showed bimodal distribution, while metallic elements showed different distributions by their sources. The ratios of fine particles to total mass were 0.45 for PM10, 0.41 for Cr, and 0.20 for Fe, 0.57 for Zn, 0.68 for Cd and 0.63 for Pb, respectively. That facts indicated that PM10, Zn, Cd, Cr and Pb were from anthropogenic sources, and Fe was from natural source. The geometric means and geometric standard deviations by seasonal variations were 3.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ , 2.31 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in winter, 3.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ , 2.49 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in spring, 2.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ , 2.03 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in summer respectively. And, total efficiency of cascade impactor by seasonal variations were 49.6% in winter, 45.9% in spring and 44.5% in summer.

  • This study examined experimentally the characteristics of the flow pattern and particle suspension in an agitated vessel with a bottom baffle. A flow pattern of the particles was shown to increase the upward flow from the center of the agitated vessel bottom. The suspended particles from the experiment found that the particle suspension was promoted by the development of an Ekman boundary layer. The optimal conditions of the impeller, and the agitated vessel bottom baffle within the experimental range were as follows: Impeller, $n_p=6$, d/D=0.5, and b/d=0.3; and bottom baffle, $n_b=6$, $d_b/D=0.5$ and $b_w/D=0.05$.
