Filter wheel design for CQUEAN II

  • CQUEAN(Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse) has been used at the 2.1 m Otto Struve Telescope of the McDonald Observatory since 2010. This camera is optimized at 0.7 - 1.1 um for the survey of Lyman break of high redshift (z > 5) quasars in the early universe. The current system has a filter wheel consist of seven (g', r', I', z', Y, Iz and Is) broad-band filters. We are upgrading this filter wheel to have 20 narrow band filters, with which we can take spectral energy distributions of targets. The new filter wheel consists of interchangeable cartridges for 50 mm square filters, a speed reducer unit, and a step motor. This new design of the large size filter wheel can be applied to other large format CCD cameras.

Molecular gas content of HI Monsters

  • We present 12CO ($J=1{\rightarrow}0$) observations of a set of local galaxies (0.04 < z < 0.08) with a large cool gas reservoir, dubbed "HI Monsters". The data were obtained using the Redshift Search Receiver (RSR) on the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) 14 m telescope. The sample consists of 20 galaxies with $M_{HI}$ > $3{\times}10^{10}M_{\odot}$ identified by the ALFALFA survey and 8 additional objects with comparable HI mass from a separate LSB galaxy study ($M_{HI}$ > $1.5{\times}10^{10}M_{\odot}$). Our sample selection is purely based on the amount of neutral hydrogen in galaxies, thereby providing a chance to study how atomic and molecular gas relate to each other in these extremely HI-rich systems. We have detected CO in 15 out of 20 ALFALFA selected HI Monsters and 4 out of 8 LSB HI Monsters. We present the global molecular gas properties of the sample and discuss how their molecular gas properties correlate with their star formation activities.

COSMOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS OF MULTIPLY IMAGED GRAVITATIONAL LENS SYSTEMS

  • We now have more than 70 multiple image gravitational lens systems. Since gravitational lensing occurs through gravitational distortions in cosmic space, cosmological informations can be extracted from multiple image systems. Specifically, Hubble constant can be determined by the time delay mea-surement, curvature of the universe can be measured by the distribution of image separations in lens systems, and limits on matter density and cosmological constant can be set by the statistics of gravitationallens systems. Uncertainties, however, still exist in various steps, and results may be taken with some caution. Larger systematic survey and better understanding of galaxy properties would definitely help.

Chemical Properties of Star Forming Galaxies in the Cluster Environment

  • We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopic data of ~340 star forming galaxies in the Virgo cluster to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. The chemical evolution of galaxies is linked to their star formation histories (SFHs), as well as to the gas interchange in different environments. In this sense, galaxy metallicity could be an observable parameter providing information on the impact of the environment on the galaxy SFH and/or the galaxy gas content. Thus, we derived gaseous metallicity (e.g., oxygen abundance) of star forming galaxies located in different regions of the Virgo cluster using well-known empirical calibrations. We also estimated their star formation rate (SFR) using H alpha luminosity. Inorder to investigate the chemical properties of these galaxies, we examined relations between various parameters: metallicity vs. luminosity, SFR vs. luminosity, and metallicity vs. cluster-centric radius. From our results, we discuss environmental effects of cluster to the chemical properties of star forming galaxies.

A Pilot Study for CO of BUDHIES Galaxies

  • The fraction of blue galaxies in clusters is found to dramatically increase with redshift. This trend has been known as the Butcher-Oemler (B-O) effect which implies a significant evolution among the cluster galaxy population with time. It has been proposed that the blue galaxies in B-O clusters are at their last stage of star formation, probably using up the gas, which then might have evolved into red and passive cluster galaxies as found in the Local Universe. To test this hypothesis and ultimately to understand the evolution of cluster galaxy population as a function of redshift, we have embarked a multi-wavelength study of two carefully selected galaxy clusters at z~0.2 where the B-O effect becomes first noticeable. In this talk, I will introduce the Blind Ultra-deep Distant HI Environmental Survey (BUDHIES) on those two clusters and relevant multi-wavelength observations. Also, I will present the preliminary results of our recent Nobeyama CO observations of two galaxies selected among the BUHDIES sample.

X-RAY SOURCES WITH NO COUNTERPARTS IN OTHER WAVELENGTH BANDS

  • In order to identify peculiar X-ray sources, we select 442 sources with no counterparts in other wavelength bands (as of the year 1999) from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog. We cross-correlate this initial list with the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database, the USNO and WISE catalogs, and the HEASARC XRAY Master Catalog. Eventually, we are left with four unidentified sources with no counterparts in other wavelength bands. We present these four sources and their X-ray properties in this paper.

207 NEW OPEN STAR CLUSTERS WITHIN 1 KPC FROM GAIA DATA RELEASE 2

  • We conducted a survey of open clusters within 1 kpc from the Sun using the astrometric and photometric data of the Gaia Data Release 2. We found 655 cluster candidates by visual inspection of the stellar distributions in proper motion space and spatial distributions in l - b space. All of the 655 cluster candidates have a well defined main-sequence except for two candidates if we consider that the main sequence of very young clusters is somewhat broad due to differential extinction. Cross-matching of our 653 open clusters with known open clusters in various catalogs resulted in 207 new open clusters. We present the physical properties of the newly discovered open clusters. The majority of the newly discovered open clusters are of young to intermediate age and have less than ~50 member stars.

PSF Deconvolution on the Integral Field Unit Spectroscopy Data

  • We present the application of the Point Spread Function (PSF) deconvolution method to the astronomical Integral Field Unit (IFU) Spectroscopy data focus on the restoration of the galaxy kinematics. We apply the Lucy-Richardson deconvolution algorithm to the 2D image at each wavelength slice. We make a set of mock IFU data which resemble the IFU observation to the model galaxies with a diverse combination of surface brightness profile, S/N, line-of-sight geometry and Line-Of-Sight Velocity Distribution (LOSVD). Using the mock IFU data, we demonstrate that the algorithm can effectively recover the stellar kinematics of the galaxy. We also show that lambda_R_e, the proxy of the spin parameter can be correctly measured from the deconvolved IFU data. Implementation of the algorithm to the actual SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey data exhibits the noticeable difference on the 2D LOSVD, geometry, lambda_R_e. The algorithm can be applied to any other regular-grid IFS data to extract the PSF-deconvolved spatial information.

Graph Database Solution for Higher Order Spatial Statistics in the Era of Big Data

  • We present an algorithm for the fast computation of the general N-point spatial correlation functions of any discrete point set embedded within an Euclidean space of ${\mathbb{R}}n$. Utilizing the concepts of kd-trees and graph databases, we describe how to count all possible N-tuples in binned configurations within a given length scale, e.g. all pairs of points or all triplets of points with side lengths < rmax. Through benchmarking we show the computational advantage of our new graph-based algorithm over more traditional methods. We show that all 3-point configurations up to and beyond the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation scale (~200 Mpc in physical units) can be performed on current Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data in reasonable time. Finally we present the first measurements of the 4-point correlation function of ~0.5 million SDSS galaxies over the redshift range 0.43< z <0.7. We present the publicly available code GRAMSCI (GRAph Made Statistics for Cosmological Information; bitbucket.org/csabiu/gramsci), under a GNU General Public License.

  • Message Passing Interface (MPI) collective communication has been applied to various science and engineering area such as physics, chemistry, biology, and astronomy. The parallel computing performance of the data-intensive workload in the above research fields depends on the collective communication performance. To overcome this limitation, MPI collective communication technology has been extensively researched over the last several decades to improve communication performance. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art research performed on the MPI collective communication and examine the trends of recently developed technologies. We also discuss future research directions for providing high performance and scalability to large-scale MPI applications.
