  • It is pointed out that non-wetting behavior of liquid Zn alloy occurs on high-tensile strength steels, which usually contain Si and Mn. There have been a lot of investigations to improve the above wettability of liquid Zn alloy with steels containing Si and Mn. Although those studies evaluated the wettability qualitatively by observation of the surface of steels galvanized by Zn or exfoliation test of Zn with substrate steels and so on, it is required to evaluate the wettability of liquid Zn with steels by measuring contact angle, work of adhesion, spreading velocity etc. which are usually used to assessment of general wetting behavior. In the present work, we evaluated the wettability of liquid Zn with steels containing Si and Mn by applying a sessile drop method to measure the change in contact angle and diameter of liquid Zn droplet wetted on steels.

  • Nature, such as plants, insects, and marine animals, uses micro/nano-textured surfaces in their components (e.g., leaves, wings, eyes, legs, and skins) for multiple purposes, such as water-repellency, anti-adhesiveness, and self-cleanness. Such multifunctional surface properties are attributed to three-dimensional surface structures with modulated surface wettability. Especially, hydrophobic surface structures create a composite interface with liquid by retaining air between the structures, minimizing the contact area with liquid. Such non-wetting surface property, so-called superhydrophobicity, can offer numerous application potentials, such as hydrodynamic drag reduction, anti-biofouling, anti-corrosion, anti-fogging, anti-frosting, and anti-icing. Over the last couple of decades, we have witnessed a significant advancement in the understanding of surface superhydrophobicity as well as the design, fabrication, and applications of superhydrophobic coatings/surfaces/materials. In this talk, the designs, fabrications, and applications of superhydrophobic surfaces for multifunctionalities will be presented, including hydrodynamic friction reduction, anti-biofouling, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing.

  • The fundamental parameters controlling ink-jet printing liquids are the viscosity and surface energy. The wetting contact angle determines the spread of a liquid drop on the surface and depends on the relative surface energy. The characteristics of silver ink-jet printing were studied with control of surface energy and head temperature. Polyethylene terephthalate(PET) film and Si-wafer(ptype) were used as substrates and atmospheric plasma was treated to control the surface energy. With silver ink, the hydrophilic surface treatment could reduce the radius of droplets due to the hydrophobic nature of silver ink.

  • We evaluated characteristics of ENEPIG (Electroless Nickel Electroless Palladium Immersion Gold) surface treatment for mobile equipment that requires high reliability, in addition to investigating surface treatment processes for semiconductor boards that require high reliability such as regular PCB-package systems, board-on-chip, chip-scaled package (CSP), etc and application for semiconductor package board of SIP, BOC. As a result, it appeared that ENEPIG has superior properties compared to ENIG surface treatment in corrosion resistance, solder junction, wetting, etc. We anticipate that these results will be able to lend credibility to ENEPIG as a low-cost alternative for producing mobile devices such as the cell phones, especially when applied to mass production.

  • Formation of$B_4C/Al$composite by pressureless infiltration was investigated by lowering wetting angle via surface modification of $B_4C$powder with alumina precursor. Surface modification was confirmed by zeta potential analysis. The$B_4C/Al$composite was prepared by placing an Al 6061 disk on the$B_4C$preform and heating at $1030{\circ}C$/20 min under a flowing argon, but no infiltration took place for a bare $B_4C$ preform even at$1250{\circ}C$/30 min. Analysis of XRD and SEM showed the $Al_3BC$phase besides$B_4C$and Al, but no trace of deteriorative$A1_4C_3$.

  • This work presents an experiment study to evaluate the nanoparticle adhesion and surface hydrophobicity characteristics of Teflon-polyurethane top coat depending on the number of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) coatings, which is a carbon-based hydrophobic particle. In order to measure the adhesion between the nanoparticles and the top coat, adhesion pull-off test was performed with different MWCNT oxidation times. Static contact angle and roughness measurements were carried out to characterize the surface hydrophobic behavior. Through the roughness evaluation, it was confirmed that the carbon nanotubes were wetted in the Teflon-polyurethane top coat, and the degree carbon nanotube wetting was confirmed through a USB-microscope. As a result, it was found that the larger the degree of wetting, the better the adhesion. From the experimental results, as the hydrophobicity of Teflon-polyurethane increased, the adhesive propertydecreased with the number of coatings. It was possible to improve the adhesive force and determine the number of coatings of carbon nanotubes with optimized hydrophobicity.

  • Nanoporous silica aerogels with various surface modifiers were prepared by ambient drying process. Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) were used a raw material. Ambient drying process for various surface modifier was studied in the point of view of a crack-free monolith and thin films and low cost. Various kinds of surface modifiers like as hexamethyldisilazane (HMDSZ), trimethlychlorosilane (TMCS), methlytriethoxylsilane (MTES), and methlytrimethoxysilane (MTMS) were studied in order to enhance hydrophobicity for the silica aerogel. Surface modified aerogels were evaluated by FT-IR, TG, BET, SEM and wetting angle measurement. Homogeneous and crack-free aerogels were obtained by modifying the HMDSZ and the TMCS. However silica xerogel was obtained when modified with MTMS, MTES.

  • The superhydrophobic and superoleophobic meshes surfaces have been used in various applications such as self-cleaning, anti-icing, gas exchange, oil-water separation, sound-wave penetrable anti-wetting structures, etc. In particular, there are many studies for oil-water separation with environmental issues. Because of high pressure and dynamic environment, oil-water separation filters must have stable surface properties as super-hydrophobicity and superoleophobicity. The oleophobicity of surface depends on the surface chemistry and roughness of the surface. The roughness of oleophobic surface enhances its static contact angle and stability. The multi-scale hierarchical structure provides a stable superhydrophobic state by maintaining a Cassie state. In this research, we fabricated a superoleophobic mesh with a multi-scale hierarchical structure to increase the pressure resistance and adjusted a size of the mesh hole.

  • Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic surfaces are promising technology for the surface finishing of metallic materials due to its water-repellency. Realization of highly water-repellent surface on aluminum and its alloys provides various functionalities for real application fields. In order to realize the hydrophobic/superhydrophobic surfaces on aluminum and its alloys, various technologies have been demonstrated. Especially, traditional anodic oxidation for aluminum has been widely employed for the morphological texturing of surfaces, which is essential to enhance the hydrophobic efficiency. De-wetting superhydrophobic surface on aluminum provides various exceptional properties, such as anti-corrosion, anti-/de-icing, anti-biofouling, drag reduction, self-cleaning and liquid separation. Nevertheless, the durability and stability of superhydrophobic surfaces still remain challenges for their actual applications in engineering systems and industry. In this review, the theoretical/experimental studies and current technical limitations on the hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surface using anodic oxidation of aluminum have been summarized.

  • The roll-to-roll (R2R) fabrication method to make micro-scale pillar arrays for biomimetic functionalization of surfaces is presented. Inspired by the micro-structure of plants in nature, a surface with a synthetic micro-scale pillar array is fabricated via maskless photolithography. After the surface is SAM (self-assembled monolayer) coated with trichlorosilane in a vacuum desiccator, it displays a hydrophobic property even in R2R replicas of original substrate, whose properties are further characterized using various pitches and diameters. In order to perform a comparison between the original micro-pattern and its replicas, surface morphology was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and wetting characteristics were measured via a contact angle measurement tool with a $10{\mu}L$ water droplet. Efficient roll-to-roll imprinting for a biomimetic functionalized surface has the potential for use in many fields ranging from water repelling and self-cleaning to microfluidic chips.
