The fluctuation of inlet flow to a water treatment plant makes a serious problem that it can change the outlet flow-rate from each process abruptly, and ultimately occur the detachment of the attached particles inside each unit process. Also, since it takes very short time for the surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter processes, it is impossible for operators to cope with that stably. Therefore this study was conducted to suggest the methodology for accurately predicting the travel time of surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter process. Through the experiment, which was carried out for the full-scale water treatment plants(capacity : 2,000m3/d), it could be confirmed that the flow rate fluctuation from equalization tank produce the surface wave. And the wave transfer velocity is a function of the hydraulic radius and the length of each open type tanks which are comprised in the latter processes.
Analyzing the interactions of free surface waves caused by a submerged-body movement is important as a fundamental study of submerged-body motion. In this study, a two-dimensional mini-towing tank was used to tow an underwater body for analyzing the generation and propagation characteristics of free surface waves. The magnitude of the maximum wave height generated by the underwater body motion increased with the body velocity at shallow submerged depths but did not increase further when the generated wave steepness corresponded to a breaking wave condition. Long-period waves were generated in the forward direction as the body moved initially, and then short-period waves were measured when the body moved at a constant velocity. In numerical simulations based on potential flow, the fluid pressure changes caused by the submerged-body motion were implemented, and the maximum wave height was accurately predicted; however, the complex physical phenomena caused by fluid viscosity and wave breaking in the downstream direction were difficult to implement. This research provides a fundamental understanding of the changes in the free surface caused by a moving underwater body.
Two-dimensional velocity tomograms of P- and S-waves were obtained by inverting traveltimes of first arrivals. The two sections of shear-wave velocity show similar features as a whole, with smaller values on the section from surface wave dispersions. Difficulties in picking SH-wave phases due to noise and later arrivals than P waves and PS converted waves are experienced. In addition, a flat layer model based on the surface wave inversion prohibits applications of the method where sgear wave velocities vary strongly in the lateral direction.
25 seismic shot gathers were obtained to study the two dimensional subsurface shear wave velocities in a landfilled area near the Keum river estuary. Borehole(BH#1 and BH#2) tests at two sites were made in the same area. Standard Penetration Tests were also performed at the same time. The 2-D shear wave velocity structure resulted from the inversion of the seismic data shows that the subsurface of the studied area consists of the upper 1${\sim}$3 meter thick layer(200 m/sec${\sim}$700 m/sec), the middle 5${\sim}$8 m thick low velocity layer(100 m/sec${\sim}$400 m/sec), and the lower layer of 1000m/sec or higher shear wave velocities. The thickness of the low velocity layer decreases from the BH #1 site to the BH #2 site. The depth to the basement also decreases toward the BH #2 site. The examination of the S wave velocity structure, the description of the geologic contents, and the Standard Penetration Test values indicate that the middle layer of low shear wave velocity may be related to the clay content of the layer. On the other hand, the Standard Penetration test values increase with depth, showing no significant relationship with the geologic contents of the subsurface. This study shows that the inversion of surface waves can be effective in the study of the shear wave velocity, especially in the area where low velocity layers can be found. The method of inversion of surface waves also can be used as a viable technique to overcome the limit of the seismic refraction method.
This paper investigated the dispersion characteristics of horizontal surface waves as means to apply conversional SASW techniques. To verify this proposal, 3D finite element analysis and Transfer matrix solution were performed. SH wave(Love waves) has the some advantages in comparison with Rayleigh wave. Representatively, Love wave has a characteristics not affected by compression wave. These characteristics have the robust applicability for the surface wave investigation techniques. In this study, for the purpose of employing Love wave in the SASW method, the dispersion characteristics of the Love wave was extensively investigated by the theoretical and numerical approaches. The 3-D finite element and transfer matrix analyses for the half space and two-layer systems were performed to determine the phase velocities from Love wave as well as from both the vertical and the horizontal components of Rayleigh wave. Preliminary, numerical simulations and theoretical solutions indicated that the dispersion characteristics of horizontal surface wave(Love waves) can be sufficiently sensitive and appliable to SASW techniques.
Hamilton's principle is used to derive Euler-Lagrange equations for free surface flow problems of incompressible ideal fluid. The velocity field is chosen to satisfy the continuity equation a priori. This approach results in a hierarchial set of governing equations consist of two evolution equations with respect to two canonical variables and corresponding boundary value problems. The free surface elevation and the Lagrange's multiplier are the canonical variables in Hamilton's sense. This Lagrange's multiplier is a velocity potential defined on the free surface. Energy is conserved as a consequence of the Hamiltonian structure. These equations can be applied to waves in water of finite depth including generalization of Hamilton's equations given by Miles and Salmon.
Surface wave exploration method has many advantages over other conventional exploration methods. Only limited accumulation of the study results has been made due to the recent development of the method. In this study the characteristics of the phase dispersion curves of four sites with different geo-technical properties have been identified. A generalized inversion method was used to obtain the shear wave velocity profiles of the study areas. The shear wave velocity profiles were compared with the columnar sections of the boreholes at the sites. This study shows that the rapid changes in the shear wave velocities are consistent with the changes in the sedimentary or lithologic faces found in the borehole measurements. This implicates that the surface wave exploration method could be used to identify changes in the physical properties of sediments or rocks.
3-D S-wave velocity model in the southern Korean Peninsula is investigated by using the joint inversion of receiver functions and surface-wave dispersion. A peninsula average Rayleigh-wave phase velocity in the 10-150 seconds range and tomographic estimates of the Rayleigh and Love wave group velocities in the 0.5-20 seconds period range determined using a $12.5{\times}12.5\;km$ grid for the southern part of the peninsula are used for the inversion. Receiver functions were determined from broadband (STS-2), short-period (SS-1) and acceleration (Episensor) channels of 95 stations. The dense distribution of the stations in the Peninsula permits us to examine the 3-D crustal structure in detail. The inversion result shows the variation and characteristics of S-wave velocity in the crust and upper mantle of the southern Korean Peninsula very well.

The residual stress in shot-peened Al 7075 alloy was evaluated using surface acoustic wave (SAW). Shot peening was conducted to produce a variation in the residual stress with the depth below the surface under a shot velocity of 30 m/s. The SAW velocity was measured from the V(z) curve using a scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM). The Vickers hardness profile from the surface showed a significant work hardening near the surface layer with a thickness of about 0.25 mm. As the residual stress became more compressive, the SAW velocity increased, whereas as the residual stress became more tensile, the SAW velocity decreased. The variation in the SAW velocity through the shot peened surface layer was in good agreement with the distribution of the residual stress measured by X-ray diffraction technique.

This paper describes a theoretical model and acoustic analysis of hysteresis of contacting surfaces subject to compression pressure. Contacting surfaces known to be nonlinear and hysteretic is considered as a simple spring that has a complex stiffness connecting discontinuous displacements between two solid contact boundaries. Mathematical formulation for 1-D interfacial wave propagation between two contacting solids is developed using the complex spring model to derive the dispersion relation between the interface wave speed and the complex interfacial stiffness. Existence of the interface wave propagating along the hysteretic interface is studied in theory and discussed by investigating the solution to the dispersion equation. Unlike the linear interface without hysteresis, there can exist only one distinct mode of interface waves for the hysteretic interface, which is anti-symmetric motion. The anti-symmetric mode of interface wave propagates with the velocity faster than the Rayleigh surface wave but less than the shear wave depending on the interfacial stiffness. If the contacting surfaces are compressed so much that the linear interfacial stiffness is very high, the hysteretic stiffness does not affect the interface wave velocity. However, it has an effect on the speed of interface wave for a loosely contact surfaces with a relatively low linear stiffness. It is also found that the phase velocity of anti-symmetric wave mode converges to the shear wave velocity in despite of the linear stiffness value if the hysteretic stiffness approaches 0.5.
