  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the output energy(voltage) of laser welding on the strength and properties of joint of cast titanium(CP Gr II) and titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V). Material and method : Cast titanium and its alloy rods(ISO6871) were prepared and perpendicularly cut at the center of the rod. After the cut halves were fixed in a jig, and the joints welded with a laser-welding machine at several levels of output voltage of $200V{\sim}280V$. Uncut specimens served as the non-welded control specimens The pulse duration and pulse spot size employed in this study were 10ms and 1.0mm respectively. Tensile testing was conducted at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The ultimate tensile strength(MPa) was recorded, and the data (n=6) were statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Scheffe's test at ${\alpha}$=0.05. The fracture surface of specimens investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Vickers microhardness was measured under 500g load of 15seconds with the optimal condition of output voltage 280V. Results : The results of this study were obtained as follows, 1. When the pulse duration and spot size were fixed at 10ms and 1.0mm respectively, increasing the output energy(voltage) increased UTS values and penetration depth of laser welded to titanium and titanium alloy. 2. For the commercial titanium grade II, ultimate tensile strength(665.3MPa) of the specimens laser-welded at voltage of 280V were not statistically(p>0.05) different from the non-welded control specimens (680.2MPa). 3. For the titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V), ultimate tensile strength(988.3MPa) of the specimens laser-welded at voltage of 280V were statistically(p<0.05) different from the non-welded control specimens (665.0MPa). 4. The commercial titanium grade II and titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V) were Vickers microhardness values were increased in the fusion zone and there were no significant differences in base metal, heat-affected zone.

  • In this study, the paclitaxel eluting stent (PES) was prepared by coating a biliary stent with paclitaxel using various biopolymer such as poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc), poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), Silicone rubber for restenosis prevention in gastrointestinal disease by a dip-coating method. Drug contents of PES were increased as surface area of stent, concentration and molecular weight of coating polymer increase. In $^1H-NMR$ specta, we know that drug did not change by confirming specific peaks of paclitaxel in PES. As shown in SEM image, PES prepared using various biopolymer is coated clearly and regularly except Silicone rubber coating polymer. In in vitro cell cytotoxicity test, bare stent showed low cytotoxic effect against CT-26 colon carcinoma cell line on 3 day. However, PES coated with PLGA 502H showed the highest cytotoxicity because PLGA 502H is biodegradable polymer and has less molecular weight than other coating polymer. These results suggest that PES coated various biopolymer can be prevented restenosis in gastrointestinal disease.

  • The fixed slab analogy device which can measure stress intensity factors(S.I.F) experimentally by slab analogy theory is developed in this paper. The margin of errors resulted from the new testing apparatus are between 0.02% and 8.25%. Therefore, it is assured that this one can be effectively used for the more accurate measurement of S.I.F.( $k_{I}$, $k_{I I}$) than conventional apparatus. The pitch of master grating used in this experiment is 0.1mm It is known that the ratio of the distance from crack tip to the crack length on obtaining the accurate stress intensity factor is between 0.4 and 0.7. The optimum curvature radius of slab is about 125mm. The thickness of slab(plate) used in the fixed slab analogy device is 0.05mm(P.V.C. ; E = 64 MN/ $m^{2}$, .nu.=0.38), which is proved to be suitable for the test. The optimum material for the frame(slab`s external boundary) is a alloy tool steel(SKS 5) plate and its thickness is 1mm. In this research, the rigid cracks are directly bonded to the slab surface by cyanoacrylate adhesive for the easiness of slab making and conformity to the practical crack figure. The material of rigid crack is thin steel plate. It is expected that the developed method can be used effectively for the analysis of $k_{I}$ and $k_{I I}$ of arbitrary shaped or distributed cracks.cks.

  • The primary purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' conceptual understanding of density for solids and liquids in pure and mixed substances who had preceded formal school science instruction on density and related topics. A concept assessment on density was developed and administered by demonstrative experiments accompanied by a written assessment test method to 120 general high school students in a metropolitan city. The scientific conceptions and alternative conceptions from students' responses were identified and the percentages of them were calculated. Then, their alternative conceptions and implicit theories on density were analyzed. About half of the students couldn't differentiate weight-volume-density and regarded density as an innate property of matter. Furthermore, the greater the number of variables involved in an experimental condition of the question, the more complicated and undifferentiated students' density concepts were. Students employed more improper variables such as particle size, intermolecular distance, surface tension, polarity of the solvent, etc. in explaining counter-intuitive observations. The implications for school science instruction were discussed.

  • In this study, we have measured the charring rate of solid sawn timber as a preceding step for develop performance based fire safety design method of wood framed building structures. The follows are the summary of fire test results carried out with $400{\times}400$ mm cross-section Douglas-fir in varied of thickness and grain directions. I) When the timber thickness increase under same dimension, the charring rate decreases gradually. It is seemed the charring layer up on a thickness roles as a insulation, gives combustion delaying time to specimen. 2) The charring rates measured at different depths (10, 20, 30, 40 mm) in timber which varying thickness (20, 40, 80, 120 mm) when exposed maximum 1 hour standard fire increase by 30 mm depth, but decrease at 40 mm. It is seemed the minimum charr layer should be 30 mm for having role of insulation. 3) The charring rate of cross section surface (direction of perpendicular to grain) was more high than that of grain direction. It can be explained by the cracks and gaps from greater charr contraction made more heat flux incident into timber.

  • This paper is to develop the method of surface soil improvement by electric heating equipment. For this purpose, the electric heating systems were invented to apply to the in-situ soil. Iaboratory tests were done to study the behaviors of sea clays by eletric heating. In lab tests, two different heating temperatures, $70^{\circ}C$ and $110^{\circ}C$, were applied to the saturated clays to examine the relationship between evaporation and compaction. In addition, trafficability was analyzed to the heated by applying cone penetrometer to the heated clays Furthermore, in-situ tests were conducted to analyze the range of soil improvement and strength variations. The temperature changes in field were measured and they were compared with those of the commercial program (Temp/W). Also, the bearing capacities of electrically heated field were tested by PBT (plate bearing test). Several conclusions were derived from the results of the numerical analysis and tests (lab and field). The improvement ranges and strength variations of electrically heated soil depended on the heating temperature and time. If the heating temperature is more than $100^{\circ}C$ evaporating the ground water, the bearing capacity and settlement increased rapidly. The bearing capacities of in-situ soil increased more than 3 times, and heated soil emitted a lot of vapors. The soil around electric heater was sintered completely, and its range was almost 20 cm.

  • A magnesium bipolar plate whose surface was protected by thinly deposited silver layer was investigated as an alternative to existing graphite bipolar plate of PEM fuel cells. Thin silver layer of $3{\mu}m$ was deposited on a magnesium alloy substrate by physical vapor deposition (PVD) method in an environment of $180^{\circ}C$. A number of tests were conducted on the fabricated magnesium based bipolar plates to determine their suitability for use in PEM fuel cell stacks. The test on corrosion resistance in the same pH condition as in a PEM operation demonstrated the layer protected the magnesium alloy substrate, while unprotected substrate suffered from severe corrosion. The contact resistance of the fabricated bipolar plate was less than $20m{\Omega}-cm^2$ which was superior to the conventional bipolar plates. A single cell was constructed using the fabricated bipolar plates and power output was measured. Due to the enhanced conductivity caused by low contact resistance, slight increase was observed in current density and output voltage. With low density of the magnesium substrate and ease on machining, the weight reduction of the stack of 30~40 % is possible to produce the same power output.

  • It is faced with the necessity of multi roll forming process of the ball slide rail which is made by adding the separate manufacturing processes, piercing, bending, trimming, to the roll forming process of a continuous plastic deformation, to improve the quality. However, the vibration and noise of the press machine in this process leads to the quality degradation of slide rail manufactured in this process. In this study, the roll was designed considering the optimal strain rates by the roll forming program with finite element method. And to estimate the static stability of the multi process the Von-Mises stress and deformation on the press was calculated with a structural analysis program. Also, to avoid driving systems in the resonance region their natural frequencies in the 1st and 2nd mode were calculated through the modal analysis. To verify its dynamic stability improvement the magnitudes of noise and vibration in the existing and studied system were compared using a microphone and accelerometers. And the widths and surface roughnesses of the rails which had been produced in the existing and studied process were measured. Therefore, it is known that multi roll forming process is stable in the analytical and experimental study.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish experimentally the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced concrete using kenaf dosages and propose the usable method of kenaf fiber in the concrete industry as natural fiber materials. Kenaf fiber help make the concrete strength including tensile and flexural stronger, more resistant to plastic and drying shrinkage, less amount of carbon dioxide because of having a rough surface and excellent tensile strength of fiber and improving the concrete's corrosion resistance. It is to select the kenaf dosages of 4 cases (0, 0.3, 0.6 and $0.9kg/m^3$ and perform various tests including slump, air content, plastic and drying shrinkage, flexural and tensile strength for fiber reinforced concrete. The results of this study are as follows : In case of increasing kenaf fiber dosages, show the slump decrease and air content increase, also take effect results for increasing concrete strength including flexural and tensile, decreasing plastic and drying shrinkage. therefore, considered test results and cost, the optimum dosages of kenaf fiber is proposed about $0.6kg/m^3$ and need to study on the site application considering concrete quality and another compared tests.

  • The target of this study is large scale rock slope collapsed by around 7 pm on August, 2012, which is located at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ limestone quarries of Gangneung city, Gangwondo. The slope prior to the collapse is formed as the height of about 200 m and the average inclination of $45^{\circ}$. The estimated amount of the collapse is about $1,500,000m^3$ with respect to the slope after the collapse. Geotechnical and field investigations such as boring, geophysical prospecting, surface geological survey, geological lineaments, borehole imaging, metric 3D imaging, experimental and field test, mining work by year, and daily rainfall were performed to find the cause of rock slope failure. Various analyzes using slope mass rating, stereonet projection, limit equilibrium method, continuum and non-continuum model were conducted to check of the stability of the slope. It is expected that the cause of slope failure from the results of various analysis and survey is due to the combined factors such as topography, rainfall, rock type and quality, discontinuities, geo-structural characteristics as the limestone cavity and fault zones, but the failure of slope in case of the analysis without the limestone cavity is not occurred. Safe factor of 0.66 was obtained from continuum analysis of the slope considering the limestone cavity, so the ultimate causes of slope failure is considered to be due to the influence of limestone cavity developed along fault zone.
