The Effect of Corrosion of Rolling Bearing Ceramics in Alkalic Solution on the Rolling Wear and Hardness (알카리용액에서 구름베어링용 세라믹스의 부식이 구름마모 및 경도에 미치는 영향)

  • Silicon nitride ceramic has been verified as an excellent rolling bearing material because of its high strength and outstanding rolling fatigue life properties. However under some corrosive circumstances it showed drawbacks such as hardness reduction and severe wear caused by corrosion. In this work, the variations of the rolling wear and hardness of three kinds of ceramics were studied for the specimen aged 15 days in alkali water (90$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$, 25 wt% NaOH). All of the specimens, \circled1Si$_3$N$_4$, \circled23Y-TZP and \circled33Y-TZP alloyed with 5 wt% CeO$_2$, were sintered and post-Hipped, and then polished up to 0.02 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$Ra of surface roughness. Rolling wear tests were conducted by MJ type rolling fatigue life tester under the initial theoretical maximum contact stress or 3.76 Gra and the spindle speed of 1,000 rpm. Spindle oil was used as a lubricant. The specimens were not worn before aging. For the specimen aged in alkali water, Si$_3$N$_4$and 3Y-TZP were worn by rolling wear tests, and hardness was decreased. While aging the specimens, the phase was transformed from tetragonal to monoclinic in 3Y-TZP and the microstructure change occurred in Si$_3$N$_4$. 3Y-TZP alloyed with 5 wt% CeO$_2$specimens were not worn after aging and no phase transformation occurred while aging.

A Study on Prediction of Rolling Noise for Railway -Noise Contribution of Wheels and Rail- (철도차량의 전동음 예측에 관한 연구 -차륜과 레일의 소음 기여도 분석-)

  • The major source of railway noises is rolling noise caused by the interaction of the wheels and rails. This rolling noise is generated by the roughness of the wheel /rail surface on tangent track in the absence of discontinuities such as wheel flats or rail joints. These roughness cause relative vibrations of the wheel and rail at their contact area. The vibrations generated at the contact area are treansmitted through the wheel and rail structures exciting resonances of the wheel and travelling waves in the rail. Then these vibrations radiate noise to the wayside. In this paper we predict the rollingnoise radiated from radial/axial motion of the wheel and vertical/lateral motion of the rail using Remington's analytical model and then compare of the predicted sound pressure and measured one. Although there are some inaccuracy in our prediction. these results show in good agreement between 500 Hz and 3150 Hz.

  • The rolling wear behavior of SM55C is investigated under lubrication. This is a comparative tribological behavior of heat treatment effect for SM55C. Rolling wear test method is used for Ball-on-disk type. Specimens can be classified into two main groups: as-annealing and non-annealing. As result of wear behavior, flanking initial time of non-annealing specimen keep at retard but it have not under high normal load. One of the notable features of annealing specimen is steady flanking initial time for a normal load in this experiment. Failure mechanism of SM55C is due to the fatigue wear such like flanking, pitting etc.. Flanking leads to abruptly fracture of worn surface. Fracture mechanism has a connection with normal load and polishing direction of specimens.

Inhomogeneity of Hot Rolling Texture in Cu/Nb Added Ultra Low Carbon Steels

  • The texture and microstructure in Cu/Nb added ultra low carbon steels through the different thickness layer were studied after hot rolling. It was found that the two ultra low carbon steels all show the inhomogeneity of hot rolling texture and the Cu-added ultra low carbon steel was far more inhomogeneous than Nb-added one. In the center layer, the strong ${\alpha}\;fibre,\;{\gamma}\;fibre$ textures and the shear textures including 001<110>, 111<112> were founded. Near the surface, the ${\alpha}\;fibre$ texture and the orientation texture caused by a typical plane-strain deformation condition of bcc metals were observed.

  • The production of metal strip with uniform thickness and flatness are two important problems associated thin strip rolling. The thickness and flatness of strip are affected by the flattening of contact surface between strip and roll, the elastic recovery and the bending of roll. Especially, the flatness of the strip is greatly affected by bending deflection of roll. The roll must be designed considered the elastic deformation of roll. This study describes the measurement of thickness and flatness of strip and shows the crown roll for producing flat strip. But it is difficult to produce the crown roller. The cross rolling that is a simple method which can produce the flat strip is introduced and it is found the optimal cross angle for improvement of flatness of plate. These problems are solved by the MARC code on the basis of elastic-plastic material and the updated Lagrangian formulation.

Fabrication of stainless clad steel by hot rolling (열간압연에 의한 스테인레스 클래드강 제조)

  • Stainless clad steels were made through hot rolling process. Backing plates employed in this study were HSLA steel and mild steel. The shear bond strength increased with an increase of the soaking temperature and time. It was also found that the shear bond strength increased with an increase of the reduction ratio. The threshold deformation was observed to be 20% and 10% respectively when the soaking conditions of 15 min. at 900.deg. C and 30 min. at 1000.deg. C were applied. Either the rolling or the transverse direction did not give any significant difference in the shear bond strength. Stainless steel-HSLA steel was superior to stainless steel-mild steel in the same range of magnitude. Because the above experimental results were in contrary to the existing mechanisms, the new model was proposed to describe the bonding mechanism and the void formation.

  • In the demands of the high precise qualities of the products and product management by the customers, the general comprehensive system are necessary for the management with product qualities in plate rolling in concern with dimensions, shape, temperature, surface condition, material properties and so on. The PIPO(POSCO Intelligent Process Optimization) system has been developed in plate rolling for the these needs. This paper is concerned with a study of organization, major function and future plans for the development of the PIPO system.

  • The temperature distribution over the work roll length was estimated by solving a 2-dimensional heat transfer equation based on the rolling conditions and the thermal boundary conditions. In order to solve the governing equation, a finite volume method was employed. In the rolling conditions, the strip temperature, the contact time between roll and strip, the roll speed, the strip thickness, the rolling force and the rolling and idling time were used as input data. In order to verify the accuracy of temperature estimation, roll surface temperatures were measured in the roll shop. The measured temperatures showed a good correlation with the calculated ones.

A Behavior of Rolling Contact Fatigue on Retained Austenite in High-Carbon Chromium Bearing Steel (고탄소 크롬 베어링 강에서의 잔류 오스테나이트 변화에 따른 회전접촉 피로거동)

  • In order to study the effect of retained austenite on rolling contact fatigue in high-carbon chromium bearing steel, retained austenite was controlled by only tempering temperature, individually 200, 220 and $240^{\circ}C$. Among various microstructural alteration during rolling contact fatigue test, plate-like carbide most related to the flaking at sub-surface of contact pressure. The plate-like carbides formed during rolling contact fatigue test decrease with increasing tempering temperature, and fatigue life is much more improved. The retained austenite was decreased with the tempering temperature, and that decreased plate-like carbide formation. Therefore fatigue life is much more improved with decreasing retained austenite.

Macroscopic Wear Characteristics of Ceramics under the Rolling Contact (구름접촉시 세라믹의 거시적 마모특성)

  • The wear tests of ceramic materials in dry rolling contact were carried out at room temperature to investigate their macroscopic wear characteristics. Both point contact and line cootact were adapted in the wear tests of them. Ceramic materials used in these tests were silicon nitride, silicon carbide, cermet of TiN and TiC, titania, and alumina. The wear test of the bearing steel was carried out to compare to the wear test results of the ceramic materials. The results showed that the wear rate of silicon nitride was smaller than any other ceramic materials and bearing steel. In the steady wear, the wear volume of ceramic materials increases linearly with the rolling distance. It was also found from the experimental results that fracture toughness and surface roughness dominate the wear process of ceramic materials in dry rolling contact.
