Ground subsidence has occurred in the downtown of Muan-eup in Korea. Integrated geophysical survey, including two-dimensional resistivity, CSMT(Controlled source magnetotelluric), magnetic, borehole logging, GPR and resistivity tomography, has been conducted to investigate the cause of subsidence and ground conditions. Since the target area is in the city downtown, there were no spaces for surface geophysical methods. To get regional geology and to facilitate the detailed geophysical interpretation in the survey area, two-dimensional resistivity, CSMT and magnetic surveys have been applied in the outer region of the downtown. From these results, we could accurately define the Gwangju fault system and estimate the geologic conditions in the downtown. For the detailed survey of the downtown area, resistivity tomography and borehole logging data have been acquired using a few tens of densely located boreholes. Among these survey results, borehole logging data provided the guide to classification of the rock type and we could define the geologic boundary of granite and limestone formations. From the resistivity tomograms of 42 sections, which are densely located enough to be interpreted in a three-dimensional manner, we could delineate the possible weak zones or cavities in the limestone formations. In particular, resistivity tomograms in the subsided area showed the real image of ground subsidence. The map of hazardous zone has been derived from the joint interpretation of these survey results and we could provide the possible reinforcement strategy in this area.
A small-scale reinforced earth wall was constructed in a laboratory to investigate the effect of wall rigidity and of construction sequence on the wall. A full continuous wall facing and a discrete wall facing were designed and constructed for tests. These two different facing systems should adapt different construction procedures due to their different facing shapes. The model wall was built with geo-grid reinforcement, sand, and facings on rigid surface. The model wall was instrumented with earth pressure gages, LVDTs, and strain gages. The experimental results have shown differences in wall behavior related to construction sequence and types of wall facing. It is found in this study that the reinforced earth wall built with full continuous facing is safer than the reinforced earth wall built with the discrete wall facing.
Anchor, soil nail and micropile have been widely used for slope reinforcement and foundation. These all methods need grouting work after placing reinforcing member. The pressure injection-grouting techniques helps to increase the bearing capacity of reinforcing member by enhancing larger effective pile diameter and increasing the radial stresses acting on the grout body and causing irregular surface. However, the pressure reinjection-grouting techniques is not commonly used because grouting equipment and practical application example are short and the verification of reinforcing effect is difficult. In this study, the laboratory test was performed to evaluate the reinforcing effect with variation of grouting methods in clay. As a result of the test, the pressure reinjection-grouting techniques showed that the pullout capacity of reinforcing member increased up to 1.22~2.61 times comparing to the gravity fill techniques.
Anchor, soil nail, micropile have been widely used for slope reinforcement and foundation. These all methods need grouting work after placing reinforcing member. In domestic case, gravity fill techniques and pressure grouting techniques are mainly used. In contrast the pressure re-injection grouting method is not commonly used because grouting equipment and lack of practical application example is short and the verification of reinforcing effect is difficult. Pressure re-injection grouting is a kind of post grouting which technique increases the radial stresses acting on the grout body and causes irregular surface to be developed around bond length that tends to interlock the grout and the ground. In this study, the field test was performed to evaluate the reinforcing effect with the variation of grouting methods and pullout characteristics of reinforcing member placed by pressure re-injection grouting method. The test results showed that the post-grouting methods were useful to increase the pullout capacity.

Steel slag has the nature to hydrate and expand when in contact with non-reacting CaO and water, and thus can be used only in limited scope for landfill disposal as well as for recycling as civil construction aggregates. In order to use such steel slags more efficiently, the applicability of steel slag as sand mat alternative material was reviewed. In general, sand mat is used in soft ground surface reinforcement method and horizontal drain method, and is installed simultaneously with soft ground vertical drain method. Therefore in this study steel slag designing method and application standard etc were examined to recycle steel slag as sand mat alternative material, and laboratory soil test and model test were done. Test results indicated that the designing method and application standard meet various environment and quality standards, meaning that steel slag can be utilized as sand mat alternative material, and analysis of slag mat bearing capacity also indicated that use of steel slag produces double or more bearing capacity compared with existing sand mat.

This study has been carried out in two-phases to develop Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete (FRSCC) performance. In the first phase, the composition of the quaternary composite binder compromised CEM I 42.5N (58-70%), Rice Husk Ash (25-37%), quartz sand (2.5-7.5%) and limestone crushing waste (2.5-7.5%) were optimized. And in the second phase, the effect of two fiber types (steel brass-plated and basalt) was investigated on the SCC optimized with the optimum CB as disperse reinforcement at 6 different ratios of 1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0% by weight of mix for each type. In this study, the theoretical principles of the synthesis of self-compacting dispersion-reinforced concrete have been developed which consists of optimizing structure-formation processes through the use of a mineral modifier, together with ground crushed cement in a vario-planetary mill to a specific surface area of 550 m2 / kg. The amorphous silica in the modifier composition intensifies the binding of calcium hydroxide formed during the hydration of C3S, helps reduce the basicity of the cement-composite, while reducing the growth of portlandite crystals. Limestone particles contribute to the formation of calcium hydrocarbonate and, together with fine ground quartz sand; act as microfiller, clogging the pores of the cement. Furthermore, the results revealed that the effect of fiber addition improves the mechanical properties of FRSCC. It was found that the steel fiber performed better than basalt fiber on tensile strength and modulus of elasticity; however, both fibers have the same performance on the first crack strength and sample destruction of FRSCC. It also illustrates that there will be an optimum percentage of fiber addition.

This study explores the resistive heating characteristics of discontinuous carbon fiber (CF)-epoxy composites. Test samples including 1, 3, and 5 wt.% CF were fabricated using sonication and cast molding processes. For heating performance characterization, DC currents were applied to the composite samples, and surface temperatures were evaluated visually and quantitatively using an infrared camera. To estimate the thermal performance of composites and verify the experimental results, finite element analyses were performed. The resistive heating mechanism was investigated in connection with CF loading and applied voltages. Resistive heating efficiency increased proportionately with CF concentration and applied voltage. To obtain homogeneous temperature distribution of the samples, high degree of CF dispersion is required.

To construct the accurate radio satellite navigation system, the efficient communication each satellite with the ground station is very important. Throughout the communication, the orbit of each satellite can be corrected, and those information will be used to analyze the satellite satus by the operator. Since there are limited resources of ground station, the schedule of antenna's azimuth and elevation angle should be optimized. On the other hand, the satellite in the medium earth orbit does not pass the same point of the earth surface due to the rotation of the earth. Therefore, the antenna pass schedule must be updated at the proper moment. In this study, Q learning approach which is a form of model-free reinforcement learning and genetic algorithm are considered to find the optimal antenna schedule. To verify the optimality of the solution, numerical simulations are conducted.

Warpage of the film insert molded (FIM) part is caused by an asymmetric residual stress distribution. Asymmetric residual stress and temperature distribution is generated by the retarded heat transfer in the perpendicular direction to the attached film surface. Since warpage was not prevented by controlling injection molding conditions, glass fiber (GF) filled composites were employed as substrates for film insert molding to minimize the warpage. Distribution of short GFs was evaluated by using micro-CT equipment. Proper models for micro mechanics, anisotropic thermal expansion coefficients, and closure approximation should be selected in order to calculate fiber orientation tensor and warpage of the FIM part with the composite substrate. After six kinds of micro mechanics models, three models of the thermal expansion coefficient and five models of the closure approximation had been considered, the Mori-Tanaka model, the Rosen and Hashin model, and the third orthotropic closure approximation were selected in this study. The numerically predicted results on fiber orientation tensor and warpage were in good agreement with experimental results and effects of GF reinforcement on warpage of the FIM composite specimen were identified by the numerical results.

In recent years, 3D printing has received increasing attention due to its potential for direct fabrication beyond the traditional rapid prototyping. 3D printing has the advantage of being able to manufacture complicated shapes that were thought impossible to produce by traditional manufacturing processes. This advantage has driven applications of 3D printing to direct manufacturing of functional parts, such as lightweight structures and component integration. In this study, a porous shell structure is designed for the purpose of weight reduction and ventilation. Finite element (FE) analyses are performed to compare the effective stiffness of the porous structure with the conventional solid structure. Structural reinforcements are also considered in order to make up the stiffness reduction due to the porosity, and the relevant FE analyses are performed to investigate the effect of the reinforcement design on the bending stiffness. The optimized reinforced structure is then proposed through response surface analysis.
