In order to analyse the degradation process of epoxy/glass fiber for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to the wavelength of ultraviolet rays and evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface resistivity, surface potential decay, and ESCA spectrum respectively. As irradiation energy are increased, the surface properties were steeply decreased in the range of 300[nm]. But the measured values within the scope of400[nm]∼440[nm] showed a increase as compared with the untreated ones. Also, fromthe result of ESCA spectrum, it was confirmed plenty of oxygen groups on the spot showing the maximum decrease of surface properties and the existence of ether groups on the surface of coloring phase. We can conclude that the degradation phenomena on the surface of epoxy composites are dominated by the induction of ester and carboxyl groups.
In order to develop of support medla for bloom reactor, physicochemical properties and attachability of surface of activated carbon, clay mineral, non-clay mineral, and waste mold sand were enamined. Measured physicochemical properties of materials were surface roughness, mean particle size, surface area, hydrophobicity, and surface charge. At a tested materials, activated carbon was the best attachable material and microorganisms were attached $20.1{\times}10^7CFU/cm^2$ at surface, compared with diatomaceous earth which were attached of $9.2{\times}10^7CFU/cm^2$ in our research, surface area and hydrophobicity show- ed more Influence than any other factor on attachment of microorganisms.
We studied the physical properties of the mercaptopyruvic-acid layer formed on gold surfaces, which has the interactions with the titanium dioxide surface for design of gold- titanium dioxide distribution. Surface force measurements were performed, using the atomic force microscope (AFM), between the surfaces as a function of the salt concentration and pH value. The forces were analyzed with the DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) theory, to evaluate the potential and charge density of the surfaces quantitatively for each salt concentration and each pH value. The difference in the properties reflected the effect of the isoelectric point on the surface forces. The forces were interpreted for the evaluation with the law of mass action and the ionizable groups on the surface. The salt concentration dependence of the surface properties, found from the measurement at pH 8.0, was consistent with the prediction from the law. It was found that the mercaptopyruvic-acid layer had higher values for the surface charge densities and potentials than the titanium dioxide surfaces at pH 8, which may be attributed to the ionized-functional-groups of the mercaptopyruvic-acid layer.
In this study, activated carbon fabric was prepared from a cellulose-based polymer (viscose rayon) via a combination of physical and chemical activation (mixed activation) processes by means of $CO_2$ as a gasifying agent and surface and adsorption properties were evaluated. Experiments were performed to investigate the consequence of activation temperature (750, 800, 850 and $925^{\circ}C$), activation time (15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes) and $CO_2$ flow rate (100, 200, 300 and 400 mL/min) on the surface and adsorption properties of ACF. The nitrogen adsorption isotherm at 77 K was measured and used for the determination of surface area, total pore volume, micropore volume, mesopore volume and pore size distribution using BET, t-plot, DR, BJH and DFT methods, respectively. It was observed that BET surface area and TPV increase with rising activation temperature and time due to the formation of new pores and the alteration of micropores into mesopores. It was also found that activation temperature dominantly affects the surface properties of ACF. The adsorption of iodine and $CCl_4$ onto ACF was investigated and both were found to correlate with surface area.
Graphene has attracted a lot of attentions due to the unique electrical and optical properties. Compared with the noble metal plasmons in the visible and near-infrared frequencies, graphene can support surface plasmons in the lower frequencies of terahertz and mid-infrared and it demonstrates an extremely large confinement at the surface because of the particular electronic band structures. Especially, the surface conductivity of graphene can be tuned by either chemical doping or electrostatic gating. These features make graphene a promising candidate for plasmonics, biosensing and transformation optics. Furthermore, the combination of graphene and metasurfaces presents a powerful tunability for exotic electromagnetic properties, where the metasurfaces with the highly-localized fields offer a platform to enhance the interaction between the incident light and graphene and facilitate a deep modulation. In this paper, we provide an overview of the key properties of graphene, such as the surface conductivity, the propagating surface plasmon polaritons, and the localized surface plasmons, and the hybrid graphene/metasurfaces, either metallic and dielectric metasurfaces, from terahertz to near-infrared frequencies. Finally, there is a discussion for the current challenges and future goals.
In this work, the grow of carbon nanotube (CNT) on carbon fiber was introduced on PAN-based carbon fibers for the enhancement of mechanical interfacial strength of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of carbon fibers were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). From the results, it was found that the mechanical interfacial properties of CNT-carbon fibers-reinforced composites (CNT-CFRPs) enhanced with decreasing the CNT content. The excessive CNT content can lead the failure due to the interfacial separation between fibers and matrices in this system. In conclusion, the optimum CNT content on carbon fiber surfaces can be a key factor to determine the mechanical interfacial properties of the CNT-CFRPs.
In this study, the effects of surface treatment of bamboo fiber on the physical properties of polypropylene(PP)/glass fiber(GF)/Bamboo fiber(BF) composite for engine cover were investigated. PP, GF and BF were fixed at 40%, 40% and 20% and the surface of bamboo fibers were treated to 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% as an acid and alkali solution. PP/GF/BR composites using surface treated bamboo fibers were prepared and their tensile strength, bursting strength and impact strength were measured by universal testing machine(UTM). The composites with alkali treated bamboo fiber showed better mechanical properties than the acid treated composites. It was checked that the optimum alkali content was at 1.0% from the results of mechanical properties. The effect of surface treatment on the mechanical properties was confirmed by SEM images of fractured surface.
The effects of residual stress and surface defects on the mechanical properties of the high carbon steel filament used for the automotive tire have been experimentally investigated. The samples were fabricated with annealing temperature. The residual stress was measured by focused ion beam and strain mapping software which has advantages, such as data with high accuracy and fast data acquisition time. Mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and fatigue resistance, were gradually increased up to $200^{\circ}C$ and then slightly decreased. From the measurement of residual stress and level of surface defect, it was revealed that the critical factor was varied with different temperature region. That is, the fatigue resistance increased due to decreasing the residual stress and decreased due to increasing the size and distribution of surface defect.
To improve the mechanical properties of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites through interfacial adhesion control between the PP matrix and glass fiber, the surface of the glass fiber was modified with PP-graft-maleic anhydride (MAPP). Surface modification of the glass fiber was carried out through the well-known hydrolysis-condensation reaction using 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane, and then subsequently treated with MAPP to produce the desired MAPP-anchored glass fiber (MAPP-a-GF). The glass-fiber-reinforced PP composites were prepared by typical melt-mixing technique. The effect of chemical modification of the glass fiber surface on the mechanical properties of composites was investigated. The resulting mechanical and morphological properties showed improved interfacial adhesion between the MAPP-a-GF and PP matrix in the composites.
Among the various properties of textile fabrics, the moisture-related properties are important for the textile processes or the apparel comfort characteristics. Alkaline hydrolysis results in pitting on the surface of fibers and increases the amount of hydroxyl and carboxyl end groups of the PET molecules on the fiber surface. The purpose of this study is to investigate the moisture-related properties of PET fabrics treated with quaternary ammonium compound/alkaline solution. The wetting and wicking properties of the PET fabrics were measured using the following experiments: contact angle, surface free energy, work of adhesion, vertical wicking height, moisture regain, and frictional static voltage. It was concluded that by the alkaline hydrolysis process, surface hydrophilicity and reactivity were considerably improved especially at lower levels of weight loss% and that the pitting of the fiber surface resulted in at higher levels of weight loss% was disadvantageous in moisture-related properties of PET.
