  • A novel surface plasmon resonance sensor, which can measure 2-dimensional array of immobilized ligands without using imaging devices such as CCD, has been proposed. Regular surface plasmon resonance can be directly used due to the insertion of additional layers with different thickness, on which each ligands are immobilized. Surface plasmon resonance signals are separated depending on the thickness of additional layers. The possibility of multi-sensing capability of the proposed surface plasmon resonance sensor has been verified by the modeling that is based on Fresnel reflection model.

  • The bio-sensing properties of TE and TM guided modes in the coupled plasmon-waveguide resonance (PWR) configuration are investigated. The modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) is used for numerical analysis. The proposed PWR bio-sensor is composed of multi-layered configuration with N pairs of MgF2-Si3N4 layers to enhance the sensitivity of a conventional Ag-based surface plasmon resonance bio-sensor. The angular sensitivity of bio-sensor is numerically analyzed for a wide range of biological solutions (refractive index 1.33~1.37). Furthermore, the availability of sensor to detect cancer cells and blood plasma concentration is evaluated. Finally, the results indicate that the proposed bio-sensor is capable efficiently to detect various kinds of cancer cells and different glucose concentrations in urine.

  • In this study, the optical properties of localized surface plasmon resonance sensor using optical fiber was analyzed as the variation of a size and surface density of gold nano particles on the etched optical fiber surface. It is shown that a size and surface density of gold nano particles on optical fiber surface are controlled by $Na_3$ citrate quantity and pH of gold colloid solution. To measure the sensitivity, peak wavelength of absorbance spectrum was detected as the reflective index of the solution. The sensor sensitivity is linearly dependent on the size and surface densities of gold nano particles from the results of optical experiments.

  • We propose a novel micro surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor system based on polymer materials. The proposed SPR system consists of the incident medium with polymer waveguide and the gold thin film for sensing area. Using a polymer optical waveguide instead of a prism in SPR sensing system offers miniaturization, low cost, and potable sensing capability. The whole device performance was analyzed using the finite-difference time domain method. The optimum gold thickness in the attenuated total reflection mirror of polymer waveguide is around 50 nm and the resonance angle to generate surface plasmon wave is 68 degrees.

  • Various etching methods of optical fiber and formation of metal nano particles on the optical fiber have been proposed for fabrication of fiber optic localized surface plasmon resonance (FO LSPR) biosensors. Different types of etched optical fiber are possible by removing the cladding of optical fiber using HF (hydrofluoric acid) solution and BHF (buffered hydrofluoric acid) solution, which results in improved surface roughness when BHF solution is used. Localized surface plasmon can be formed and measured by formation of silver and gold nano particles on the etched optical fiber. The characteristics of the etched optical fiber and metal nano particles on the etched surface of the optical fiber play a key role in dictating the sensitivity of the LSPR sensors, so that the proposed results can be expected to be applied for related research on fiber optic based biosensors.

  • A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor system for the determination of sucrose concentration was constructed with a gold thin film sensing chip. The properties of gold thin film are critical factors in exciting surface plasmon resonance phenomena. Therefore in the present paper, the fabrication conditions of gold thin film were investigated to optimize the SPR phenomena. The optimum thickness was obtained as $545{\AA}$ with $43.75^{\circ}$ resonance angle and good surface roughness limitation. about $3{\AA}$. The linear resonance angle shifts and rapid response were observed from the sucrose concentrations ranged from 0 to 40wt%.

  • Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been widely used for biological and chemical sensing applications. The present study investigates numerically the optical characteristics for the single Au film and bimetallic Ag/Au film SPR configurations by using the multiple beam interference matrix (MBIM) method. We use the prism coupling method, especially Kretschmann configuration for excitation of surface plasmon wave (SPW). The estimated results of reflectance, phase shift and magnetic field intensity enhancement factor are provided for finding out the optimum configuration with high sensitivity for SPR measurement. As a result, the optimum thicknesses are found to be 52 nm for a single Au film and 5 nm to 36 nm for bimetallic Ag-Au film. From the comparison of full width half maximum (FWHM) values for reflectance, phase shift, and enhancement of magnetic field intensity, it is concluded that the highest sensitivity can be obtained when using the phase shift for SPR sensor.

  • This study reports a fiber-optic sensor detecting biomolecule by simultaneously monitoring localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) of ca. $50{\pm}5$ nm attached on one end of optical fiber and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the reporter molecules adsorbed on the gold surfaces as an additional sensing tool. The sensor was fabricated by immobilizing Au NPs on one end of an optical fiber by chemical reaction. LSPR and SERS signals of the sensor were measured using various refractive indices solutions. Finally, the sensor was applied to observe real-time LSPR sensor-gram and SERS spectra of the reporter molecule of 4-aminothiphenol during the antibody-antigen reaction of interferon-gamma (IFN-${\gamma}$) as a proof-concept experiment of biological applications.

  • We have investigated the grating coupled surface plasmon resonance (GC-SPR) sensors using ZnO nano-grating structures to enhance the sensitivity of an SPR sensor. The GC-SPR sensors were analyzed using the finite-difference time-domain method. The optimum resonance angles of 49 degrees are obtained in the 150 nm wide grating structure with a period of 300 nm for the ZnO thickness of 30 nm. Then, the ZnO nano-grating patterns were fabricated by using laser interference lithography. The measured resonance angle of nano-grating patterns was around 49 degrees. Here, an enhanced evanescent field is obtained due to the surface plasmon on the edge of the bandgap when the ZnO grating structures are used to excite the surface palsmon.

  • We explored localized plasmonic field enhancements using nanowire patterns to improve the sensitivity of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. Two different materials, gold and silver, were considered for sample materials. Gold and silver nanowire patterns were fabricated by electron beam lithography for experimental measurements. The wavelength SPR sensor was also designed for these experiments. The material-dependent field enhancements on nanowire patterns were first calculated based on Maxwell's equations. Resonance wavelength shifts were indicated as changes in the refractive index from 1.33 to 1.36. The SPR sensor with silver nanowire patterns showed a much larger resonance wavelength shift than the sensor with gold nanowire patterns, in good agreement with simulation results. These results suggest that silver nanowire patterns are more efficient than gold nanowire patterns, and could be used for sensitivity enhancements in situations where biocompatibility is not a consideration.
