In order to investigate the factors and processes affecting the vertical distributions of ozone, we analyzed the ozone profile data measured using ozonesonde from 1995 to 1997 at Pohang city, Korea. In the course of our study, we analyzed temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of ozone at four different heights: surface (100m), troposphere (10km), lower stratosphere (20km), and middle stratosphere (30km). Despite its proximity to a local, but major, industrial complex known as Pohang Iron and Steel Co. (POSCO), the concentrations of surface ozone in the study area were comparable to those typically observed from rural and/or unpolluted area. In addition, the findings of relative enhancement of ozone at this height, especially between spring and summer may be accounted for by the prevalence of photochemical reactions during that period of year. The temporal distribution patterns for both 10 and 20km heights were quite compatible despite large differences in their altitudes with such consistency as spring maxima and summer minima. Explanations for these phenomena may be sought by the mixed effects of various processes including: ozone transport across two heights, photochemical reaction, the formation of inversion layer, and so on. However, the temporal distribution pattern for the middle stratosphere (30km) was rather comparable to that of the surface. We also evaluated total ozone concentration of the study area using Brewer spectrophotometer. The total ozone concentration data were compared with those derived by combining the data representing stratospheric layers via Umkehr method. The results of correlation analysis showed that total ozone is negatively correlated with cloud cover but not with such parameter as UV-B. Based on our study, we conclude that areal characteristics of Pohang which represents a typical coastal area may be quite important in explaining the distribution patterns of ozone not only from surface but also from upper atmosphere.
The planarization of rough polycrystalline diamond films synthesized by DC arc discharge plasma jet CVD (chemical vapor deposition) was attempted using KrF excimer laser pulses. The effects of laser incidence angle and reaction gases (ozone and oxygen) on etching rate of diamond were studied. The temperature change of diamond and graphite with different laser fluences was calculated by computer simulation to explain the etching behavior of diamond films. The threshold energy density from the experiment for etching of pure crystalline diamond was about $1.7J/cm^2$ and fairly matched the simulation value. Preferential etching of a particular crystallographic plane was observed through scanning electron microscopy. The etching rate of diamond with ozone was lower than that with oxygen. When the angle of incidence was $80^{\circ}$ to the diamond surface normal, the peak-to-valley surface roughness was Significantly reduced from $20{\mu}m$ to $0.5{\mu}m$.
In this paper efficient method for particle removal from silicon wafers by usage of HF and ozone was studied. It was found that at least 0.3 vol% concentration of HF was required for particle removal and removal efficiency increased with the application of megasonic in ozonated water. Additional cleaning with minute amount of ammonia (0.01 vol%) after HF/Ozone step showed over 99% in removal efficiency. It is proposed that the superior cleaning efficiency of HF-Ozone-ammonia is due to micro-etching of silicon surface and impediment of particle re-adsorption in alkali environment. Compared to SC-1 cleaning method micro roughness has also been slightly improved. Therefore it is expected that HF-ozone-ammonia cleaning method is a viable alternative to the conventional wet cleaning methods.
In this paper, the Cr(VI) adsorption behaviors of activated carbons (ACs) treated by various ozone treatment conditions were studied. The surface properties of the ACs studied were determined by pH, acid-base, and FT-IR measurements. $N_2$ adsorption isotherm characteristics at 77K were confirmed by BET equation, Boer's t-plot method, and Horvath-Kawazoe's slit pore model. Also, the total Cr adsorption amount onto the ACs was measured by ICP-AES. As a result, the ozone treatment led to an increase of oxygen-containing polar functional groups and total acidity as well. Meanwhile, the specific surface areas or micropore volumes were slightly decreased after the ozone treatment due to the micropore filling or blocking. Nevertheless, the total Cr adsorption of ACs was increased with increasing of the ozone treatment time, attributed to the good interaction between Cr ions and polar functional groups on the ACs.

The high-ozone episode in the Greater Seoul Area for the period of July 27 to August 1 1997 was modeled by the CIT(California Institute of Technology) three-dimensional photochemical model. Emission data were prepared by scaling the NIER(1994) data through and optimization method using VOC measurements in August 1997 and EKMA(Empirical Kinetic Modeling Approach). Two sets of meteorological data were prepared by the diagnostic routine. a part of the CIT model : one only utilized observations from the surface weather stations and the other also utilized observations from the automatic weather stations that were more densely distributed than those from the surface weather stations. The results showed that utilizing observations from the automatic weather stations could represent fine variations in the sind field such as those caused by topography. A better wind field gave better peak ozones and a more reasonable spatial distribution of ozone concentrations. Nevertheless, there were still many differences between predictions and observations particularly for primary pollutant such as NOx and CO. This was probably due to the inaccuracy of emission data that could not resolve both temporal and spatial variations.
The efficacy of ozone micro-bubble water (OMBW) in reducing microbial populations on alfalfa seeds was investigated in this study. We observed the surface of alfalfa seeds using microscopy and found that many cracks and crevices existing on the surface could harbor pathogens. Alfalfa seeds were treated with tap water (TW), micro-bubble water (MBW), ozone water (OW), ozone micro-bubble water (OMBW), and chlorine water (CL) for 5 min, and total microbial population, E. coli and Salmonella spp. colonies were determined. Also, the sterilized seeds were germinated and cultivated for 5 d after sowing to investigate the percentage of germination and the growth of alfalfa sprouts. The treatments with OMBW and CL were most effective in reducing total microbial populations and E. coli was eliminated by OW, OMBW, and CL treatments. CL treatment reduced the percentage of germination and fresh weight of alfalfa sprouts, but OMBW did not cause any negative effects on the germination and growth of alfalfa sprouts. These results indicate that OMBW can be used as an effective sanitizer for eliminating seed-borne pathogens without detrimental effects on seed viability.

We report the enhancement of hole injection using ozone-treated Ag nanodots dispersed on indium tin oxide anode in $Ir(ppy)_3-doped$ phosphorescent OLED. Phosphorescent OLED fabricated on Ag nanodots dispersed ITO anode showed a lower turn on voltage and higher luminescence than those of OLEDS prepared commercial ITO anode. Synchrotron x-ray scattering examination results showed that the Ag nanodots dispersed on ITO anode is amorphous structure due to low deposition temperature. It was thought that decrease of the energy barrier height as Ag nanodots changed to $AgO_x$ nanodots by surface treatment using ozone for 10 min led to enhancement of hole injection in phosphorescent OLED. Futhermore, efficient hole injection can be explained by increase of contact region between anode material and organic material through introduction of $Ag_2O$ nanodots.
The degradation efficiencies of phenol in aqueous solution were studied by semi-continuous experiments in the processes of ozone alone, ozone/bulky $Co_3O_4$ and ozone/$Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles. Catalyst samples (bulky $Co_3O_4$ and $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles) were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, $pH_{pzc}$ and the density of surface hydroxyl groups of the two catalyst samples were also measured. The catalytic activity of $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles was investigated for the removal of phenol in aqueous solutions under different reaction temperatures. Tert-butyl alcohol had little effect on the catalytic ozonation processes. Based on these results, the possible catalytic ozonation mechanism of phenol by $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles was proposed as a reaction process between ozone molecules and pollutants.

An innovative ozonizer has been developed using a high frequency, surface discharge and a high purity Ti-Si-AI ceramic catalyst as a dielectric component. Using a type of thin film, a thin cylindrical compound ceramic catalyst layer was adhered to the outside surface of its inner electrode. An alternating current (AC) exciting voltage with frequencies from 0.6 KHz to 1.0 KHz and peak-to-peak voltages of 4-6 ㎸ was applied between the electrodes to produce a stable high-frequency silent discharge. A substantial reduction of the exciting voltage was also enabled by means of a thin Ti-Si-Al ceramic catalyst tube. As a result, the ozonizer can effortlessly obtain the required ozone concentration (50-60 g/$m^2$ for oxygen) and high ozone efficiency consumption power (180 g/kWh for oxygen) with-out the assistance of any particular methods. For purposes of this experiment, oxygen gas temperature was set at 2$0^{\circ}C$, with an inner reactor pressure of 1.6 atm at 600 Hz and a flow rate of 2 l/min.

Recently, the tropospheric ozone has gained a global attention for its adverse effect on vegetation as well as its contribution to the global warming. Although a number of studies have been carried out for the urban ozone, the effect of ozone on vegetation is still largely unknown in Korea. The present work aimed at performing the first evaluation of forest damage by ozone using the national air monitoring data from the year 2000 to the year 2005. Moreover, it also explored the relevance of adverse effect of ozone to the recent events on leaf chlorosis of black locust, Robinia pseudo-acacia, leading to early foliage widely observed in Korea since 2001. In the nineties, forest damages caused by ozone such as leaf chlorosis occurred in Europe and North America and led to invoke comprehensive field and laboratory studies. As a result, AOT40, implying the accumulated dose over a threshold 40 ppb, was developed to assess the forest damage by ozone. 19 air monitoring stations were selected across Korea to calculate AOT40 from the year 2000 to the year 2005. The calculated AOT40 generally increased during April and May and reached the maximum after May. The increase of AOT40 diminished substantially from the mid-June as the rainy season started. The calculated AOT40 in the nine rural sites from the year 2002 to th ε year 2005 ranged from 6.8 to 29.4 ppm-hr. And all the AOT40 at th ε year 2005 exceeded the critical value of 10 ppm-hr for forest damage. Morevoer the calculated AOT40 of Korea appeared higher than the AOT40 of Europe in the year 2004/2005 and comparable to the AOT40 of China in the year 2000. Despite the high levels of the calculated AOT40 since the year 2001 and the consistency of time of seasons between high AOT40 values and occurrence of chlorosis of black locust, further studies are required to conclude that the chlorosis of black locust occurred from the year 2001 to the year 2005 were resulted from a damage by ozone.
