  • In this paper, a closed-loop sensorless stroke control system for a linear compressor has been designed. In order to estimate the piston position accurately, motor parameters are identified as a function of the piston position and the motor current. These parameters are stored in ROM table and used later for the accurate estimation of piston position. The identified motor parameters are approximated to the several surface functions in order to decrease memory size. They can also be divided into 2 or 4 subsections to decrease identification errors. The effect of the order of surface functions and division of subsections on identification errors and computation time is analyzed.

  • The paper reports an improvement method on torque ripples of multi-pole interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) applied to a traction motor for hybrid electric vehicles. In the case of multi-pole IPMSM, the magnetic flux generated by a permanent magnet tends to leak through the bridge of the rotor without a link with stator windings. The slit design on the rotor surface was proposed to reduce torque rippling and increase the output power by reducing the leakage flux. Two design parameters for the slit are suggested for optimal design using the response surface method. As an analysis method, the 2D finite element method (FEM) was applied to consider magnetic saturation effect.

  • Filament wound structures such as pressure tanks, pipes and motor cases of rockets are widely used in the aerospace application. The determination of a proper winding angle and thickness is very important to decrease manufacturing difficulties and to increase structural efficiency. In this study, possible winding angles considering the slippage between a fiber and a mandrel surface are calculated using the semi-geodesic path equation. In addition, finite element analysis using ABAcUS are performed to predict the behavior of filament wound structures considering continuous change of winding angle along the dome part. The water-pressuring tests of 3rd stage motor case are performed to verify the analysis procedure. The strain gages are attached on the surface in the fiber direction. Progressive failure analysis is performed to predict the burst pressure and the weakest region of the motor case. The effect of reinforcement is also studied to increase its performance.

  • A position control system of D.C. Servo motor based on discrete variable structure system with sliding mode is presented. The sliding mode has been designed for a continuous system, but it is often realized in digital fashion because the complex switching logic can be easily carried out. In digital control system, the ideal sliding mode does not occur since the structure can't be switched during sampling interval. However, there can be exist a motion which is confined to a regoin including the sliding surface and proceeds to the origin along the surface. This notion is called quasisliding mode. In this paper, we introduce this control scheme to the D.C. Servo motor position control in order to reduce the chattering phenonenon.

  • In this paper, disk-type ultrasonic motor using a combination of radial and bending vibration modes is newly designed and fabricated. The characteristics of the test motor are also measured. By means of traveling elastic wave induced at the surface of circumference of the elastic disk, a steel bar in contact with the surface of circumferenceof elastic disk bonded onto the piezoelectric ceramic disks is driven in both directions by changing the sine and cosine voltage inputs. The stator of the motor is composed of two sheets of piezoelectric ceramic disk to bond onto both surfaces of a elastic disk, respectively. As the results, the diameter of elastic body is increased, the resonant frequency is decreased. The resonant frequency of the stator is about 92 kHz, which is composed with piezoelectric ceramic disks of 28 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness, and an elastic body of 32 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. A driving voltage of 20 Vpp produces 200 rpm with a torque of 1Nm and an efficiency of about 10 %.

  • In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSM) and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM). First, we use 2D finite element analysis (FEA) to analyze models satisfying the same rated conditions according to the torque-speed curve characteristics, which are determined from the operating conditions. Next, we manufacture an SPMSM and IPMSM having good performances from an electromagnetic perspective based on analysis results, namely the cogging torque, torque ripple, and efficiency. We analyze both of the manufactured machines when they are connected back-to-back and when they are used as a motor and a generator, respectively. The motor is driven by a commercial inverter and the generator is connected to a three-phase resistance load bank. Finally, based on experimental results, which include the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the back electro-motive force (EMF), cogging torque, efficiency, and mass, we determine the motor that is most suitable under requirements.

  • We propose an online parameter estimation method for surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) using an affine projection algorithm (APA). The proposed method estimates parameters with two APAs based on the discrete-time model equation of SPMSM during motor operation. The first APA is designed to estimate inductance, and the second APA is designed to estimate resistance and flux linkage. However, in case when the d-axis current is controlled to 0A, the second APA cannot estimate resistance and flux linkage simultaneously because the matrix rank in APA becomes deficient. To overcome this problem, we temporarily inject a negative reference current input to the d-axis control loop, and the matrix in the APA then becomes full rank, which enables the simultaneous estimation of resistance and flux linkage. The proposed method is verified by PSIM simulation and an actual experiment, and the results reveal that SPMSM parameters can be estimated online during motor operation.

  • This paper deals with the optimum design criteria for the premium efficiency of 250 kW traction induction motor, using response surface methodology (RSM) and finite element method (FEM). The focus of this paper is found firstly a design solution through the comparison of torque according to rotor bar shape, rotor dimensions variations. And secondly a mixed resolution with central composite design (CCD) is introduced and analysis of variance (ANOVA) is conducted to determine the significance of the fitted regression model. The proposed procedure allows to be optimized the rotor copper bar shape, rotor slot, rotor dimensions starting from an existing motor or a preliminary design.

  • This study has focused on the development of high performance membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) fabricated by decal method for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). To study the effect of ionomer contents on performance, we fabricated MEAs with several electrodes which were prepared by varying the quantity of ionomer from 20 wt.% to 45 wt.% in catalyst layer. The MEA performance was obtained through single cell test. The MEA prepared from electrode with 25wt.% of ionomer showed the best performance. We evaluated the surface area and pore volume of electrode with BET. We found that the surface area and pore volume in electrode decreased rapidly at the electrode with 40wt.% of ionomer in catalyst layer. MEA was fabricated by roll laminator machine and the roll laminating conditions for the preparation of MEA, such as laminating press, temperature and speed, were optimized. The MEA performance is not affected by laminating temperature and speed, but roll laminating press have a great effect on MEA performance.

  • In this study, we present a novel method for estimating the information of MU(motor unit) which is the basic element of human muscle by using surface EMG. Some of the method developed in this field could only estimate the numbers of MU that is activated. However, in our study the MU-simulator based on the line source model was designed to estimate the MU information including the numbers of MU and muscle fiber, conduction velocity, MU diameter, fiber diameter, and end plate position. The SMUAP(single motor unit action potential) detector was designed and CMAP(compound muscle action potential) by electrical stimulus was recorded. With these data, the MU-simulator can estimate the MU information by varying muscle paramater settings through MSE(mean square error) method. Our results shows that the proposed method can be comparable with the method of anatomical studies. Moreover, our system can be utilized to build a tool for diagnosis and treatment assessment of neuromuscular patients.
