Biosurfactants reduce surface and interfacial tension due to their amphiphilic properties and are an eco-friendly alternative for chemical surfactants. In this study, a new yeast strain JAF-11 that produces a biosurfactant was selected using drop collapse method, and the properties of the extracts were investigated. The nucleotide sequences of the strain were compared with closely related strains and identified based on the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Neodothiora populina CPC 39399T, the closest species with strain JAF-11, showed a sequence similarity of 97.75% for LSU and 94.27% for ITS, respectively. The result suggests that the strain JAF-11 represents a distinct species that cannot be assigned to any existing genus or species in the family Dothideaceae. Strain JAF-11 produced a biosurfactant reducing the surface tension of water from 72 mN/m to 34.5 mN/m on the sixth day of culture and the result of measuring the critical micelle concentration (CMC) by extracting the crude biosurfactant was found to be 24 mg/l. The molecular weight 502 of the purified biosurfactant was confirmed by measuring the fast atom bombardment mass spectrum. The chemical structure was analyzed by measuring 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR, and two-dimensional NMRs of the compound. The molecular formula was C26H46O9, and it was composed of one octanoyl group and two hexanoyl groups to myo-inositol moiety. The new biosurfactant is the first report of a compound produced by a new yeast strain, JAF-11.

In this study, the measurement of physical properties of 3 different ethylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of the zwitterionic surfactants were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of the synthesized zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that all three surfactants used during this study provide better softening effect at a pH of neutral condition than at an acidic or an alkaline condition. This result indicates that the synthesized surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.
A zwitterionic surfactant shows not only detergency but also softening effect since it shows characteristics of a nonionic or an anionic surfactant above an isoelectric point, while showing characteristics of a cationic surfactant below an isoelectric point. Therefore, a zwitterionic surfactant can serve as a dual function surfactant by a single molecule through the interconversion of cleaning and softening effects depending on pH of the aqueous solution. In this study, the dual function characteristics of an amine oxide zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by measuring the zeta potential and the isoelectric point using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). In addition, the physical properties of an amine oxide surfactant such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle and viscosity were measured and phase behavior study was also performed. The isoelectric point of an amine oxide surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was near 7.35 and that obtained by QCM experiment was about 7.4, where both results were found to be close to the value reported in the literature.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate, which was anionic surfactant, at a concentration higher than its critical micellar concentration was added to calcium solution for forming micelles. Then aggregates were formed by adsorption or binding of calcium ions on the surface of micelles, and gathering between them, and then rejected by two kinds of ceramic membranes to remove calcium ions. As result, rejection rates of calcium were higher than 99.98%. And in our experimental range the higher TMP trended to increase the resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), total permeate volume ($V_T$), dimensionless permeate flux ($J/J_o$) and permeate flux (J) because TMP was driving force. And we investigated effects of $N_2$-back-flushing time and filtration time, that was back-flushing period, during periodic $N_2$-back-flushing on ceramic membranes. As result, optimal BTs for NCMT-623l ($0.07{\mu}m$ pore size) and NCMT-7231 membrane ($0.10{\mu}m$) were 10 sec and 15 sec, respectively. Also, optimal FT was 5 min for both membranes, and the frequent $N_2$-back-flushing could decrease membrane fouling effectively. Then, the optimal conditions resulting from our experiments for synthetic calcium solution were applied to groundwater using as washing process of soymilk package. As result, rejection rates of calcium were higher than 99.98%.
In this study, the measurement of physical properties of ethylene oxide-propylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of a zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of DEP-OSA82-AO zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that DEP32-OSA82-AO and DEP34-OSA82-AO surfactants provide better softening effect at a pH of acidic or neutral condition than at an alkaline condition. This result indicates that both surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of acidic or neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.
The milk protein portion contains sialic acid which may be used as an index for k-casein. In comparison with non fat dry milk (NFDM) and calcium caseinate, the solubility of NFDM protein isolates at the various pH was inferior. Another consideration for the low solubility relates to the possibility that k-casein may have been extracted or possibly modified by the action of alcohol. The k-casein is the principal stabilizing fraction for casein micelle and any changes which result in its destruction or removal would be expected to have potent results. During solvent treatment, 16.5% of sialic acid was extracted in the first extraction solvent, whereas the second treatment caused only a 4.0% loss, based on sialic acid analysis. A study was conducted on the effect of concentration of methanol on loss of sialic acid. The loss of sialic acid decreased as the concentration of methanol increased to above 62% in both the first and second extracted solvent. It appears that loss of sialic acid is attributed to the water fraction rather than the methanol fraction. The effect of addition of the dried extracted solids on solubility was investigated. Protein solubility of NFDM protein isolates was sharply increased by 10% addition of the extracted solids and, thereafter, decreased. Efforts to restore solubility by feeding-back the extracted material supported the concept that removal of surface k-casein may have been a possible factor.
In this study, we analyzed the physical properties of an ethylene oxide adducted amphoteric surfactant such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and phase behavior. The dual function characteristics of an amphoteric surfactant were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were attained using zeta potential measurements and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) experiments. The isoelectric points of DE3-OSA82-AO, DE5-OSA82-AO and DE9-OSA82-AO surfactant systems determined by zeta potential measurements were 6.97, 6.93 and 7.10 respectively and they are in good agreement with the isoelectric point values measured by QCM experiments. The frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester showed that the DE-OSA82-AO surfactant could provide a good softening effect at neutral condition.
Sophorolipid is a biological surfactant of the glycolipid structure produced by Candida bombicola, which generally exists as a mixture of acidic and lactonic forms. In this study, we investigated physico-chemical properties, antibacterial activities, and cytotoxicity of the sophorolipid containing more than 96% of the lactonic form, produced by the gene regulation of production strains and application of a metabolic engineering technique. The lactonic sophorolipid showed a weak acidity in the range of pH 3.2~4.6 when diluted in water at the concentrations from 1 to 0.001 wt%. The $pK_a$ value of the lactonic sophorolipid was estimated to be around 4.3 from the acid-base titration curve. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the lactonic sophorolipid was $10^{-2}wt%$, at which the surface tension of aqueous solution was reduced to 36 mN/m. The lactonic sophorolipid showed the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of $1{\times}10^{-3}$ and $5{\times}10^{-3}g/mL$ against Propionibacterium acnes and Corynebacterium xerosis, respectively. The MTT (3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide] assay showed that cytotoxicity of the lactonic sophorolipid was ten times lower than that of triclosan.

In this study, ASCOⓇ SLES-430 surfactant was synthesized by adducting 3 moles of ethylene oxide and 1 mole of propylene oxide to lauryl alcohol followed by a sulfation process, and the structure of the synthesized ASCOⓇ SLES-430 was elucidated by performing FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR analyses. Interfacial properties such as critical micelle concentration, static surface tension, emulsification index, and contact angle were measured, and environmental compatibility indices such as oral toxicity and skin irritation were also estimated for ASCOⓇ SLES-430. Both results were compared with ASCOⓇ SLES-226 and ASCOⓇ SLES-328 SLES surfactants possessing 2 moles and 3 moles of ethylene oxide, respectively. In particular, both foaming ability and foam stability were evaluated for ASCOⓇ SLES-430 and compared with ASCOⓇ SLES-226 and ASCOⓇ SLES-328, which have been widely used in detergent products, in order to test the potential applicability of ASCOⓇ SLES-430 in detergent product formulation for a small capacity built-in washing machine.
Research trends in the measurement of foliar uptake of pesticides and the recently proposed action mechanism of the surfactant-induced uptake of pesticides were reviewed with the related reports and studies. Major techniques used in those fields are bioassay, radiotracer techniques with leaves or cuticular membrane. Recently, a new method using Congo Red as a tracer was proposed. The limiting factor in the pesticides uptake into leaves is the waxy layer which consists of the epicuticular and cuticular wax. Physico-chemical parameters such as molar volume, water solubility and partition coefficient of pesticides have limited influences on the pesticide uptake into leaves. Polydisperse ethoxylated fatty alcohol surfactants are well known as the good activator for many pesticides. It is now generally agreed that uptake activation is not related to the intrinsic surface active properties of surfactants such as surface activity, solvent property, humectancy and critical micelle concentration. Recent studies using ESR-spectroscopy revealed that the surfactants have an unspecific plasticising effect on the molecular structure of the wax and cuticular matrix, leading to increased mobilities of pesticides. Penetration of surfactants into waxy layer altered the pesticide mobility in wax and the partition coefficient of pesticide, and then the pesticides penetration into leaves was enhanced temporally. The enhancing effect of surfactant could be significantly different depending on the carbon number of aliphatic moiety and the number of ethoxy group in polyoxyethylene chain of surfactants. It is suggested that the rate of penetration of surfactants should have a significant relationship with the rate of penetration of pesticides.
