In Korea-LTPP(Long Tenn Pavement Performance) project, the full depth asphalt pavement test sections are constructed on the national highway to evaluate the structural capacity of asphalt pavement reinforced with glass fiber. Truck loading test and FWD test were performed to measure the structural capacity of test sections. Test results showed that the reinforcement of glass fiber installed at between surface and intermediate asphalt layer decreased the strain at the bottom of surface layer and moved up the stress neutral axis in asphalt layer. As a result, the tensile stress was developed at the bottom of intermediate asphalt layer of reinforced asphalt pavement, while the compressive stress was developed at the bottom of intermediate asphalt layer of unreinforced asphalt pavement. On the other hand, the tensile strain at the bottom of asphalt base layer didn't show a difference between glass fiber reinforced and unreinforced pavements. From the FWD test, it was shown that the surface deflection of asphalt pavement reinforced with glass fiber decreased 24 percents comparing to that of unreinforced asphalt pavement. This shows that the reinforcement with glass fiber appears to improve the rutting resistance of asphalt pavement.

PURPOSES : Compared to the criteria from advanced countries, Korea has conservative criteria for the buried depth of pipeline (about 30~70cm deeper) causing the waste of cost and time. Therefore, this research investigated the effect of various buried depths of pipeline on pavement performance in order to modify the criteria to be safe but economical. In addition, a recycled aggregate which is effective in economical and environmental aspect was evaluated to be used as a refilling material. METHODS : In this study, total 10 pilot sections which are composed with various combinations of pavement structure, buried depth of pipeline, and refilling material were constructed and the telecom cable was utilized as a buried pipeline. During construction, LFWD (Light Falling Weight Deflectometer) tests were conducted on each layer to measure the structural capacity of underlying layers. After the construction is completed, FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) tests and moving load tests were performed on top of the asphalt pavement surface. RESULTS : It was found from the LFWD and FWD test results that as the buried depth decrease, the deflections in subbase and surface layer were increased by 30% and 5~10%, respectively, but the deflection in base layer remained the same. In the moving load test, the longitudinal maximum strain was increased by 30% for 120mm of buried depth case and 5% for 100mm of buried depth case. Regarding the effect of refilling material, it was observed that the deflections in subbase and surface layer were 10% lager in recycled aggregate compared to the sand material. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the testing results, it was found that the change in buried depth and refiliing material would not significantly affect the pavement performance. However, it is noted that the final conclusion should be made based on an intensive structural analysis for the pavement under realistic conditions (i.e., repeated loading and environmental loading) along with the field test results.

In the summers of 1997 and 1998 and in February of 2000 we made 570 measurements of the ambient geomagnetic field 120 cm above the pavement surface of State Route 130, south of Pahoa, the island of Hawaii using a three-component fluxgate magnetometer. We measured at every 15.2 m (50 feet) interval covering a distance of 6, 310 m (20, 704 ft) where both historic and pre-historic highly magnetic basalt flows underlie. We also collected 197 core samples from eight road cuts, 489 specimens of which were subject to AF demagnetizations at 5 - 10 mT level up to a maximum field of 60 mT. We observed significant inclination anomalies ranging from a minimum of $31^{\circ}$ to a maximum $40^{\circ}$ where a uniform inclination value of $36.7^{\circ}$ (International Geomagnetic Reference Field, IGRF) was expected. Since the mean of the observed inclinations is approximately $35^{\circ}$ we assume that the study area is slightly affected by the magnetic terrain effect to a systematically shallower inclinations for being located in the regionally sloping surface of the southern side of the island (Baag, et al., 1995). We observed inclination anomalies showing wider (spacial) wavelength (160 - 600 m) and higher amplitudes in the historic lava flows area than in the northern pre-historic flows. Our observations imply that preexisting inclination anomalies such as those that we observed would have been interpreted as paleosecular variation (PSV). These inclination anomalies can best be attributed to concealed underground highly magnetic dikes, channel type lava flows, on-and-off hydrothermal activities through fissure-like openings, etc. Both the within- and between-site dispersions of natural remanent magnetization (NRM) are largest (up to ${\pm}7^{\circ}$) above the flows of 1955, while the area of pre-historic flows in the northern part of the study area exhibit the smallest dispersion. Nevertheless, mean inclinations of each historic flow of 1955 and 1790 are almost identical to that of the corresponding present field, whereas mean of NRM (after AF demagnetization) inclinations for each of the four pre-historic lava flow units is twelve to thirteen degrees lower than the present field inclination. We observed three cases of very large inclination variations from within a single flow, the best fitting curves of which are linear, second and third order polynomials each from within a single flow, whereas no present field variations are observed. This phenomena can be attributed to the notion that local magnetic anomalies on the surface of an active volcano are not permanent, but are transient. Therefore we believe that local magnetic anomalies of an active volcano may be constantly modified due to on going subsurface injections and circulations of hot material and also due to wide spacial and temporal distribution of highly magnetic basaltic flows that will constantly modify the topography which will in turn modify the local ambient geomagnetic field (Baag, et al., 1995). Our observations bring into question the general reliability of PSV data inferred from volcanic rocks, because on-going various geologic and geophysical activities associated with active volcano would continuously deflect and modify the ambient geomagnetic field.
A pile is a structural element that is used to transfer external loads from superstructures and has been widely utilized in construction fields all over the world. The method of installing a pile into the ground should be selected based on geotechnical conditions, location, site status, environmental factors, and construction costs, among others. It can be divided into two types: direct hammering and preboring. The direct hammering method installs a pile into the bearing layer, such as rock, using a few types of hammer, generating a considerable amount of pile driving-induced vibration. The vibration from pile driving influences adjacent structures and the ground; therefore, quantitatively investigating the effects of vibration is inevitably required. In this study, two-dimensional dynamic numerical modeling and analysis are performed using the finite difference method to investigate the influence on the adjacent slope, including temporary supporting system. Time-dependent loading induced by pile driving is estimated and used in the numerical analysis. Consequently, large surface displacement is estimated due to surface waves and less wave deflection, and refraction at the surface. The total displacement decreases with the increase of the distance from the source. However, lateral displacement at the top of the slope shows a larger value than vertical displacement, and the overall displacement tends to be concentrated near the face of the slope.

Recent development of 3D scanner and software is regarded as a promising method of acquiring replicas from human body indirectly. It would be very helpful if we could predict the characteristics of 2D pattern from the simple parameters related to 3D shape for ordinary user. Therefore, in this study, investigation of 2D pattern of waist/abdominal area from the 3D geometrical model was conducted for the pattern development of waist nipper. To create body models and develop the surface of them, one ortho commonly used CAD/CAM program, IDEAS(UGS-plm solutions, USA) was used. As for the size of the models, the width, thickness, and circumference ranges of adult women's torso reported in National Anthropometric Survey of Korea (1997) were used as a standard model. Seven size variations were made by changing the width of the waist only, from 19 cm to 40 cm. Therefore, simulated body models include not only the normal body but also obese body who has wider waist and abdomen width than hip width. As results, it was found that the curvature of the unfolded 2D pattern around the abdominal area decreases as the waist width increases. As the width of the waist increases more and more, so that the comparative ratios around the torso becomes in abnormal ranges, there appears inflection points and the direction of curvature was changed. 2D Patterns obtained in this research were quantified by curvature, length of the curve and angle of deflection in the reference frame box for the convenience of the actual pattern making process. It was also possible to find that the shape of patterns of abnormal body resulted in a quite interesting change in the curves of 2D pattern, which could be applied to the custom made waist nipper for obese women.

An experimental study was carried out to evaluate fresh properties of a moderately high-strength (high-flowing) self-compacting concrete (SCC) and to investigate shear behavior and performance of deep beams made with SCC. Fresh and hardened properties of normal concrete (NC) and SCC were evaluated. The workability and compacting ability were observed based on casting time and number of surface cavities, respectively. Four-point loading tests on four deep beams (two made with SCC and two with NC) were then conducted to investigate their shear behavior and performance. Shear behavior and performance of beams having two different web reinforcements in shear were systematically investigated in terms of crack pattern, failure mode, and load-deflection response. It was found from the tests that the SCC specimen having a normal shear reinforcement condition exhibited a slightly higher load carrying capacity than the corresponding NC specimen, while the SCC specimen having congested shear reinforcement condition showed a similar load carrying capacity to the corresponding NC specimen. In addition, a comparative study between the present experimental results and theoretical results in accordance with ACI 318 (Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete (ACI 318-89) and Commentary-ACI 318R-89, 1999), Hsu-Mau's explicit method (Hsu, Cem Concr Compos 20:419-435, 1998; Mau and Hsu, Struct J Am Concr Inst 86:516-523, 1989) and strut-and-tie model suggested by Uribe and Alcocer (2002) based on ACI 318 Appendix A (2008) was carried out to assess the applicability of the aforementioned methods to predict the shear strength of SCC specimens.
PURPOSES : This paper numerically evaluates the contribution of transverse steel to the structural behavior of continuously reinforced concrete pavements to understand the role of transverse steel. METHODS : Two-lane continuously reinforced concrete pavements with and without transverse steel were analyzed through finite element analysis with the aid of commercial finite element analysis program DIANA; the difference in their structural behavior such as deflection, joint opening, and stress distribution was then evaluated. Twenty-node brick elements and three-node beam elements were used to model concrete and steel, respectively. Sub-layers were modeled with horizontal and vertical tensionless spring elements. The interactions between steel and surrounding concrete were considered by connecting their nodes with three orthogonal spring elements. Both wheel loading and environmental loading in addition to self-weight were considered. RESULTS : The use of transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavements does not have significant effects on the structural behavior. The surface deflections change very little with the use of transverse steel. The joint opening decreases when transverse steel is used but the reduction is quite small. The transverse concrete stress, rather, increases when transverse steel is used due to the restraint exerted by the steel but the increase is quite small as well. CONCLUSIONS : The main role of transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavements is supporting longitudinal steel and/or controlling unexpected longitudinal cracks rather than enhancing the structural capacity.

The main purpose of retaining wall methods for deep excavation is to keep the construction site safe from the earth pressure acting on the backfill during the construction period. Currently used retaining wall methods include the common strut method, anchor method, slurry wall method, and raker method. However, these methods have drawbacks such as reduced workspace and intrusion into private property, and thus, efforts are being made to improve them. The most advanced retaining wall method is the prestressed wale system, so far, in which a load corresponding to the earth pressure is applied to the wale by using the tension of a prestressed (PS) strand wire. This system affords advantages such as providing sufficient workspace by lengthening the strut interval and minimizing intrusion into private properties adjacent to the site. However, this system cannot control the tension of the PS strand wire, and thus, it cannot actively cope with changes in the earth pressure due to excavation. This study conducts a preliminary numerical analysis of the field applicability of the controllable prestressed wale system (CPWS) which can adjust the tension of the PS strand wire. For the analysis, back analysis was conducted through two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses based on the field measurement data of the typical strut method, and then, the field applicability of CPWS was examined by comparing the lateral deflection of the wall and adjacent ground surface settlements under the same conditions. In addition, the displacement and settlement of the wall were predicted through numerical analysis while the prestress force of CPWS was varied, and the structural stability was analysed through load tests on model specimens.
Recently, GRS (Geosynthetic Retaining Segmental) wall has been widely used as a method to replace concrete retaining wall because of its excellent structural stability and economic efficiency. It has been variously applied for foundation, slope, road as well as retaining wall. The GRS wall system, however, has a weak point that is serious crack of wall due to stress concentration at curved part of it. In this study, therefore, behaviour of GRS wall according to shape of it, shich has convex and concave, are analysed and compared using Finite Element analysis as the fundamental study for design optimization. Results including lateral deflection, settlements of ground surface and wall obtained from 2D FE analysis are compared between straight and curved parts from 3D FE analysis.
A lot of landslides has occurred in rainy seasons beginning at June through September in Korea, where about 70 percent of the total area is mountaneous. Piles can be used as one of the most useful methods to stabilize such landslides. When a row of piles is installed in soil undergoing lateral movement such as landslides, the soil across the open space between the piles can be retained by the arching action of the soil. For the purpose to establish a reasonable design method for stabilizing piles, a method for stability analysis of the slope containing stabilizing piles is presented, using the theoretical equation of the lateral force acting on the piles in soil undergoing lateral movement. In particular, the theoretical equation is arranged by applying the coefcients of lateral force as a simple equation. And also the differential equations proposed in the previous studies for the pile-stability analysis are modified, assumming that the piles above the sliding surface shall be subjected to the lateral reaction from soil in proportion to the pile deflection. Finally, to investigate the effect of stabilizing piles against landslides, an existing landslide slope in Korea is adopted as an example.
